Football in the United States must be distinguished from football around the world because Americans call the latter soccer! American football is the only game, where eleven players for each team must be on the field for every play. There are many players on the team, but the number used on each individual play is always eleven per side. Making a football team can be a difficult thing, especially if the number of people trying out is a large number.
Quite often, when trying out for a football team at the high school level, everyone makes the team. For someone who is good enough, the competition doesn't matter, but for some, it is determined by the number trying out. Every position is different, and it is good to know how to play them.
Let's try and understand the offensive line a little more by covering some of their principles. Following the rules of the sport, the offensive line has five player positions. The vital function of the players is to safeguard the backfield and take care of the quarterback. If the play involves running, then the offensive line must block the defense and create holes through which the runner can pass. Of the five positions, the very middle is the center who snaps the ball to the quarterback. Adjacent to the center are the two guard positions on either side. Then, on the outside are the tackles on either side of the two guards.
Of course each team has offensive and defensive players. The judgment of the quarterback and the coach may cause significant changes in the defensive line. Some trick plays require only four defensive linemen. If you are on the defense, you need to engage the offensive line and break through to get to the quarterback. The defense needs to keep an eye out for any handoff to a running back that may lead to an offensive touchdown. Also, it is their job to allow the linebackers to gain access to the offensive backfield to tackle the quarterback before he can pass the ball. Depending on the situation, the defensive line can blitz the offensive backfield with an all out rush to cause a loss of yardage.
The purpose of American football is to advance the ball down the field, and there are two main ways of doing it. One of the ways for moving the ball is called rushing, and it is simply running with the ball. Sometimes terms, or words can be used for different things, and rushing is used for running, and also as a pass rush. The other way that football teams move the ball down the field is the forward pass.
With that type of pass, the forward pass can only occur once in a down, or play, and that can only be done from behind the line of play, or scrimmage. There are other forms of "passes" which are the lateral pass, the hand-off or throwing the ball to the side or behind.
Seasonal preparations involve a lot of hard work and proper planning to get ready for the start of the season. Grade school and high school kids are now required to do a lot of training to prepare for the games they play. For many years, there have been some criticism of this aspect because some think it has become too extreme. Steroid use at the high school level is a commonplace event, especially where the competition is the most fierce.
