Participating in American Football with Accuracy - Entertainment

The game of football in the United States is a staple American sport. Of course there are other sports each of which has their passionate devotees. There is a definite air of excitement when football season is about to begin. All levels of football begin at the same time right after summer vacation at the pro level down to grade school. Football is a game that demands a lot of thinking, coordination, and physical endurance to play well and win. Whether you're watching college or high school football, Friday night the biggest day of the week for seeing football action.

There are many different levels to American football, depending on the players age and whether they're a professional. High school, college and professional are the three different levels of American football. The name of the organization that governs high school play is the National Federation of State High School Associations. Moving on to collegiate football, of course everyone has heard of the NCAA, or National Collegiate Athletic Association. In addition to the NCAA, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics also organizes college football. The National Football League, or NFL, is recognized by all who watch and love professional football. At the commencement of each play, there must be seven players positioned at the line of scrimmage for the offense. Besides that, the wide receivers, tight ends and running backs are not held according to number. What determines the outcome will be offered up by the play called. You will discover it depends on the total y ardage critical for a first down. The offense need to seize at least ten yards at the beginning of their first play, or down. Now, they fight for the next first down and are given four downs, or plays, to get there. You will usually see a pass play when they have lost turf and need to manage twenty yards for a first.

Every single football team has a special team. These special teams are used for plays where the ball needs to be kicked. A field goal attempt can be made, or the ball can be punted when the play allows the ball to be kicked. After a score has been made, or during a 3 point attempt, the field goal attempt is made. The 3rd play involves kicking off to the other team, after a score has been made, at the beginning of the game or during the third quarter after halftime. The place kicker, punter and the long snapper (who is responsible for snapping the ball to the punter) are part of the special team. We cannot forget the special team runners who return the ball after a punt of kick-off. If you are just learning how to play football, then the best approach is to patient with your self. When attempting to master this type of competition look forward to a long process to fully grasp the entire picture. Your commitment and desire to achieve a rewarding outcome will give you an adva ntage.

Get Faster for Football With Kettlebells - Sports - Football

I once wrote an article about how most agility training programs are terribleI got more than a few pieces of hate mail; and for that Im thankful. If we were all afraid to change the old-school thinking on football training, wed all be doing calisthenics and wouldnt lift weights because it makes you muscle-bound.

Well, heres another reason for some to hate me: most football speed training is beyond awful too. More on that in a future articlefor now, well talk about ways to increase football speed in the one place that matters most: the weight room!

Big, compound movements like Squats, Box Squats and Deadlifts should always be the base of your football training program. However, there are several smaller movements and special tools that can help you increase your quickness when performing speed training for football.

Enter the Dragon

Most people never heard of Kettlebells before Dragon Door and Pavel re-introduced them to the world.

Theyve been used by fighters and athletes for about a century, but they lost popularity somewhere along the line. This is a shame because they are excellent tools for becoming faster and stronger, especially for football.

Before anyone bitches out and complains that Im a member of a Kettlebell Kult (people who train only with Kettlebells), get over it. Kettlebells are to be used in addition to your normal football training, not in place of it!

Kettlebells are excellent for football speed because:

They can target the hamstrings and glutes in a way that a barbell cant

They compliment the big movements nicely by allowing you to train in athletic positions

They are excellent for dynamic speed work

Remember, football speed isnt just about running some damn 40-yd dash. Youve got to be explosive (hence the name Explosive Football Training).

Here are 2 excellent Kettlebell exercises that will increase your football speed:

1. Kettlebell Swings

This is the king of the football speed makers! Its a really common KB exercise yet I see people doing them wrong all the time. If all you did was add Kettlebell Swings to your football speed training, youd be miles ahead of most of your competitors.

This is NOT a squat movement. While you can do a squat/swing for general conditioning and fat loss, this is not what I am talking about for speed development.

You need to allow the bell to travel all the way back and then SNAP it forward. That snap is the key to the exerciseyou are building reactive strength, the same you would need for sprinting, jumping, and coming out of your stance into a sprint. This is explosive football training, not training for fat loss!

This can be done after your heavy leg exercise or at the end of your training as a hamstring/glute finisher. It is not necessary to do high reps in the swing as some believe.

Use a heavier KB and shoot for 3-4 sets of 4 6 reps.

Swings should be part of any Football Weight Training Workout, especially for those in high school.

2. Kettlebell Overhead Lunge

This is an excellent single-leg football exercise that will hit the glutes, hams and hips hard. It also has the added bonus of working the abs/obliques very hard since they have to stabilize the bell overhead.

Grab a kettlebell, press it overhead, then do a lunge. Get a nice, long stride and explode back up. These are excellent for your High School Football Workouts

When you lunge, dont be afraid to go deep. This is an excellent movement for football speed training because not only will it strengthen the muscles, but it will also dynamicall stretch the hip flexorstight hip flexors are often called breaks, because they literally will push the brake pedal on your speed!

The 2 Cause of Death in High School Athletes is Heat Exhaustion - Health - Supplements and Vitamins

As a certified personal Trainer and 2X Hawaii Ironman, I know and respect Mr. Hydration coupled with the FACT that The # 1 Injury in Athletes is cramping. Hydration or how to Hydrate is probably one of the top questions I get.

"Which drink should I drink?"

I just recently got back from working a Schumann's Football Combine in California where it was 118 degrees on the field and the kids were dropping like flies due to cramping. I also recently attended a Youth soccer camp. After watching those little Champions run around with no stop in their vocabulary. I decided people needed to know the facts about hydration. You see the little ones will go and go, they don't know stop, but even when we know better by the time we stop it is all ready to late. We have a saying in the world of Endurance sports like The Ironman "By the time you realize you need a drink or food its all ready to late."

So I decided to do a review on 2 of the more popular Hydration drinks. This is a comparison on a couple of popular hydration drinks so you can make an educated choice when deciding what you are going to Hydrate your Young Champions with or yourself with for that matter. What is the difference between Gatorade and Advocare Rehydrate? This is a question that needs to be answered with clinical and scientific facts. You can't just guess according to a bias point of view. We must be factual in answering this to let the readers and users know the scientific differences. I personally used to drink Gatorade and I thought that it was the best hydrating drink ever. But I began using Advocare Rehydrate and immediately felt a big difference, but as I said relying simply on how I feel is not enough and I wanted to know the facts and the truth between the two famous drinks. So here are the facts I found in The Comparison of Gatorade to Advocare Rehydrate.

Calorie content:

When it comes to calories, we often think that calories are bad for us but in truth our body needs calories for energy. Calories are bad when we are taking in too many calories and not burning enough of them off through activity. That's when calories can be bad and lead to weight gain.

Both AdvoCare Rehydrate and Gatorade have a calorie count of 50.

Carbohydrate content:

Carbohydrates supply the body with energy. A diet containing an optimal level of carbohydrates may help prevent body fat accumulation and its dietary fiber helps keep the bowel functioning correctly.

Rehydrate contains only 12 grams, while Gatorade has 14 grams.

Sugar:

Sugar contains saccharides. Saccharides have been shown to relieve chronic illnesses and diseases such as kidney disease, lupus, arthritis and several others. They also help to boost our immune system and shrink tumors/cancers.

Rehydrate contains only 12 grams, while Gatorade has 14 grams.

***Note Rehydrate uses a natural fruit sugar

Sodium:

The health benefits of sodium play an essential role in enzyme operation and muscle contraction. It is essential for osmoregulation and fluid maintenance of the human body. Other health benefits of sodium also include heart performance, nervous system and glucose absorption.

Rehydrate has only 100 grams while Gatorade contains 200 grams.

Potassium:

The health benefits of potassium include blood pressure, stroke, anxiety and stress, muscular strength, metabolism, heart and kidney disorders, water balance, electrolytic functions, nervous system.

Rehydrate has only 100 grams while Gatorade contains 200 grams.

***Note Rehydrate has a 1:1 ratio of Sodium to Potassium, the perfect synergy/combination that the body needs

Magnesium:

Magnesium also is vital for maintaining a healthy heart. Magnesium helps alleviate the rhythm of the heart and helps prevent abnormal blood clotting in the heart and also plays a key role in the strength and formation of bones and teeth.

Rehydrate contains 40 grams, while Gatorade has only 3 grams.

Calcium:

Calcium plays a major role in tooth and bone health. However, most people don't know that calcium is also important to blood clotting, hearth rhythm, nerve transmission, muscle function, and cell membrane function.

Rehydrate contains 40 grams, while Gatorade has only 3 grams.

The following are essential nutrients contained in AdvoCare Rehydrate but not included in the Gatorade formulation.

Advocare Rehydrate has Chromium (4.8 mcg). It helps in regulating the metabolism of our blood sugar and thus helps deter diabetes, include controlling fat and cholesterol levels in the blood. Therefore it helps to prevent hypertension or high blood pressure.

Advocare Rehydrate has Beta-carotene (1000 u) that helps prevent night blindness and other eye problems, enhance immunity, skin disorders, protects against toxins and cancer formations, colds, flu, and infections. Recent reports also show natural Beta-Carotene aids in cancer prevention.

Advocare Rehydrate has Ascorbic Acid (120 mg). Ascorbic acid may help in the prevention of early death from heart disease and cancer. In addition to its antioxidant benefits, ascorbic acid plays a primary role in collagen formation which is essential for the growth and repair of tissue cells, blood vessels, gums, bones, and teeth.

Advocare Rehydrate also has Vitamin B content:

* Thiamine Hydrochloride (B1) 150 mcg. It converts carbohydrates into energy.

* Riboflavin (B2) 170 mcg. It is necessary for growth, normal cell function, and energy production.

* Niacinamide (B3) 2mg. It has therapeutic benefits for joint pain.

* Pyridoxine (B6) 2 mg. with just under 2 mg a day of vitamin B6, your body is able to make more than 60 different enzymes that help your immune system in top condition, keep your red blood cells red, and help the rest of your body functioning well.

* Calcium Pantothenate (B5) 600 mcg. It is essential to the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, as well as for the synthesis of hormones and cholesterol.

Advocare Rehydrate also has L-glutamine (300 mcg) that support of cellular growth, energy, and repair. And L-arginine (133 mg) that enhance the function of the immune system, helping to detoxify the liver, and helping with fertility in men.

These many healthy vitamins and nutrients can only be found in Advocare Rehydrate and they are not present in Gatorade drinks.

With this factual analysis, you can be confident when drinking Advocare Rehydrate that you are hydrating your body correctly. It offers a whole and complete blue print of nutrients and minerals that are significantly needed by our active body. Well those are some of the FACTS I found out about the 2 Popular Hydration drinks. At the end of the day the Choice is yours. At least now you have the FACTS.

Finally, Rehydrate will lower your body core 2 degrees in under 30 minutes. Which could be life saving.

COST: Rehydrate is less than 1/2 the price of Gatorade

FYI: You would have to drink 18 x 8 ounce Gatorade's to equal 1 x 8 ounce Rehydrate

Oh Yeah, you might find this interesting more and more facilities with brand new turf fields are not allowing Gatorade on the field because it will stain the field. What was the name of that song "Things that make you go Hm mm."

Being a 2 X Hawaii Ironman Finisher I sure wish I had Advocare Rehydrate in my Arsenal. I wouldn't of had to be sticking Ice down my shirt to lower my body core. Hope This Helps.

Sorensons Ranch School football was established to help change the world one child at a time - Education - K-12 Education

Tevita Vakautakakala, Sorenson's Head football coach, believes in his team philosophy which is: Together Everyone Achieves More. He believes in a hard working team and believes that what these boys learn here will not only help them while they are here, but also when they go back home.Sorenson's Ranch Football was started in a quest to help achieve teamwork and self-reliance. Sorenson's looked towards not only academically helping the teens, but also using sports to teach the boys how to work with others. Sorenson's Ranch Director, Shane Sorenson, along with Tevita, believe that coaching these young boys to work together as a team and putting forth all their effort is going to teach them responsibility and teach them how to work with others. The Sorenson's Ranch Mustangs not only work hard together on the field but also off the field. They spend many hours doing service projects around the school and if ever anybody needs any help, they know they can call Tevita and his Mu stangs will be there to help. The Mustangs look forward to hay season. They are the first ones that are called to go on hay hauls and work hard as a team to see how much hay they can get off the fields. The Mustangs start their season by starting to lift weights in the morning. They get up at 6:00 am and lift weights for an hour. Then they get together after school and go running as a team. Then they go back after dinner and practice for a couple of hours. They end their practices with a group talk and start all over the next day. The Mustangs are fortunate to be able to travel throughout Utah and Nevada. They are encouraged to display the utmost respect for the other teams that they play against. As of now there have not been any problems with the other teams as far as fighting or disrespecting. Our boys are taught to hold their heads high win or loose when walking off the football field. After each game the boys and coaches get together to go over their game and give sugge stions for what they could have done differently and also go over what they improved on. Mustangs football teaches the boys to learn to trust. The program works well with the therapy that the boys are receiving from Sorenson's Ranch School. It teaches the boys that they are a part of something. The choices that they are making during football season not only affect them as a person but as a team. If one boy makes a wrong decision, it will affect the team and how they play. This helps the boys to learn to be responsible and trust worthy. Being a part of the Mustangs football team teaches responsibility and dedication. Once the boys are committed to the team, they are expected to stay committed to the team. It teaches them leadership and teamwork. Just as in life, every decision the boys make on or off the field will not only affect themselves, but also the people around them. Most of the boys that arrived at Sorenson's Ranch School are here because of the poor choices they ma de at home. They were not thinking about their families or others that loved and cared about them. Now that they are here, we are trying to teach them that the choices they make will in fact affect others around them. Having them be a part of the Mustangs football team helps teach them that important fact. Troubled teens that are at Sorenson's Ranch School are looking for hope. They are looking to fit in and be a part of something in a positive way. Most of them are tired of making wrong decisions, but do not know where to start to change. They do not want to focus on the negative things that happen in life. They want to look to the future and hope for positive things to come their way. Being a part of Sorenson's Ranch Mustangs football team gives them hope. It gives them the self-discipline they are looking for. It shows them that they can be a part of something positive and do not need the negative things that life has to offer. It gives them the ability to think clearly a nd focus on what they want for their future. It teaches them that dedication and hard work makes a successful team and a successful person off the field. It teaches them that "Together Everyone Achieves More." /directory/school/Sorenson's%20Ranch%20High%20School?org=71549

I use steroids and have been for several months - again. And yes, I have used them in the past. I have them on doctor's prescription, to help heal a very minor injury which caused a staff infection and two bouts of I/V antibiotics (21 total days at 2/day IVs) this year. The steroid I'm using is a hydrocortisone salve to help heal my skin from an abrasion and, hopefully, to help prevent another staff infection. But - I'm not using steroids to help build muscle mass, improve physical performance at sports, or even to maintain my youthful sexual prowess into my dotage! My use is bad enough, that kind of use is downright dangerous. How dangerous, you m ight ask? Well, see my article on the dangers of a simple little thing like artificial sweeteners, and the mounting evidence of not only carcinogenic damage but, worse, DNA damage to the genes. You know, the stuff you pass along to your children so they will grow up to be normal human beings rather than distorted freaks or sickly weaklings, or cripples, or..... But enough digression, back to Steroids, High School abuse and possible long-term consequences.Way back in the late 1970's I knew a woman who was so vain that she wanted to stay young, active and sexually attractive even though she was nearly 60. She was using steroids and she looked like she was sixtyish and using drugs, but she felt good, thought she looked great and her husband accepted it. She just wanted to "maximize the human experience" as long as possible and they both accepted the long-term consequences of her actions. We talked about it quite a lot at the time, and she had no illusions about rapid deteriorat ion after use and possible cancer or tumors because of using the steroids.First a brief look at Major League Sports - football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and track and field. The world has been using steroids and/or other performance enhancing drugs for about 40 years, to the point where Olympic Testing constantly turns up "champions" who have been using one or another of the performance enhancing drugs. Football stars, retired, have died in their 30's and early 40's of complications from performance enhancing drug use. A couple of young up and comers in pro baseball have recently died and several have tested positive for steroid use. So far there's no real evidence in that either Hockey players or Basketball players have been using steroids, but I'll wager that they have been and speculation on Television Sports Shows indicates that they have been.Is there a steroid problem in High Schools? The answer is an emphatic yes! Is there a steroid problem in Junior Highs and Gr ade Schools? The answer is still an emphatic yes! Though not quite as bad as in our High Schools. Are we, as a nation, doing something about it? The answer is "Slowly, but a growing movement" is gaining steam against High School Steroid Use. Here's a look at what's happening nationwide (no data available on Canada).According to a survey by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, steroid use among high school students more than doubled between 1991 and 2003. More than 6% of 15,000 students surveyed admitted trying steroid pills or injections. At the same time less than 4% of the nation's high schools were testing for steroids, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations' survey of athletic directors. Further, John Stewart, Commissioner of the Florida High School Athletic Association, asserts "there has to be a trickle-down effect" at the college and high school level, when citing the use of steroids at the professional level.Independent surve ys estimate 1.5% to 2% of Florida's high school athletes might be using steroids. "But against a student base of 215,000 athletes, it's kind of scary to think that possibly 4000 are at risk out there," Stewart says. "We don't want to see any youngster's life at risk." Stewart is also concerned by a study that showed not only football players and weightlifters, but females in the 9-to-11-year-old age group using them (steroids) to enhance their build. "That's scary because it means parents are buying them for kids. And its a scary thing that society is dictating to kids that young that it's OK to put your health at risk to have a body type that seems so critically important," Stewart says. Not only are steroids and other performance enhancing drugs being tested for, but there is a growing movement to test for all "recreational" drugs as well. With School Board approval, Polk County in Florida began testing for recreational drugs in 2004 and added steroid testing in January of this year, 2005. The major problem faced by School Districts, School Boards and Athletic Departments is funding. At this time recreational drug tests cost approximately $18.00 per student to administer. The random steroid tests run upwards of $100 per test.Other counties in Florida are following suit with both drug and steroid testing. Other states are also jumping on the bandwagon of testing. In May (2005) the Fort Zumwalt School District board in St. Charles County, MO, approved a voluntary testing program. Also last month the Texas House approved a bill directing the University Interscholastic League to develop a comprehensive education program for students, coaches and parents, and to survey high school students to gauge the level of anabolic steroid use. A 2002 study by Texas A&M University estimated up to 42,000 Texas students were abusing steroids. "Most parents would be shocked to learn - as I was - that teenagers use veterinary-grade anabolic steroids from Mexico - drugs made for horse, cattle and pigs," King (Rep. Phil, Texas) notes.Lawmakers in other states have considered bills that would mandate statewide testing programs for student athletes. Opponents argue that money and time could be spent far more efficiently. California has implemented new regulations requiring parents, players and school officials to sign contracts promising athletes will avoid steroid use. Just before the California Interscholastic Federation voted in favor of the new rules, Frank Marrero of Vacaville recalled how his 19-year-old son's addiction to steroids and paranoia led to his suicide by gunshot. In summary, we do seem to have an epidemic of drug and steroid use among both athletes and non-athletes (see ref. to 11-year-old girl above). We already have proof that continued abuse with steroids will cause the body to break down physically, will cause in particular certain types of tumors to develop, and will often eventually develop into a form of cancer. I 'm reminded of the long-term problems resulting from exposure to Agent Orange by Vietnam Vets. I'm also put in mind of the DNA and genetic changes documented above, in artificial sweeteners, and believe that time and testing will show possible genetic/DNA damage from steroids, as well. We are playing with our human genetic future using all sorts of "chemical substitutes and enhancements" - steroids, performance enhancing drugs, artificial sweeteners, genetically modified organisms (food grains, etc., hard to digest). College Sports Recruiting Opportunities Help Girls Through Bad Economy - Sports

When contemplating strategies for getting financial help with colleges in such a dire economy, getting recruited to play college sports should be at the top of any student-athlete's list. Given that premise, in the environment that men's college football recruiting has created, girls rule, and mens football recruiting may be the best thing that ever happened to womens college recruiting.

How does mens football recruiting fit into the equation? A disproportionately large number of mens scholarships go to football (up to 85 per school). To equalize sports opportunities across both genders, colleges support a broad range of womens sports via scholarships. In fact, female athletes who start planning very early in high school may even be able to pick up a sport they have never competed in before, and find great athletic scholarship opportunities through the college recruiting process. And for those who worry that athletics will take the focus off of academics, fear not, as female athletes have even higher college graduation rates than female college students who dont compet e (Division 1 -71% vs. 64%, and Division 2 -64% vs. 51%--compiled from NCAA sources).

By the time girls get to high school, most know if they're athletically inclined, and they have usually narrowed in on one or two sports of choice. But reality sometimes intervenes. A female student-athlete may have picked a sport that is highly competitive and she doesnt make the team. She may not like the coaching staff or they may not like her. She may have an injury that prevents her from pursuing her sport of choice. She may be interested in other things like student government or theatre, which conflict with the timing of the sport season. Or she may just get burned out or bored with her sport. What should a committed student-athlete do if she can't pursue her favorite sport?

There are all kinds of interesting sports opportunities available to girls who are willing to learn about them. Scholarships are offered for women in 24 sports in Division 1 and Division 2. If these sports are not offered at the high school level, there are probably club or recreational teams available somewhere nearby. It may be fairly easy to establish oneself as a player because many of these sports don't necessarily get the press that more high profile sports like women's basketball or volleyball get, so it may be more of a struggle for college programs to recruit players.

Here's what the landscape looks like. For girls, the sports that are offered at a large percentage of colleges and offer a fair number of scholarships per school are:

Basketball Volleyball Cross country/track and field Soccer Tennis Softball Golf Swimming/Diving

Here are some sports that arent available in as many schools, but have plenty of scholarships to give at the schools that have programs:

Field Hockey Gymnastics Lacrosse Rowing Equestrian Ice Hockey

And here's a fairly long list of sports that are offered in fewer schools and with less scholarships per school but they still have scholarships to give. Coaches in these programs may have a harder time filling these spots so they might offer great opportunities as well:

Bowling Fencing Skiing Synchronized swim Water Polo Archery Badminton Rugby Squash Team Handball

I am the mother of boys, not girls, but I know a good sale when I see one. Colleges are serving up a double whammy right nowvery difficult to get accepted, even more difficult to figure out how to pay for it. Participating in college athletics may make a student-athlete more attractive to an admissions committee, and may result in a scholarship that will cover a large part of the cost. If I was the mother of a female student-athlete and my daughter were even moderately inclined toward athletics, but hadn't settled on one sport yet, or was shut out from the sport she loved for some reason, I would encourage her to expand her athletic horizons a little.

So go ahead, girls -- pick up a hockey stick (field or ice, any kind will do), a bow and arrow, a fencing foil, a bowling ball, or another sporting implement you haven't experienced before. Do a little research to see what schools offer scholarship programs for women in these sports. If these schools match your general criteria for a good college fit, you should pursue them. A few years of training and the world is wide open to you, if youre a dedicated female athlete.

Press Release - Share Your Home, Change the World. Host a YFU Exchange Student - News - Press Releases

For further information contactMedia Relations: Reid Rago: or 800.424.3691 x 189

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seeking Host Families for Youth For Understanding Exchange Students: Share Your Home, Change the World.

What do teens like Luiza from Brazil, Hannes from Germany, Manami from Japan, Wasim from Pakistan, and Andrea from Mexico have in common? They are about to join a group of 2000 teens from more than 60 countries who are coming to America in August as Youth For Understanding (YFU) high school exchange students! Many of them are still waiting to learn what loving American host families will select them to be their new exchange sons or daughters.

These teens are hoping for experiences like enjoying a real American barbecue, attending a Halloween costume party and a high school football game, joining a school sport or music group, and sharing in the fun and responsibilities as real members of their American host families.

It takes many caring people to make an exchange student's dreams come true: it is the host families and the volunteers who make this adventure possible. They are essential links in the chain of friendship that goes back 55 years through 225,000 YFU students who have exchanged world-wide with Youth For Understanding.

Today Youth For Understanding is seeking host families for many bright, hopeful teens like these who will carry on that tradition and form lifelong connections with their host families and communities.

Host families provide a place to live and three meals a day plus the encouragement, advice and love to help their new family member through a year in a new home. The students bring their own spending money and health insurance plus the willingness to be a good family member, following family rules and helping out with family responsibilities. YFU provides local representatives who mentor the students and families to make sure it's a good experience for all involved.Host families offer a typical family living experience -- not a tourist/travel opportunity. They are caring people who offer a slice of real life in America. Families come in all shapes and sizes, ethnicities and ages, with and without children of all ages. They share an interest in teens and other cultures. Some families agree to host a student for the academic year while others agree to be a welcome family who will get the student off to a good start for up to 12 weeks.

Call the local YFU District Office at 1-866-493-8872 for more information to see if hosting might be right for you and your family. You can request profiles of students with interests similar to your own. More information is available on the Youth For Understanding web-site at where families and volunteers can fill out an on-line application.

Despite the differences people face around the world, kids are kids, and these YFU kids are hoping for acceptance, caring, friendship, and opportunities. They are also counting on wonderful people--like your family--who make those dreams come true.

Please consider helping a child begin their adventure of a lifetime with a positive start! Sometimes the best "gifts" are the least expected ones. YFU is looking for the right recipients for these gifts.

Rain, Rain, Don't go Away: Distributing Umbrellas as Promotional Gifts - Advertising

You'll never decry the rain again when you see umbrellas bearing your company's logo popping up like mushrooms around you. Umbrellas make a bold and classy statement, and will become mobile billboards for your business when the rain begins to fall. Umbrellas as promotional gifts have a distinct advantage over other types of business giveaways like pens and mugs. Giveaways such as these tend to make an impression only on the person who receives the giveaway. In contrast, a logo on an umbrella will be seen not only by the person who receives it, but also by everyone else the receiver comes into contact with. A person walking down the sidewalk carrying one may potentially be seen by hundreds of people.

The ticket to maximizing your advertising success through promotional umbrellas is finding the best locales and venues to distribute them. Putting promotional umbrellas into the hands of the right receivers means a little thoughtful planning. Try these suggestions for places to find both crowds and rain:

1) Elementary schools. Hundreds of parents walk their kids to and from school every week day. They can be found nine months of every year standing around in groups outside of classroom doors and school entrances. Parents and children alike will appreciate staying dry in a downpour, while you have the perfect venue for displaying your company's logo.

2) Sporting events. Peruse your local papers for the next Little League play-offs or high school football championship. Kids who play sports and the parents who watch them are bound to sit through rainy games from time to time. Next time the clouds make an appearance at the game, they'll be prepared for rain, and every spectator around them will catch a glimpse of your business's name.

3) Picnics. Tread boldly through popular picnic areas in your city. Look for large gatherings and offer your free promotional umbrellas to those who are picnicking. Better yet, pick a drizzly day to do it, and you'll see your promotional umbrellas put to use immediately.

4) Trade shows in rainy locales. Trade shows are always an excellent place to distribute promotional gifts of any type. Umbrellas will make an extra-special impression in places where rain makes regular appearances. For example, if you do business in the Pacific Northwest, your promotional umbrellas will be appreciated, and you can be certain they'll be opened frequently.

5) Golf courses. Die-hard golfers play rain or shine. Put one of your umbrellas in their hands, and they'll have one more reason not to skip the back nine when the clouds roll in.

6) Beaches. While you may not find much rain, you'll see a lot of sun. Beach umbrellas are as effective an advertising tool as their rain-shielding cousins. Bring a few cases to your local swimming hole and hand them out to people seeking reprieve from the scorching sun.

Remembering the following tips when choosing your promotional umbrellas will ensure that no one misses seeing your company's logo:

* Choose contrasting colors. Choose a light-colored umbrella if your logo is dark-colored, and vice-versa. If there isn't enough contrast between your logo and the background, it may not be very visible.

* Don't forget night-time advertising. Consider using reflective material for your business logo. Not only does this create an added safety feature for the user, it also ensures that your logo will be seen both during the daytime and at night.

* Place your logo in more than one place. It's advisable to have your logo emblazoned at least twice on each umbrella, one on each side. This way your logo will be visible to people on most sides.

Rain happens, like it or not. You may as well take advantage of it and consider its large potential for advertising your business.

Adam Sandler Movies on Satellite TV. - Entertainment - Movies

Adam Sandler is one of the most prolific comedians of the past decade in terms of movies that he has been in and produced. At any given moment, there are probably at least two or three of his movies play on network television or on a movie channel on satellite TV. Some of his most loved favorites are Billy Madison, Big Daddy and the Water Boy.In Billy Madison, Sandler plays a wealthy man's son who hasn't amounted to much and spends all his time with his delinquent friends getting drunk, being vulgar and getting destructive. One day the company gets put in jeopardy, and Billy has to either pass first through twelfth grade at the local elementary, middle and high school, or the company goes to the second man in command who is a greedy and not-nice guy. So, Billy starts over in first grade to try to get all of his diplomas so he can take over the company for his father. He has to spend two weeks in every grade, and then take a test at the end in order to pass. Billy is very j uvenile, so he fits in very well in elementary school. While he is there, he falls for his second grade teacher, Ms. Veronica Vaughn. It takes him a while to win the affection of Ms. Vaughn, but he eventually succeeds. And in the end, despite the second hand man in the company pulling out all the stops for him to fail, Billy passes all of his classes and gets to run the company. In Big Daddy, Sandler also plays a lazy guy that used to be a lawyer but who now loafs around on the couch watching hockey, drinking, and going out. One day his friend has a little boy dropped off at his apartment who was conceived in a one-night stand during a business trip. Sandler's character, Sonny, doesn't know how to raise a child, or how to deal with one in his home, so their interactions are great. Sonny decides to try to keep the boy even though it's his friend's child, because his friend doesn't have the time, is in a different relationship and doesn't know how to tell his finance, and Sonny has the time. So in a weird turn of events, Sonny starts to take car of this kid, who he lets re-name himself Frankenstein, and meets a new girl who he falls in love with, Leila. Child services tries to take Frankenstein back, but Sonny reverts back to his former lawyer self and defends himself in court to keep the boy. Thankfully he is smart and all of his friends who are also lawyers are co-councils and he wins his case. The Water Boy is about a water boy for a high school football team in Louisiana, and Sandler, as you can guess is the water boy. You will have to tune into your satellite TV to find out more about how this Sandler film plays out.

Fun and Different Wedding Invitation Ideas - Relationships - Weddings

There are so many unusual and fun ways to create wedding invitations. If you go on-line and scroll through the many printing company templates, they will give you ideas that you can expand on to make it your own.

There are also sites that are done by smaller companies who specialize in helping you come up with ideas that show your particular style. Think about how you want the reception to be and incorporate that into your wedding invitations.

Perhaps you can go back in time if your guests are people you and your groom went to high school with. That gives you an opportunity to have a reception based on the theme of your school prom. Or if you and your husband to be are big sports fans. You can have a reception based on a your high school football team or the guests can dress in sweatshirts of their favorite pro teams.

Some people would like to do their own design or put an image of a favorite sculpture on the wedding invitation itself. Thats easy. Simply do your design and take a digital image of it. Once you upload it, you can place it on the front flap of your design. That would make it very personal and would encourage the guests to keep it as a memento.

In addition to making the list for your wedding invitations, you could call some of those close to you to see if they have any fun and different ideas. Someone with an affinity to graphic design would be excellent to consult with. Maybe you know someone who has been always considered the most creative in your group who would be willing to help.

There have been several wedding invitations created that encouraged the women and men to dress like those in the movie Gone with the Wind. Costume receptions are a favorite of many people who have attended them. Have someone ready to take videos, and give copies to the guests who attended.Maybe you know someone who is very good in calligraphy. They are beautiful and very personalized, leaving the guest to admire the fact that you had your invitations done one by one, making them special. The calligrapher can add something to make it fun. Ask her for ideas.Even if you are having fun with it, dont forget that they are wedding invitations and certain information should be included. Dont forget to include the church where the wedding will take place, the date and the time of the wedding and the names of you and your future husband. You have to decide if you need RSVPs or if you want to restrict small children.

You could also wander through the card boutiques in town to see if there are any ideas you would like to interject into your own invitations. Whatever you do, you would have to put the invitations near the beginning of your list of things to do to give you sufficient time to complete your project.

Its easy to have creating your wedding invitations only one of the steps to your wedding day that can be fun, and can make it something special that you will always as remember.

Homeschooling on a budget - Education - Homeschooling

Is it possible to homeschool on a budget ? Of course, it is. One of the greatest things about homeschooling is the parent's ability to choose the curriculum for their children. This means that parent's will choose their child's curriculum based on several things. One of the first considerations is choosing a curriculum that will work with the child's learning style. After the consideration of learning style, another consideration for many families is whether the curriculum agrees with their world view. Many families find that they want the curriculum to be based on their religious beliefs, or even on their lack of religious beliefs. Whether one decides to make religion a part of homeschool curriculum, or whether the reasons for homeschooling are completely secular, deciding on the type of curriculum is a consideration that will be individual for each family. One thing to consider when homeschooling is the financial aspect of educating your child at home. Many families find t hat when one parent stays home to care for and educate children, there is a loss of income. This will sometimes mean that the family budget is already constrained, before any home education materials are secured. Some people ask if homeschooling is expensive. The answer to that is, it is as expensive as you can afford, or choose to pay for. Remember that you are already paying for the "free" public education that your child will not be receiving, because you cannot stop the taxation that pays for that function. Since your child is not taking advantage of that education, then you will be totally responsible for securing education materials outside of that source. An aside here is to find out if your local public school district allows participation of homeschooled children in the services they provide. Several states recently passed laws that would allow homeschooled children to go to public school on a part-time basis in such classes as music, foreign language, sciences and t heir associated labs. Sometimes this benefit also extends to things like sports. If your child is interested in playing high school football, then you might be able to take advantage of the local school's team, for the same cost as regular public school students. As you begin researching materials to educate your child, you will find that homeschool curricula range from free to very expensive. There are many free resources online that parents can choose to take advantage of. For pre-k, kindergarten, and lower elementary students, there is a wealth of information that can be downloaded, or printed from sources around the web. Finding these sources is as easy as typing the subject you wish to teach and the word free into a search engine and exploring the opportunities presented. As the student gets older it becomes a little more complicated to educate the student at home for free, or at a low cost, but by no means is it impossible. It will just require more work on the parent's part to research free sources. There are a number of sites that offer spelling and vocabulary games and exercises, at little or no cost to the parents. Math games and review exercises, as well as in depth instruction can also be found online for free. The biggest cost to the homeschooling family might just be the time and energy put into researching and finding free and low cost sites. Remember that it is possible to find copies, online, of the standards for each grade, along with the expectations of student's abilities when moving on to the next grade. Once you know what they need to know, then your hard work can make the difference between paying a lot, or finding great free resources to home educate your student.

THE REAL REASON TEENS ARE AT RISK WHILE DRIVING - Education

Once you become a parent their will always be this looming fear of putting your teen behind the wheel of a car. A big responsibility, sometimes taken for granted and treated with disregard. This article will discuss my opinions and my expertise as a licensed driving instructor and driving school owner.Earlier this year in New Jersey, a group of high school football players were killed in a car accident. This event has laid the groundwork for some changes in teen driver requirements. Being from New Jersey, this story has been widespread. I'm sure we are no different than someone reading this article in California. Everyone of us has heard horror stories about teen drivers getting killed behind the wheel. Is it the lack of experience? Distractions? Honestly, like everything else in life, your gonna have those who will just not follow the rules. The thought process as a new driver I must admit is a little bit different. They now have freedom. And that my friend is a great thi ng. Most of the time I feel as though it's peers who influence bad decisions. They will load up the car even though they know they can't have more that one additional person in the car. Of course I'm referring to 17 year olds. Friends can be persuasive.Just how trained are our teens? In my state, 16 year olds cab obtain a drivers permit with 6 hours of professional training at a driving school. If you live in New Jersey and ever have any questions about laws or the license process, please feel free to give us a call. You can find our number on our site. Grade A Driving Academy. From experience, most kids need more work than 6 hours. One problem that I see is lack of practice after we are done with them. I can't tell you how many times we have taken a 17 year old for the road test and they say their parents never let them drive. If they end up passing the road test, now we have a pretty inexperienced driver behind the wheel with no supervision. Parents help teach your kids. G o on YouTube and get sine ideas. Think about how you drive. Are you a good example? They are going to do what they see. It starts at home. I know it can be tough to teach our own kids. It's frustrating and they don't listen. I know. Miami Dolphins Call Ginn - Sports

D-day, to the football fan, isn't a day when receivers and quarterbacks storm the beaches of Normandy, fighting off the forces of the Axis. Instead, D-day means one thing: the draft. D-day is the one weekend a year where college athletes storm the turfs of the NFL, hoping to take no prisoners and procure a lavish contract on a decent team. The Miami Dolphins, an organization that has not finished with a great record for several years, is often sitting pretty on draft day: they usually have a high pick. The 2007 draft proved to be no exception: they had the 9th pick overall. With their first pick, the Dolphins chose Ted Ginn, Jr., a receiver and returner from Ohio State, welcoming him with open arms and open fins. This pick was immediately the subject of some controversy, with those in the sports industry questioning why Miami opted to go with a receiver over a much needed quarterback. The fact that Brady Quinn, a stellar quarterback from Notre Dame, was still available only fueled the controversial fire. Nonetheless, the Dolphins made their choice, putting their hopes in the hands of someone with, luckily, very good hands.Ted Ginn, Jr. was born on April 12, 1985; he grew up in Cleveland as a coach's son and won a national championship in the 110 meter hurdles. He also excelled in high school football. Despite winning the 2004 USA Today Defensive Player of the year, Ginn joined the Ohio Buckeyes as an offensive player. During his freshman year, he finished with 25 receptions for 359 yards and two touchdowns; 113 rushing yards and two touchdowns; and an average of 25.6 yard per punt return and four touchdowns. His punt return average was the best in the nation. Ginn became a Buckeye's starter during his sophomore year, where he finished the season with 51 receptions for 803 yards and four touchdowns and 43 returns for 782 yards. The next season his name was uttered in Heisman Trophy discussions, as he was a second team All-American, finishing wi th 59 catches for 781 yards and 706 yards and two touchdowns on returns. In the 2007 National Championship game, Ginn took the opening kickoff back 92 yards and scored a touchdown. He, however, got injured while celebrating and had to leave the game. Ginn's college career ended with him obtaining the Big 10 record of 900 yards on 64 punt returns and most punt returns for touchdowns at six. He also returned 38 kickoffs for 1012 yards, had 1943 yards receiving, and 213 yards rushing. He ended his time at Ohio State with 26 touchdowns scored. What Ginn's career for the Miami Dolphins holds is yet to be determined. With his speed - he is thought to be the fastest player in the draft - and his raw athleticism, Miami is hoping that anything is possible. They are hoping Ginn helps them go fishing for a title.

Embracing Eatonville - Photographic Exhibition - Entertainment

The current photographic exhibition at the University of Michigan Museum of Art Off/Site gallery, entitled Embracing Eatonville (January 20 - March18) features the photographs of Dawoud Bey, Lonnie Graham, Carrie Mae Weems, and Deborah Willis, each of whom attempts to represent (in varying ways) the historic town of Eatonville, Florida. Eatonville is the oldest black incorporated town in the United States, and hometown of renowned writer Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960).

I was immediately drawn to the pigmented ink-jet prints of Dawoud Bey, which present themselves in the form of portraits of high school students in their classrooms, accompanied by a few lines of the student's own verbal self-description. The photographs, though richly colored and saturated, remain stark in their documentary style shooting and presentation. The verbal statements help to further the subjects' expressive demeanors, although sometimes confusing the viewer by offering two conflicting positions. The self-description that the high school students attribute to themselves is not always reinforced through their actual expressions, which gives the work another layer of meaning that is less about a specific residential spirit and more about traits that are universally human. Even still, the subjects of these portraits serve to represent the future of Eatonville as its most potential-filled residents.

Although the subjects of these portraits are specific to the town of Eatonville, I felt that their youthful naivety could transcend geographic location and therefore, I could relate to the subjects without having knowledge of the importance of the town itself. This work alone could represent various towns or cities, but combined with the other three artists contributed to a unique spirit of the Eatonville that I was constructing for myself.

Lonnie Graham's photographs, also pigmented ink-jet prints, contrast Bey's photographs by embodying spontaneity, which for me is then transformed into a certain type of sentimentality. The photographs depict the people of Eatonville during a several day town festival. The photographer includes a range of age groups, depicting Eatonville's present a useful addition to the future that Bey represents. My "imaginary" Eatonville is coming together.

Carrie Mae Weems' silver gelatin prints are the only works to directly reference Hurston, offering historical re-enactments of some of the writer's days: jotting down some observations in her notebook, walking beneath willow trees, washing her feet in a basin, among other daily rituals. I was not immediately interested in Weems' photographs, perhaps because my unfamiliarity with Eatonville's historical roots causes me to reject the town as a historical real place in favor of something that I am able to construct on my own, something more imaginary, immediate, and contemporary.

Returning to the medium of pigmented inkjet prints, the photographs of Deborah Willis embody the timelessness of Eatonville, as well as representing social sites and gendered places that maintain historical importance by transforming it. Willis photographs socially charged locales: a high school football field, the view from a preacher's pulpit, and perhaps most notably in this series, the beauty salon. This specific location speaks of a site of female power, which has replaced other gendered spaces of Hurston's era, like the storefront porch which is a social site of male power.

The approach of this exhibit is not an uncommon one: an embodiment of the spirit of a place. The wonderful thing about this type of exhibit is that the viewer can extract the elements of his or her choice to construct his or her own imaginary place with its own personal significance. What's important is the photographic embodiment or encapsulation of the importance of place and home, both real and imagined.

Brian Westbrook 2002 Draft Day Picks

Brian Westbrook was born on September 2, 1979 in Fort Washington, Maryland. Although Westbrook is not the most skilled, biggest, or athletic player he has always used his drive and determination to make his way to the top of any level that he has ever competed at. For this reason, he is known as one of the most complete and versatile players in the entire football world. This is saying a lot when you take all of the great players into consideration.

Westbrook played high school football at DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland. Year in and year out DeMatha is a powerhouse in high school football and this held true during Westbrooks time at the school. Although he did not get a lot of attention from college recruiters, he did do enough to get a few looks from the next level.

After high school Westbrook took his game to Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although he had to fight through several injuries while in college, he still managed to become one of the best players that this level has ever seen. He still holds the NCAA record for all purpose yards with 9,512. On top of all those yards Westbrook also scored 84 touchdowns during his time at Villanova. He finished off his college career by winning the Walton Payton Award which is given annually to the best player in NCAA Division I-AA.

Although Westbrook had a great college career NFL teams were hesitant to pick him in the 2002 NFL Draft due to his small size (58), injuries, and small college experience. But the Philadelphia Eagles decided to take a chance in the third round, and this ended up being a very good decision. In 2004 he finally got a chance to start a few games, and he did a great job by rushing for more than 800 yards. He followed this up with back to back seasons of 1,000 total yards or more in 2005 and 2006.

Lizzie and Johnny Edwards were lovers. Swore to be true to each other, true as stars above.... - Other

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. To get you in the right mood for this honky-tonk tale of adolescent passion and its sordid conclusion, search for Elvis Presley's version of "Frankie and Johnny, or You'll Miss Me In the Days to Come." Written by the Leighton Bros. and Ren Shields (1912); it was the title song in the 1966 film starring Elvis. It exactly conveys the right mood for this article.

Cute, cute, so temptingly, dangerously cute.

This is the story of a cute Southern boy named Johnny Reid Edwards to whom the gods gave everything... except the self-control he needed to keep all his treasures together. You find such boys everywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. Dressed in polo shirts and shorts, they're quick with a quip and that dazzling smile, the smile whose power they soon understand and use with devastating effect. That smile is the royal road to everything... including the women who love them, not wisely (as they all come to discover), but too well.

This is the story of one such boy, Johnny Reid Edwards, the boy with enough wattage in that smile to take him to the top. Or so he reckoned. For now he stands indicted. The man who might have had the White House... now faces the possibility of the Big House.

Born June 10, 1953 in Seneca, South Carolina, a good place to get out of.

Johnny Reid Edwards' parents were Wallace Reid Edwards and Catharine Juanita "Bobbie" Edwards (nee Wade). The family moved frequently during Edwards' childhood, eventually settling in Robbins, North Carolina. There his father worked as a textile mill floor worker, eventually promoted to supervisor; his mother had a roadside antique finishing business, featuring the kind of dusty bric-a-brac without value where a smart passerby hopes to make a discovery for "Antiques Roadshow"... but never does. She later became a postal letter carrier. It at least paid regular.

Johnny Reid Edwards, a boy who looked up.

Johnny Edwards was a high school football star. That, and always remember that mega- watt smile, gave him what he wanted... what he always wanted... attention. And lots of it, as any American knows who has ever watched (and envied) the staged swagger of these adolescent lords of the gridiron as they enter their kingdoms each day. He learned what he had to do to move out... and move up.

Edwards was the first person in his family to attend college. He attended Clemson University and transferred to North Carolina State University. Edwards graduated with high honors earning a degree in textile technology in 1974 and later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law (UNC) with honors.

The girl of his dreams?

A man has dreams of the person he wants to marry, but only he knows whether the girl he marries is that dream. Did he get what he wanted... or did he just settle for less? His wife assumes she is his beloved... only to discover, sooner or later, she was merely a facsimile, and therein are the seeds of dissension.

While at UNC met Elizabeth Anania. They married in 1977; they were both cute as bugs in a rug... but Edwards was clearly cuter, and of course he was always festooned with the mega-watt Southern boy smile that just wouldn't quit.

The couple had 4 children (Wade in 1979, Cate in 1982, Emma Claire in 1998,and Jack in 2000.) Elizabeth matured into an ample matron during these years... John Edwards stayed as young and cute as ever, the very picture of Oscar Wilde's masterpiece "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1891) where the portrait ages, not the man. When a man comes to learn that he retains the secret of adolescence, of what mayhem and conquests may he not dream, and more than dream? For who would be sensible in the face of such a boon?

Malpractice millions.

After law school, Edwards clerked for a federal judge and in 1978 became an associate of the Nashville law firm of Dearborn & Ewing, doing primarily trial work, defending a Nashville bank and other corporate clients. The Edwards family returned to North Carolina in 1981, settling in the capital of Raleigh where he joined the firm of Tharrington, Smith & Hargrove.

He was about to break through to the big money, the really big money.

In 1984, Edwards was assigned to a medical malpractice lawsuit that had been perceived as unwinnable; the firm had only accepted it as a favor to an attorney and state senator who did not want to keep it. Nevertheless, Edwards, assisted by that all-powerful smile, won a $3.7 million verdict on behalf of his client, who had suffered permanent brain and nerve damage after a doctor prescribed an overdose of the anti- alcoholism drug Antabuse during alcohol aversion therapy. It was his first big victory... but only the first of huge, multi-million dollar victories and the huge sums he made. In due course, Edwards developed a winning formula that established him as the unstoppable rainmaker... the most important lawyer in any law firm, for they were the ones who had mastered the art of getting the serious money.

Edwards soon became a legend for this money. He had an eye for which cases would deliver the big bucks... and of course he knew, a combination of instinct and experience, how turn the woes of the little people into a cascade of cash, how to squeeze the big guys and rise high.

The tragedy of his life.

And so it might have gone, with the silver-tongued orator able to take the jury to just where he wanted them to go, showing them their power... and showing them how to wield it for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. But in 1996 his first-born child Wade was killed in a freak jeep accident. It was perhaps the only true tragedy of his life, for here the gods took what he so loved... and here, for once, words failed Edwards; the reality of too-soon death too real, too distressing.

A few weeks after Wade's death, the words were his to command again. Edwards in his 90 minute closing to the jury referenced his great personal tragedy. Mark Dayton, editor of "North Carolina Lawyers Weekly," called it the "most impressive legal performance I have ever seen." The jury awarded the family $25 million, the largest personal injury award in North Carolina history... And so, with great irony, his son's death helped Edwards rise high and higher still.... senator from North Carolina (1998); vice presidential nominee (2004) and, until his implosion in 2008, candidate for president.

Through it all, he still had that Southern boy cuteness; looking like the sunny side of 30 that he wasn't. Acting like it, too. Which is how ex-senator John Edwards, husband, father, respected statesman, found himself, June 3, 2011, in a North Carolina court charged with violating federal campaign finance laws, using contributions from wealthy benefactors to conceal his mistress and their baby while he was running for president in 2008. That boyish demeanor, handsome face, lithe body, and that smile had at last gotten him into deep trouble.

Elizabeth Edwards, the loyal wife who shielded him, divorced him, then died (2011). American voters who had believed in him now reviled. The big money had stopped. Only one thing remained: he looked absolutely terrific when he walked into the courtroom, the result of forgetting something: Lizzie and Johnny Edwards were lovers. Swore to be true to each other, true as stars above.... he was her man, and he did her wrong.
