Dan Marino - Historical Perspective - Sports

Dan Marino's record-breaking legacy begins as he completes 362 of 564 passes for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, setting NFL records for completions, yards and TD's in a season. In the playoffs, the Miami Dolphins whipped the Seattle Seahawks, then thy go on to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship, with Dan throwing for nearly 430 yards and four touchdown passes. They did lose in the Super Bowl to the San Francisco 49ers in a hard fought game for the Miami Dolphins. Dan is named to the Pro Bowl. Marino had a unique ability to read the defenses quickly before setting up to throw and his skill of quickly releasing the ball made it very difficult for defenders to sack him.

Dan Marino is well known as a professional football player and quarterback for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. He was not only considered a great QB for the Miami Dolphins, but he may go down as the greatest QB for the Miami Dolphins. He passed for an incredible 5,084 yards in 1984. He also passed for a whopping 48 TD passes. Both of these accomplishments were NFL records at the time. Dan Marino has over 400 TD passes and over 58,000 passing yards in his NFL career. Marino never won a Super Bowl. He announced his retirement in 2000.

Dan was an exceptional athlete as a young teen. In high school he played quarterback for his high school football team. He was selected to the High School All America team in 1978, which is sponsored by Parade. He was recruited to play football by numerous major universities. The Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball drafted him. At the end of the day he decided to attend college at the University of Pittsburgh, which allowed him to be close to the place he grew up.

For the Pittsburgh Panthers, Dan foreshadows his NFL achievements by setting NCAA season and career records for attempts and completions, yardage, and touchdowns. He earns All-American honors his junior year. After his senior season, Dan's jersey number is retired by the university in 1982.

Back in his home neighborhood, Dan's grade school football field is renamed Dan Marino Field and his high school honors him as well by retiring his jersey number.
