School Spirit Gone Wild - College Wind Spinners - Home - Gardening

I bet you have run into someone who has or maybe still is over zealous about their school spirit. I have been witness to bar fights, break ups and serious flare ups based on school pride. Living in Texas it is rather evident especially if you see someone walk around in anything that resembles Oklahoma. I see images of college students crying when their school team lost, go crazy and lose all sense of awareness when their school team wins and many more emotional expressions and outbursts based on their schools performances in sports, art etc. Personally, I have been and still am filled with school pride but not to the level some people take it to. In college I cheered for our school football team (which barely ever won) and got used to the same mundane result of losing. That's probably why school pride in me did not match up to that of my high school buddies who went to colleges with successful sports programs aka University of Texas at Austin. I was recently shopping onlin e and came across college and alumni wind spinners that were designed in respective college colors and themes. That is another thing that some alumni take too far - college memorabilia.

There is the occasional college flag or poster in the bedroom or the school mascot bobble head at a office work desk or even college wind spinners on the front yard - occasionally. But you know they have carried it too far when the car is plastered with "I love my school and it is better than yours" stickers and flags all over the front lawn. It is also quite interesting to note that people like this, have their whole life revolve around passion for their college. It is sometimes even a precursor to finding your soul mate - being from a rival school could possibly mean you are not "the one". Then there is the well known bar brawls that happens after ever rivalry game. I can understand when it happens in some college town where some macho college kid wants to show off and then spurns off this whole drunken drama that ends with half the people in the bar getting kicked out and not to forget a couple of broken and bloody noses.

School spirit and passion is definitely good. That's what successful athletic programs strive on - fans!! But over enthusiastic and overzealous fans are just plain annoying! Show your school spirit by buying memorabilia and being sensible enough not to shove it out of your personal space! A perfect example would be having college wind spinners in your front yard or bumper stickers or posters in your room. Well some might argue with that statement. In the wake of renewed school spirit in recent days, things that people did that were considered eccentric are very normal these days. I can't even begin to imagine what is considered or termed "eccentric" or "too much" these days with respect to rooting for the institution that you spent 4 to 5 years during your "molding" process!!
