Man charged with killing UConn player

STORRS, Conn. - Police charged a 21-year-old man with murder Tuesday in the stabbing death of Connecticut player Jasper Howard early Sunday outside a school-sanctioned dance, where the suspect's lawyer says he was just trying to break up a fight.

John William Lomax III is scheduled to appear in court today on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit assault.

Police also arrested two other people in connection with the fight that led to Howard's death.

Hakim Muhammad, 20, was charged with conspiracy to commit assault and Jamal Todd, 21, faces a felony charge of falsely reporting an incident and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment for pulling a fire alarm that emptied the dance early.

None of those arrested is a UConn student.

Minnesota's Decker out for season

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota star wide receiver Eric Decker will miss the rest of the regular season because of a sprained left foot.

Decker, the school's all-time leading receiver, hurt his arch Saturday in a loss to Ohio State. He is one of 10 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award.

Iowa running back Robinson finished

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa starting running back Adam Robinson is likely out for at least the rest of the regular season with a high ankle sprain.

Robinson rolled his ankle late in Saturday's 15-13 win at Michigan State.

He rushed for 629 yards for the 7th-ranked Hawkeyes.

Fellow freshman Brandon Wegher, who has run for 321 yards, will start.

Gators expect to have four defenders back

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Top-ranked Florida could have four key defenders, including linebacker Brandon Spikes, back against Georgia.

Spikes and defensive tackles Lawrence Marsh and Jaye Howard practiced Tuesday for the first time in more than a week.

Marsh has played just two games this season because of a high ankle sprain, and Howard missed the last two games because of a knee injury. Spikes, the team's defensive captain, injured his groin Oct. 10 at LSU.

Oklahoma's Granger denied waiver

NORMAN, Okla. - The NCAA denied a request from Oklahoma defensive tackle Demarcus Granger for a medical hardship waiver and a fifth year of eligibility that would allow him to play another season.

Granger had surgery on his lower back in December. He started 11 games in 2007 before playing as a reserve last year.

East Carolina romps

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Quarterback Patrick Pinkney ran for two touchdowns to help East Carolina beat Memphis 38-19.

Dominique Lindsay ran for 139 yards for the Pirates (6-3, 4-1 Conference USA), who warmed up for a game against No. 14 Virginia Tech by rolling up nearly 500 yards on one of the country's worst defenses. Memphis is 2-6, 1-4.

Cincinnati gets Collaros ready

CINCINNATI - Fifth-ranked Cincinnati is getting quarterback Zach Collaros ready to play at Syracuse on Saturday while Tony Pike tries to adjust to a new cast on his non-throwing arm.

It's likely that Collaros, a sophomore backup, will make his second straight start for the Bearcats. Collaros threw for three touchdowns and had only two incompletions in a 41-10 victory over Louisville last Saturday.

Coach Brian Kelly said he hasn't totally ruled out Pike, who will try to practice this week.

Michigan cornerback Boubacar Cissoko has been kicked off the team. "He missed class, missed workouts," said Thomas Wilcher, his coach at Detroit Cass Tech. Cissoko, a sophomore, was suspended three weeks ago by coach Rich Rodriguez and missed two games. He worked his way back into the lineup and was reinstated late last week, playing a bit against Penn State.

Boston College quarterback Justin Tuggle, who started the first three games, and running back Josh Haden will transfer. Haden was the team's second-leading rusher with 242 yards.
