Lizzie and Johnny Edwards were lovers. Swore to be true to each other, true as stars above.... - Relationships - Love

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. To get you in the right mood for this honky-tonk tale of adolescent passion and its sordid conclusion, search for Elvis Presley's version of "Frankie and Johnny, or You'll Miss Me In the Days to Come." Written by the Leighton Bros. and Ren Shields (1912); it was the title song in the 1966 film starring Elvis. It exactly conveys the right mood for this article.

Cute, cute, so temptingly, dangerously cute.

This is the story of a cute Southern boy named Johnny Reid Edwards to whom the gods gave everything... except the self-control he needed to keep all his treasures together. You find such boys everywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. Dressed in polo shirts and shorts, they're quick with a quip and that dazzling smile, the smile whose power they soon understand and use with devastating effect. That smile is the royal road to everything... including the women who love them, not wisely (as they all come to discover), but too well.

This is the story of one such boy, Johnny Reid Edwards, the boy with enough wattage in that smile to take him to the top. Or so he reckoned. For now he stands indicted. The man who might have had the White House... now faces the possibility of the Big House.

Born June 10, 1953 in Seneca, South Carolina, a good place to get out of.

Johnny Reid Edwards' parents were Wallace Reid Edwards and Catharine Juanita "Bobbie" Edwards (nee Wade). The family moved frequently during Edwards' childhood, eventually settling in Robbins, North Carolina. There his father worked as a textile mill floor worker, eventually promoted to supervisor; his mother had a roadside antique finishing business, featuring the kind of dusty bric-a-brac without value where a smart passerby hopes to make a discovery for "Antiques Roadshow"... but never does. She later became a postal letter carrier. It at least paid regular.

Johnny Reid Edwards, a boy who looked up.

Johnny Edwards was a high school football star. That, and always remember that mega- watt smile, gave him what he wanted... what he always wanted... attention. And lots of it, as any American knows who has ever watched (and envied) the staged swagger of these adolescent lords of the gridiron as they enter their kingdoms each day. He learned what he had to do to move out... and move up.

Edwards was the first person in his family to attend college. He attended Clemson University and transferred to North Carolina State University. Edwards graduated with high honors earning a degree in textile technology in 1974 and later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law (UNC) with honors.

The girl of his dreams?

A man has dreams of the person he wants to marry, but only he knows whether the girl he marries is that dream. Did he get what he wanted... or did he just settle for less? His wife assumes she is his beloved... only to discover, sooner or later, she was merely a facsimile, and therein are the seeds of dissension.

While at UNC met Elizabeth Anania. They married in 1977; they were both cute as bugs in a rug... but Edwards was clearly cuter, and of course he was always festooned with the mega-watt Southern boy smile that just wouldn't quit.

The couple had 4 children (Wade in 1979, Cate in 1982, Emma Claire in 1998,and Jack in 2000.) Elizabeth matured into an ample matron during these years... John Edwards stayed as young and cute as ever, the very picture of Oscar Wilde's masterpiece "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1891) where the portrait ages, not the man. When a man comes to learn that he retains the secret of adolescence, of what mayhem and conquests may he not dream, and more than dream? For who would be sensible in the face of such a boon?

Malpractice millions.

After law school, Edwards clerked for a federal judge and in 1978 became an associate of the Nashville law firm of Dearborn & Ewing, doing primarily trial work, defending a Nashville bank and other corporate clients. The Edwards family returned to North Carolina in 1981, settling in the capital of Raleigh where he joined the firm of Tharrington, Smith & Hargrove.

He was about to break through to the big money, the really big money.

In 1984, Edwards was assigned to a medical malpractice lawsuit that had been perceived as unwinnable; the firm had only accepted it as a favor to an attorney and state senator who did not want to keep it. Nevertheless, Edwards, assisted by that all-powerful smile, won a $3.7 million verdict on behalf of his client, who had suffered permanent brain and nerve damage after a doctor prescribed an overdose of the anti- alcoholism drug Antabuse during alcohol aversion therapy. It was his first big victory... but only the first of huge, multi-million dollar victories and the huge sums he made. In due course, Edwards developed a winning formula that established him as the unstoppable rainmaker... the most important lawyer in any law firm, for they were the ones who had mastered the art of getting the serious money.

Edwards soon became a legend for this money. He had an eye for which cases would deliver the big bucks... and of course he knew, a combination of instinct and experience, how turn the woes of the little people into a cascade of cash, how to squeeze the big guys and rise high.

The tragedy of his life.

And so it might have gone, with the silver-tongued orator able to take the jury to just where he wanted them to go, showing them their power... and showing them how to wield it for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. But in 1996 his first-born child Wade was killed in a freak jeep accident. It was perhaps the only true tragedy of his life, for here the gods took what he so loved... and here, for once, words failed Edwards; the reality of too-soon death too real, too distressing.

A few weeks after Wade's death, the words were his to command again. Edwards in his 90 minute closing to the jury referenced his great personal tragedy. Mark Dayton, editor of "North Carolina Lawyers Weekly," called it the "most impressive legal performance I have ever seen." The jury awarded the family $25 million, the largest personal injury award in North Carolina history... And so, with great irony, his son's death helped Edwards rise high and higher still.... senator from North Carolina (1998); vice presidential nominee (2004) and, until his implosion in 2008, candidate for president.

Through it all, he still had that Southern boy cuteness; looking like the sunny side of 30 that he wasn't. Acting like it, too. Which is how ex-senator John Edwards, husband, father, respected statesman, found himself, June 3, 2011, in a North Carolina court charged with violating federal campaign finance laws, using contributions from wealthy benefactors to conceal his mistress and their baby while he was running for president in 2008. That boyish demeanor, handsome face, lithe body, and that smile had at last gotten him into deep trouble.

Elizabeth Edwards, the loyal wife who shielded him, divorced him, then died (2011). American voters who had believed in him now reviled. The big money had stopped. Only one thing remained: he looked absolutely terrific when he walked into the courtroom, the result of forgetting something: Lizzie and Johnny Edwards were lovers. Swore to be true to each other, true as stars above.... he was her man, and he did her wrong.

The Kenny Chesney News Letter Issue 9 - Entertainment - Music

In This Issue (1 Dec 06)

1. Kenny wins the Billboard Touring Award

2. Some R&R for Kenny

3. Kenny not on "60 Minutes" - Thank You

4. The High School Anthem

5. Reba and Kenny to sing again

6. The Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival

7. Kenny's upcoming Book?

8. Cuba and "You Save Me"

9. Do you Google?

10. A Computer Tip Before We Go

11. Your suggestions.

1.

The Annual 2006 Billboard Touring Award was presented recently to Kenny Chesney, who wins this award for the 2nd year in a row. The Road And The Radio Tour of 06 was a hands down winner and certainly no surprise to me. Congrats to Kenny and the band for a series of performances that will be remembered by the fans.

2.

You can look forward to not seeing much of Kenny over the next little while as he plans on taking a well deserved break. The past 3 years have been virtually non-stop for the guys, recording 3 new albums, touring and publicity shows, and, oh yeah, that marriage to Rene. All of that has left Kenny feeling a bit drained. As he told X-Radio recently, "So this year, I'm gonna get away for a while." Kenny basically wants to get re-charged for his live shows.

3.

Thanks to all who wrote to inform me that the 60 Minutes piece did not air as scheduled due to the death of Mr. Ed Bradley.

4.

Well two high school football teams from Connecticut (Windham and New Britain), will be battling it out Sat nite (2nd Dec 06) for the High School State Championship. The Windham coach Brian Crudden, has managed to rally his players to adopt Kenny's "Never Gonna Feel That Way Again" as the school Anthem for 2006. And their taking their rallying song all the way to the championship game in New Britain tomorrow nite. Will Kennys 2006 winning streak rub off on Windham? The team believes so.

5.

Kenny may be taking a bit of a breather, but he is scheduled to record another duet with Reba as she puts together a new a upcoming album of "Reba McEntire Superstars Duets" with not only Kenny, but Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Faith Hill, Don Henley, Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson and LeAnn Rimes will also join her. No date on when that will be available as yet.

6.

The Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival out in the Palm Springs California area last year drew 60,000 fans on each day of the two day event. Next year the organizers are adding a 3rd day to the event from Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29 at Empire Polo Field in Indio. And then on the 1st weekend in May they're doing it again, but this time with country music artists such as Willie Nelson, George Strait and Kenny Chesney. And there may be more acts added, so if yo ulive on the West coast, ya may wanna mark that weekend on the calendar.

7.

There has been talk that Kenny will be writing a book about his failed marriage to Rene Zellweger. How true this is cannot be confirmed, but I'll be watching this one as I'm sure many others will be also.

8.

And what started out as a great idea to shoot the video for "You Save Me" in Cuba, was not such a great idea afterall. Cubian authorities were not so keen to have the film crew do their shoot on Cuban soil and didn't actually give the aircrew permission to land the plane. So things were re-scheduled and "You Save Me" shot instead near Mexico City.

9.

Do You Google?

If you've been surfing and have had to face an on-slaught of pop-up windows, is where you need to go to download Googles Free Pop Up Blocker. It works with the FireFox Browser as well as Linux and XP, but after you download and install it, you'll need to View>Toobars>Google Toolbar to turn it on.

10.

A Computer Tip Before You Go

If you still use the CRT Monitors and not the flat screeen monitors, here is a power saving tip. Before you walk away from your computer, turn the power off the monitor. You can leave your tower on, but shut off the monitor. Not only is 85% of the computers power comsumption used up by the old CRT monitors, but they also give off extra heat.

11.

And as always, if you have any suggestions, I'm listening.

Til next time...

Steroids in Youth Sporting activities - Art

This used to be in which kids might join little little league groups excited in order to enjoy baseball, sports and dance shoes. Younger kids all over the country had desires of being the next Mickey Layer or Roger Staubauch. Nowadays, since children innocently become a member of clubs ready to start their own desire becoming a specialist within their picked sport, so that as mom and dad brighten in the stands wishing which their own child doesn't get hurt, the particular strain being bigger, quicker as well as stronger compared to the other person will get harder to disregard.

With professional sports activities deals paying out huge amount of money for each person each year, any child's goals can bring him or her fame and a quite big lot of money. Together with those odds, children, sometimes coaches, and sometimes even mother and father start to look with an advantage for their kid. Even though they may be unlawful to make use of a growing number of children tend to be looking at steroids to offer all of them the particular edge they are seeking.

Steroids are usually hormone drugs that produce athletes more robust and more muscle. That is a clear edge about the sports area. Kids recognize that their particular high school sporting activities years tend to be any time school recruiters are going to help to make provides to the best participants to be able to play on the college staff. Getting new by way of a key university implies that the gamer will get not just a free of charge journey scholarship grant for the university but may play on a fantastic group and then possibly obtain a career on an expert staff. This really is accurate for high school football, soccer, as well as dance shoes group participants too. Youngsters are now and again launched to be able to steroids who are only jr . high school and occasionally the stress being the most effective makes the steroids way too hard to be able to avoid. Journaling in Your Scrapbook - Hobbies

Many people like to add words to their scrapbooks. Words help to tell the story behind the picture. There are several ways to add words to your scrapbook pages.

One way to journal is through premade words and phrases. You can find stickers, diecuts and word cutouts, all with different phrases. You can also use alphabet sets to create words on your pages. One page I did has my daughter's four high school pictures, one from each year. Down the middle of the page I put the letters DPHS. In 50 years, when she looks at the page, she'll know those 4 pictures were her four high school pictures.

Other folks enjoy writing in their albums. If you are going to write on the pages, choose an ink color that matches the color theme of your page. You can write directly on the pages, or you can write on paper and then attach the paper right to your scrapbook page.

How much, or how little you journal is completely up to you. In some cases, I just wanted a year attached to my pages, so that my kids would have a general idea of how old they were at the time. In other cases I wanted a city name or building name to remind me of where I took the picture. In yet other instances I wanted to put people's names and a little bit about the people in the pictures.

I know some folks who included song lyrics or poems with their photos. They believe the song lyrics or poem truly tell the story of the photos on that particular page.

I have several photos of my own grandmother. On page one, I have just one photo of her, and then a lot of journaling, speaking of where she was born, what year she was born, where she grew up etc. On other pages, I put many photos of her, with very little journaling. It really depends on why you are making the album, who the album is for and what information you want to add with your photos that will determine how much journaling you'll do.

If your children are young, or your grandchildren are young, it's fun to ask them to write something each year and include that in the album so they can see their writing as they grow up.

Sometimes, if I have a lot to say, I'll type it on acid free paper and then cut out what I've typed and add it to the page. Typed words will allow me to say a lot more than if I write the words.

Often, we want to include a photo or article from a newspaper on our scrapbook pages. My suggestion is to copy the article onto acid free paper, as the newspaper will yellow and crack with time. One friend has a son who was on the high school football game during his 4 years in high school. He was often written up in the newspaper. She copied every picture and story written about him and he now shares those stories with his own son.

Another technique I use with journaling to cut shapes; ovals, hearts etc. and then journal on those pieces of paper and then attach to my scrapbook page.

If you are making a scrapbook for a friend, it can be fun to share your thoughts, versus just telling a story. For example, maybe you and a friend had a girl's night out and took some photos. You can share "I remember how much we laughed and laughed this night. My stomach hurt from us laughing so much". This shares not only photos but you are also sharing yourself with your friend.

Acid free index cards are great for journaling. They are just the right size to write on and then attach to your scrapbooking pages.

There is no right or wrong way to journal. The key is to have something in words to help tell the story of your photo.

Vince Young : 2006 Draft Day Picks - Sports

Vince Young was born on May 18, 1983 in Houston, Texas. He has always been known as a great athlete, and this stems back to his early playing career. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches and weighing nearly 230 pounds, it is easy to see why Young is one of the best quarterbacks in the world. When you combine this with a high level of athleticism and a rocket arm, Young is very hard to stop.

Young played his high school football at Madison High School in Houston for head coach Ray Seals. During his high school career Young started for three years, and during that time amassed 12,987 yards of total offense. With stats like this, it is easy to see why Young could have chosen to play at any college in the entire country. Young also competed in track and basketball while in high school.

After his senior season, Young signed with the University of Texas in 2002. He redshirted his first year which gave him the opportunity to learn the entire playbook. In his first season in college, Young played in 12 games and started seven of them. As a sophomore he emerged as a true dual threat quarterback, and led the Longhorns to an 11-1 record.

Young led the Longhorns to a National Championship during this junior season. During this year he passed for more than 3,000 yards, and ran for more than 1,000. This was good enough to take home second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

After his junior season Young declared himself eligible for the 2006 NFL Draft. He was selected with the third pick in the first round by the Tennessee Titans. During his first year in the NFL, Young passed for 2,199 yards and ran for 552 more. It is safe to say that he is going to be the Titans starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.

Is My Teenager Drinking - Family - Parenting

It's every parent's nightmare; their child comes home from a high school football game with alcohol on their breath. They probably fiddle with the dog or try quickly to make their way to their room where they think they can escape unscathed. As a parent, your first instinct is to rant and rave about the dangers of alcohol - not to mention driving. Then punishing them for eternity and remaining steamy mad for weeks to come. After all, they broke your trust in a way that could have substantial consequences. For other parents, their teen's drinking habits (or not) remain a secret for a while. The best advice is to assume that they are and keep looking out for signs.

Signs that your teen is drinking are of course, dwindling alcohol supplies of your own at home. If you notice that your liquor cabinet or a beer or two are disappearing, suspect the kids. If your teen is driving, then inspecting their car for beer caps or can - hidden under the seats or in the trunk may give you some clues. You can also find clues by making sure that you have access to their Facebook accounts and other social networking. Kids today have all sorts of code words for things like alcohol or sex that they use to try and fool parents. If you notice a pattern or start seeing posts about things your child and their friends have done - remain suspicious and by all means keep digging.

Other signs could be falling grades, skipping school or a drastic change in friends. If your child has had a best friend since grade school and suddenly hangs with a different crowd, you can be assured they are getting pressured in many ways. This isn't to say that a change in friends or that a certain crowd at school should be assumed bad - but there are reasons teens change friends. It could be that your child's old friends started drinking or partying and they didn't want to fool around with that. If so - good job mom and dad!

Many people believe that dabbling with alcohol or drugs for a teen is just the normal course of growing up. To an extent that may be true. Still, the deciding factor in whether or not your child continues to drink is your reaction. It isn't wise to confront them when they have been drinking. But you do have to deal with quickly and the consequences at home should be drastic enough to leave an impression. It might not be enough to just take things away. The bottom line is that drinking as a teen breaches your trust in them and they have to work very hard to rebuild it with you. Not to mention, it could lead to some dangerous activities for your child. Don't ground them for two weeks and then give in to the pouting and whining about them having to stay home all weekend. Stick to your guns and let them know that not only did they break your rules - they broke the law.

Another piece of advice is to not believe everything your teen tells you. It's amazing how many parents just automatically assume their teen is telling the truth. Don't be afraid to call other parents to make sure your kids are where they say they are - and that they are being supervised. Most parties for teens go on at homes where the parents are out for the night or go away for the weekend. Taking a drive by of your own may feel intrusive but can give you a bird's eye view of what they are really doing. If you suspect something is going on, following them around discreetly can give you a lot of information. After all, their safety is YOUR responsibility. Remember that even the smartest of teens - don't have a fully developed mind that allows them to see around the corners in life.

Teen drinking is fairly common. One survey among high school students indicated that 2.5 out of every 3 students admit to trying alcohol at least once. 2 out of every 3 teens admit to being drunk. Parents need to remain cognizant of behavioral and personality changes in their child and commit to seeing teen drinking as a serious offense with serious consequences.
