It's always amusing when you run across die hard allegiances to brands among sports fans. After an office contest I gave out miniature football helmets to our staff, and it started a fight over which are the best, Schutt mini helmets or Riddle mini helmets.
As soon as I started laughing, I knew I had entered myself into a passionate discussion I would not soon escape. A few of the diehard football fans in the office had just won miniature football helmets, and they were having a heated debate on which were the best helmets, the Schutt mini helmets or the Riddle mini helmets. The absurd nature of debating over the quality of a helmet no one could actually wear was hysterical to me, until I was dragged into the debate.
The guys decided that because I knew nothing about the two major football helmet manufacturers, I would be a good judge for their argument. I think they thought I was indifferent, but really I have never really cared. After learning all these facts about football helmets I now know a lot and care even less. Yet it was a lot of fun being the decider, so I did not resist their pleas for a verdict in the case of Schutt mini helmets vs. Riddle mini helmets.
First, I was swayed by the Riddle supporters. These helmet enthusiasts supported their favorite brand because of its rich tradition and its connection to the NFL. Apparently, Riddle helmets have been around almost as long as the sport, about 75 years. Riddle is official brand of the NFL, and is used by almost every NFL team. Riddle also developed the Revolution helmet that reduces the risk of concussions much more than traditional helmets. It sounded like Riddle was the superior product.
Then the small but dedicated Schutt supporters laid out their argument. Schutt was stared in the 80's and has been dedicated to improving the scientific technology in football helmets for years. They created a helmet that absorbs one and a half times as much force as a traditional one, and it has been proven with research. They also said that independent researchers have not found the same claims that Riddle found with the Revolution's ability to reduce concussions. Last, Schutt may not be as old of a company, but it has become the most used in football with college and high school football teams.
It did not take much deliberation for me to come to my conclusion, the Schutt helmets sounded like the superior helmets for real life, but the Riddle helmets edge Schutt out for the mini replica helmets. When I purchased my husband mini helmets for his birthday I loved the large selection of NFL hats and classic hats from Riddle. When my son plays football, I will demand that the team buys the safest Schutt helmets money can buy.
