Information on How Troy Moritz And His Essential Love Of Football Improved His Life - Sports - Football

Senior High School Football Coach Troy Moritz has had a challenging road to this point in his career. Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, Moritz was a demon on the field. When he was 12 years old he was really a principal force on his Pop Warner teams defensive line. In high school he led his teams defense to a school record number of shut out games and was recruited by major Division I college football programs. Nebraska, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Notre Dame came calling as did Texas, Oklahoma and UCLA. Moritz decided to remain in his hometown and become a Wisconsin Badger.

While at Wisconsin, Moritz set a school record for the number of sacks on the opposing teams quarterback. He was a beast on the field and a gentle giant in the classroom where he double majored in Psychology and Education. Moritz was the heart and soul of the Badger team, arranging projects for team members to visit sick children in the hospital and working together with the administration to get senior citizen alumni to football games. A man of superb character alongside stunning athletic ability, Moritz was known in his undergraduate days to be somewhat of a Renaissance man. His dominating presence on a Division I, Big Ten football team was viewed as an advantage heading into the NFL Draft. Pundits had Moritz being drafted in the third round and prognosticated about the defensive linemans future NFL career being long and prosperous. Everyone who knew (and knows) Troy Moritz said that all of this good fortune couldnt happen to a better guy. Moritzs prospects took a tumble when he was significantly injured in a car accident that prohibited him from playing football professionally.

That was all two full decades ago and today, Troy Moritz says that not making it in the NFL was the most beneficial thing to happen to him. During the course of the months following his auto accident, he endured a great many very difficult days of physical therapy that strengthened him in ways he never thought conceivable. Grateful that he was dilligent about his education Moritz began to look for a teaching job and discovered his college sweetheart was also teaching. In the back of his mind though, he thought he may always live with the sorrow of what could have been but was surprisingly surprised when he found he loved teaching - it energized him in a way football never had. Football is one thing I did because I was good at it, he is fond of saying. Teaching is something I do because I love it.

Moritz married his college sweetheart Cheryl and the couple has four teenage children. His sons play football, which makes their father proud. He has coached the high school football team at his school for a decade. When asked if he could ever see himself coaching at the collegiate level, a sparkle took over his eyes. Its not out of the question; I would love to do that.

The Correct Methods for Playing American Football - Sports

For 50 years or more, American football has been one of the dominant sports in the United States. Football in the US started at the collegiate level a few hundred years ago stemming from those that enjoyed rugby. No other game, other than baseball, more clearly defines America's attitude towards sports. Those that are fans of the game understand how traditional Super Bowl Sunday is. A very popular pastime that unifies families and provides astounding incomes for those that are professionals. The following were present a short summary of the game and how it works.

There are many different levels to American football, depending on the players age and whether they're a professional. There are basically three levels; high school, college and professional football. The name of the organization that governs high school play is the National Federation of State High School Associations. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA for short, oversees college football. College football is also organized by another organization called the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Those who watch and love professional football know all about the NFL (National Football League). At the beginning of each play there must be seven players in a line at the scrimmage line for the offense. Besides that, the wide receivers, tight ends and running backs are not held according to number. The certain play that has been suggested will have an exact effect. You will discover it depends on the total yardage critical for a first down. The o ffense need to seize at least ten yards at the beginning of their first play, or down. Wherein, they are afforded four more plays, or downs, to complete the next first down. You will usually see a pass play when they have lost turf and need to manage twenty yards for a first.

Every single football team has a special team. Basically, these special teams are meant for play that involves kicking the ball. The ball can be punted, or a field goal attempt can be made in the ball kicking plays. Field goal attempts are made straight after a score, or during a 3 point attempt. The third play is where you kick off to the opposite team when there has been a score, at the beginning of a game or in the third quarter after half time has finished. The special team members include the place kicker, punter and there is also the long snapper who is responsible for snapping the ball to the punter. We can't forget the runner for the special team who gets the ball back after a punt of kick-off.

Football is about many things, and proper planning and preparation each week during the season must be done. For a variety of reasons, the level of intensity at high school football games has increased over the years. For many years, there have been some criticism of this aspect because some think it has become too extreme. Though unimaginable a decade ago, steroid use is on the rise with high school athletes that are conditioned to train.

University of Tulsa Football - School Size - Education - College and University

The University of Tulsa is notable for academic and athletic accomplishments to say nothing of the fascinating nature in which the college began as the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls way back in 1882. To this day the university is still considered to be a higher learning institution affiliated from a historical basis with the Presbyterian Church. With a storied history that encapsulates student life, academic prowess, and historic significance many people find the most interesting fact about the University of Tulsa to be that Tulsa has the smallest undergraduate population of any school competing at the highest level of collegiate football.

Under the auspicious nickname the Golden Hurricanes the men of the Tulsa football squad compete against behemoth college football programs with resources and fan bases that dwarf the limited resources available at the much more modestly sized University of Tulsa. Despite an undergraduate enrollment of just 2,987 students (the size of some large high schools) U of Tulsa fields eighteen varsity sports teams including a men's football team that successfully battles with rival opponents in the highly competitive Conference USA.

Conference USA (often abbreviated simply as C-USA)is an athletic conference located in the Southeastern United States. In addition to the University of Tulsa the twelve member conference includes a West Division comprised of the University of Houston, Rice University, Southern Methodist University (SMU), University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), and Tulane University. The equally competitive East Division is made up of the following schools: University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), University of Central Florida (UCF), East Carolina University (ECU), Marshall University, University of Memphis, and the University of Southern Mississippi. When the University of Tulsa plays conference opponents like the University of Central Florida (UCF) with an enrollment of over 45,000 students (approximately fifteen times larger than the Tulsa) it is a wonder that the teams battle into the fourth quarter for victory.

The discrepancy in student body size is less of a factor in college football where teams are allowed to recruit than in high school football where teams are supposed to make do with the cream of their local crop of athletes. This comparison can be taken a step further with the example of professional football where everyone realizes that a game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants is not simply a contest of the best athletes in Green Bay, Wisconsin versus the best athletes that can be found in all of New York City (New York City has a metropolitan population that is about 190 times greater than that of Green Bay Wisconsin).

In most collegiate circumstances the size differential in universities has the biggest impact in terms of revenue generated that is then reinvested back into the athletic programs. Generally speaking, high student enrollment leads to more fans buying tickets and merchandise and more importantly a dramatically larger pool of alumni to reach to for donations and support.

Despite a student population that is dwarfed by competitors the University of Tulsa has by and large overcome these obstacles to achieve surprising success that is due in part to a rich football history that includes record bowl appearances dating as far back as the 1940's and the pride that comes with having placed three alumni to date in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a result of the school's size the University of Tulsa football team can serve as an inspiration to underdogs everywhere.

American Football Is More Fun To Watch When You Understand Each Position - Sports

One of the most popular sports in the United States has been football for just under a century. But the roots go back almost two hundred years when various forms of football, similar to rugby, were seen at colleges around the country. As the years passed, this sport became an American pastime like no other. Watching football at home with your family is often a traditional pastime from generation to generation. Hugely popular with all ages and both genders, those who play the game enjoy the various trappings of social status. We will now show you a few tips and strategies in regard to this game.

There are many different levels to American football, depending on the players age and whether they're a professional. Essentially there are three levels; college, high school and professional. The name given to the organization that governs high school football is the National Federation of State High School Associations. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA for short, oversees college football. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is another organization that oversees college football. The National Football League, or NFL, is recognized by all who watch and love professional football. To initiate each play, the rules say that seven players will be aligned at the scrimmage line for the defense. Excluding that, the total wide receivers, tight ends and running backs can differ in number. What determines the outcome will be offered up by the play called. You will notice that much will hinge on the number of yards needed for a first down. The offense must advance no less than ten yards with the onset of the first play. Wherein, they are afforded four more plays, or downs, to complete the next first down. The first down will possibly be afforded with a pass play if they've been moved back and need at least twenty yards.

Every football team has something called a special team.

Steroid use at the high school level is a commonplace event, especially where the competition is the most fierce.

Participating in American Football with Accuracy - Entertainment

The game of football in the United States is a staple American sport. Of course there are other sports each of which has their passionate devotees. There is a definite air of excitement when football season is about to begin. All levels of football begin at the same time right after summer vacation at the pro level down to grade school. Football is a game that demands a lot of thinking, coordination, and physical endurance to play well and win. Whether you're watching college or high school football, Friday night the biggest day of the week for seeing football action.

There are many different levels to American football, depending on the players age and whether they're a professional. High school, college and professional are the three different levels of American football. The name of the organization that governs high school play is the National Federation of State High School Associations. Moving on to collegiate football, of course everyone has heard of the NCAA, or National Collegiate Athletic Association. In addition to the NCAA, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics also organizes college football. The National Football League, or NFL, is recognized by all who watch and love professional football. At the commencement of each play, there must be seven players positioned at the line of scrimmage for the offense. Every single football team has a special team. These special teams are used for plays where the ball needs to be kicked. A field goal attempt can be made, or the ball can be punted when the play allows the ball to be kicked. After a score has been made, or during a 3 point attempt, the field goal attempt is made. The 3rd play involves kicking off to the other team, after a score has been made, at the beginning of the game or during the third quarter after halftime. The place kicker, punter and the long snapper (who is responsible for snapping the ball to the punter) are part of the special team. We cannot forget the special team runners who return the ball after a punt of kick-off. If you are just learning how to play football, then the best approach is to patient with your self. When attempting to master this type of competition look forward to a long process to fully grasp the entire picture. Your commitment and desire to achieve a rewarding outcome will give you an adva ntage.

Get Faster for Football With Kettlebells - Sports - Football

I once wrote an article about how most agility training programs are terribleI got more than a few pieces of hate mail; and for that Im thankful. If we were all afraid to change the old-school thinking on football training, wed all be doing calisthenics and wouldnt lift weights because it makes you muscle-bound.

Well, heres another reason for some to hate me: most football speed training is beyond awful too. More on that in a future articlefor now, well talk about ways to increase football speed in the one place that matters most: the weight room!

Big, compound movements like Squats, Box Squats and Deadlifts should always be the base of your football training program. However, there are several smaller movements and special tools that can help you increase your quickness when performing speed training for football.

Enter the Dragon

Most people never heard of Kettlebells before Dragon Door and Pavel re-introduced them to the world.

Theyve been used by fighters and athletes for about a century, but they lost popularity somewhere along the line. This is a shame because they are excellent tools for becoming faster and stronger, especially for football.

Before anyone bitches out and complains that Im a member of a Kettlebell Kult (people who train only with Kettlebells), get over it. Kettlebells are to be used in addition to your normal football training, not in place of it!

Kettlebells are excellent for football speed because:

They can target the hamstrings and glutes in a way that a barbell cant

They compliment the big movements nicely by allowing you to train in athletic positions

They are excellent for dynamic speed work

Remember, football speed isnt just about running some damn 40-yd dash. Youve got to be explosive (hence the name Explosive Football Training).

Here are 2 excellent Kettlebell exercises that will increase your football speed:

1. Kettlebell Swings

This is the king of the football speed makers! Its a really common KB exercise yet I see people doing them wrong all the time. If all you did was add Kettlebell Swings to your football speed training, youd be miles ahead of most of your competitors.

This is NOT a squat movement. While you can do a squat/swing for general conditioning and fat loss, this is not what I am talking about for speed development.

You need to allow the bell to travel all the way back and then SNAP it forward. That snap is the key to the exerciseyou are building reactive strength, the same you would need for sprinting, jumping, and coming out of your stance into a sprint. This is explosive football training, not training for fat loss!

This can be done after your heavy leg exercise or at the end of your training as a hamstring/glute finisher. It is not necessary to do high reps in the swing as some believe.

Use a heavier KB and shoot for 3-4 sets of 4 6 reps.

Swings should be part of any Football Weight Training Workout, especially for those in high school.

2. Kettlebell Overhead Lunge

This is an excellent single-leg football exercise that will hit the glutes, hams and hips hard. It also has the added bonus of working the abs/obliques very hard since they have to stabilize the bell overhead.

Grab a kettlebell, press it overhead, then do a lunge. Get a nice, long stride and explode back up. These are excellent for your High School Football Workouts

When you lunge, dont be afraid to go deep. This is an excellent movement for football speed training because not only will it strengthen the muscles, but it will also dynamicall stretch the hip flexorstight hip flexors are often called breaks, because they literally will push the brake pedal on your speed!

The 2 Cause of Death in High School Athletes is Heat Exhaustion - Health - Supplements and Vitamins

As a certified personal Trainer and 2X Hawaii Ironman, I know and respect Mr. Hydration coupled with the FACT that The # 1 Injury in Athletes is cramping. Hydration or how to Hydrate is probably one of the top questions I get.

"Which drink should I drink?"

I just recently got back from working a Schumann's Football Combine in California where it was 118 degrees on the field and the kids were dropping like flies due to cramping. I also recently attended a Youth soccer camp. After watching those little Champions run around with no stop in their vocabulary. I decided people needed to know the facts about hydration. You see the little ones will go and go, they don't know stop, but even when we know better by the time we stop it is all ready to late. We have a saying in the world of Endurance sports like The Ironman "By the time you realize you need a drink or food its all ready to late."

So I decided to do a review on 2 of the more popular Hydration drinks. This is a comparison on a couple of popular hydration drinks so you can make an educated choice when deciding what you are going to Hydrate your Young Champions with or yourself with for that matter. What is the difference between Gatorade and Advocare Rehydrate? This is a question that needs to be answered with clinical and scientific facts. You can't just guess according to a bias point of view. We must be factual in answering this to let the readers and users know the scientific differences. I personally used to drink Gatorade and I thought that it was the best hydrating drink ever. But I began using Advocare Rehydrate and immediately felt a big difference, but as I said relying simply on how I feel is not enough and I wanted to know the facts and the truth between the two famous drinks. So here are the facts I found in The Comparison of Gatorade to Advocare Rehydrate.

Calorie content:

When it comes to calories, we often think that calories are bad for us but in truth our body needs calories for energy. Calories are bad when we are taking in too many calories and not burning enough of them off through activity. That's when calories can be bad and lead to weight gain.

Both AdvoCare Rehydrate and Gatorade have a calorie count of 50.

Carbohydrate content:

Carbohydrates supply the body with energy. A diet containing an optimal level of carbohydrates may help prevent body fat accumulation and its dietary fiber helps keep the bowel functioning correctly.

Rehydrate contains only 12 grams, while Gatorade has 14 grams.

Sugar:

Sugar contains saccharides. Saccharides have been shown to relieve chronic illnesses and diseases such as kidney disease, lupus, arthritis and several others. They also help to boost our immune system and shrink tumors/cancers.

Rehydrate contains only 12 grams, while Gatorade has 14 grams.

***Note Rehydrate uses a natural fruit sugar

Sodium:

The health benefits of sodium play an essential role in enzyme operation and muscle contraction. It is essential for osmoregulation and fluid maintenance of the human body. Other health benefits of sodium also include heart performance, nervous system and glucose absorption.

Rehydrate has only 100 grams while Gatorade contains 200 grams.

Potassium:

The health benefits of potassium include blood pressure, stroke, anxiety and stress, muscular strength, metabolism, heart and kidney disorders, water balance, electrolytic functions, nervous system.

Rehydrate has only 100 grams while Gatorade contains 200 grams.

***Note Rehydrate has a 1:1 ratio of Sodium to Potassium, the perfect synergy/combination that the body needs

Magnesium:

Magnesium also is vital for maintaining a healthy heart. Magnesium helps alleviate the rhythm of the heart and helps prevent abnormal blood clotting in the heart and also plays a key role in the strength and formation of bones and teeth.

Rehydrate contains 40 grams, while Gatorade has only 3 grams.

Calcium:

Calcium plays a major role in tooth and bone health. However, most people don't know that calcium is also important to blood clotting, hearth rhythm, nerve transmission, muscle function, and cell membrane function.

Rehydrate contains 40 grams, while Gatorade has only 3 grams.

The following are essential nutrients contained in AdvoCare Rehydrate but not included in the Gatorade formulation.

Advocare Rehydrate has Chromium (4.8 mcg). It helps in regulating the metabolism of our blood sugar and thus helps deter diabetes, include controlling fat and cholesterol levels in the blood. Therefore it helps to prevent hypertension or high blood pressure.

Advocare Rehydrate has Beta-carotene (1000 u) that helps prevent night blindness and other eye problems, enhance immunity, skin disorders, protects against toxins and cancer formations, colds, flu, and infections. Recent reports also show natural Beta-Carotene aids in cancer prevention.

Advocare Rehydrate has Ascorbic Acid (120 mg). Ascorbic acid may help in the prevention of early death from heart disease and cancer. In addition to its antioxidant benefits, ascorbic acid plays a primary role in collagen formation which is essential for the growth and repair of tissue cells, blood vessels, gums, bones, and teeth.

Advocare Rehydrate also has Vitamin B content:

* Thiamine Hydrochloride (B1) 150 mcg. It converts carbohydrates into energy.

* Riboflavin (B2) 170 mcg. It is necessary for growth, normal cell function, and energy production.

* Niacinamide (B3) 2mg. It has therapeutic benefits for joint pain.

* Pyridoxine (B6) 2 mg. with just under 2 mg a day of vitamin B6, your body is able to make more than 60 different enzymes that help your immune system in top condition, keep your red blood cells red, and help the rest of your body functioning well.

* Calcium Pantothenate (B5) 600 mcg. It is essential to the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, as well as for the synthesis of hormones and cholesterol.

Advocare Rehydrate also has L-glutamine (300 mcg) that support of cellular growth, energy, and repair. And L-arginine (133 mg) that enhance the function of the immune system, helping to detoxify the liver, and helping with fertility in men.

These many healthy vitamins and nutrients can only be found in Advocare Rehydrate and they are not present in Gatorade drinks.

With this factual analysis, you can be confident when drinking Advocare Rehydrate that you are hydrating your body correctly. It offers a whole and complete blue print of nutrients and minerals that are significantly needed by our active body. Well those are some of the FACTS I found out about the 2 Popular Hydration drinks. At the end of the day the Choice is yours. At least now you have the FACTS.

Finally, Rehydrate will lower your body core 2 degrees in under 30 minutes. Which could be life saving.

COST: Rehydrate is less than 1/2 the price of Gatorade

FYI: You would have to drink 18 x 8 ounce Gatorade's to equal 1 x 8 ounce Rehydrate

Oh Yeah, you might find this interesting more and more facilities with brand new turf fields are not allowing Gatorade on the field because it will stain the field. What was the name of that song "Things that make you go Hm mm."

Being a 2 X Hawaii Ironman Finisher I sure wish I had Advocare Rehydrate in my Arsenal. I wouldn't of had to be sticking Ice down my shirt to lower my body core. Hope This Helps.

Sorensons Ranch School football was established to help change the world one child at a time - Education - K-12 Education

Tevita Vakautakakala, Sorenson's Head football coach, believes in his team philosophy which is: Together Everyone Achieves More. He believes in a hard working team and believes that what these boys learn here will not only help them while they are here, but also when they go back home.Sorenson's Ranch Football was started in a quest to help achieve teamwork and self-reliance. Sorenson's looked towards not only academically helping the teens, but also using sports to teach the boys how to work with others. Sorenson's Ranch Director, Shane Sorenson, along with Tevita, believe that coaching these young boys to work together as a team and putting forth all their effort is going to teach them responsibility and teach them how to work with others. The Sorenson's Ranch Mustangs not only work hard together on the field but also off the field. They spend many hours doing service projects around the school and if ever anybody needs any help, they know they can call Tevita and his Mu stangs will be there to help. The Mustangs look forward to hay season. They are the first ones that are called to go on hay hauls and work hard as a team to see how much hay they can get off the fields. The Mustangs start their season by starting to lift weights in the morning. They get up at 6:00 am and lift weights for an hour. Then they get together after school and go running as a team. Then they go back after dinner and practice for a couple of hours. They end their practices with a group talk and start all over the next day. The Mustangs are fortunate to be able to travel throughout Utah and Nevada. They are encouraged to display the utmost respect for the other teams that they play against. As of now there have not been any problems with the other teams as far as fighting or disrespecting. Our boys are taught to hold their heads high win or loose when walking off the football field. After each game the boys and coaches get together to go over their game and give sugge stions for what they could have done differently and also go over what they improved on. Mustangs football teaches the boys to learn to trust. The program works well with the therapy that the boys are receiving from Sorenson's Ranch School. It teaches the boys that they are a part of something. The choices that they are making during football season not only affect them as a person but as a team. If one boy makes a wrong decision, it will affect the team and how they play. This helps the boys to learn to be responsible and trust worthy. Being a part of the Mustangs football team teaches responsibility and dedication. Once the boys are committed to the team, they are expected to stay committed to the team. It teaches them leadership and teamwork. Just as in life, every decision the boys make on or off the field will not only affect themselves, but also the people around them. Most of the boys that arrived at Sorenson's Ranch School are here because of the poor choices they ma de at home. They were not thinking about their families or others that loved and cared about them. Now that they are here, we are trying to teach them that the choices they make will in fact affect others around them. Having them be a part of the Mustangs football team helps teach them that important fact. Troubled teens that are at Sorenson's Ranch School are looking for hope. They are looking to fit in and be a part of something in a positive way. Most of them are tired of making wrong decisions, but do not know where to start to change. They do not want to focus on the negative things that happen in life. They want to look to the future and hope for positive things to come their way. Being a part of Sorenson's Ranch Mustangs football team gives them hope. It gives them the self-discipline they are looking for. It shows them that they can be a part of something positive and do not need the negative things that life has to offer. It gives them the ability to think clearly a nd focus on what they want for their future. It teaches them that dedication and hard work makes a successful team and a successful person off the field. It teaches them that "Together Everyone Achieves More." /directory/school/Sorenson's%20Ranch%20High%20School?org=71549

The Fight Against Steroids In High School - Health

This article is Copyright 2005 by Windy Dawn Marketing and Loring Windblad. This article may be freely copied and used on other web sites only if it is copied complete with all links and text, including the Authors Resource Box, intact and unchanged in any detail including misspellings and typos.Okay, let's get real for a minute. I use steroids and have been for several months - again. And yes, I have used them in the past. I have them on doctor's prescription, to help heal a very minor injury which caused a staff infection and two bouts of I/V antibiotics (21 total days at 2/day IVs) this year. The steroid I'm using is a hydrocortisone salve to help heal my skin from an abrasion and, hopefully, to help prevent another staff infection. But - I'm not using steroids to help build muscle mass, improve physical performance at sports, or even to maintain my youthful sexual prowess into my dotage! My use is bad enough, that kind of use is downright dangerous. How dangerous, you m ight ask? Well, see my article on the dangers of a simple little thing like artificial sweeteners, and the mounting evidence of not only carcinogenic damage but, worse, DNA damage to the genes. You know, the stuff you pass along to your children so they will grow up to be normal human beings rather than distorted freaks or sickly weaklings, or cripples, or..... But enough digression, back to Steroids, High School abuse and possible long-term consequences.Way back in the late 1970's I knew a woman who was so vain that she wanted to stay young, active and sexually attractive even though she was nearly 60. She was using steroids and she looked like she was sixtyish and using drugs, but she felt good, thought she looked great and her husband accepted it. She just wanted to "maximize the human experience" as long as possible and they both accepted the long-term consequences of her actions. We talked about it quite a lot at the time, and she had no illusions about rapid deteriorat ion after use and possible cancer or tumors because of using the steroids.First a brief look at Major League Sports - football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and track and field. The world has been using steroids and/or other performance enhancing drugs for about 40 years, to the point where Olympic Testing constantly turns up "champions" who have been using one or another of the performance enhancing drugs. Football stars, retired, have died in their 30's and early 40's of complications from performance enhancing drug use. A couple of young up and comers in pro baseball have recently died and several have tested positive for steroid use. So far there's no real evidence in that either Hockey players or Basketball players have been using steroids, but I'll wager that they have been and speculation on Television Sports Shows indicates that they have been.Is there a steroid problem in High Schools? The answer is an emphatic yes! Is there a steroid problem in Junior Highs and Gr ade Schools? The answer is still an emphatic yes! Though not quite as bad as in our High Schools. Are we, as a nation, doing something about it? The answer is "Slowly, but a growing movement" is gaining steam against High School Steroid Use. Here's a look at what's happening nationwide (no data available on Canada).According to a survey by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, steroid use among high school students more than doubled between 1991 and 2003. More than 6% of 15,000 students surveyed admitted trying steroid pills or injections. At the same time less than 4% of the nation's high schools were testing for steroids, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations' survey of athletic directors. Further, John Stewart, Commissioner of the Florida High School Athletic Association, asserts "there has to be a trickle-down effect" at the college and high school level, when citing the use of steroids at the professional level.Independent surve ys estimate 1.5% to 2% of Florida's high school athletes might be using steroids. "But against a student base of 215,000 athletes, it's kind of scary to think that possibly 4000 are at risk out there," Stewart says. "We don't want to see any youngster's life at risk." Stewart is also concerned by a study that showed not only football players and weightlifters, but females in the 9-to-11-year-old age group using them (steroids) to enhance their build. "That's scary because it means parents are buying them for kids. And its a scary thing that society is dictating to kids that young that it's OK to put your health at risk to have a body type that seems so critically important," Stewart says. Not only are steroids and other performance enhancing drugs being tested for, but there is a growing movement to test for all "recreational" drugs as well. With School Board approval, Polk County in Florida began testing for recreational drugs in 2004 and added steroid testing in January of this year, 2005. The major problem faced by School Districts, School Boards and Athletic Departments is funding. At this time recreational drug tests cost approximately $18.00 per student to administer. The random steroid tests run upwards of $100 per test.Other counties in Florida are following suit with both drug and steroid testing. Other states are also jumping on the bandwagon of testing. In May (2005) the Fort Zumwalt School District board in St. Charles County, MO, approved a voluntary testing program. Also last month the Texas House approved a bill directing the University Interscholastic League to develop a comprehensive education program for students, coaches and parents, and to survey high school students to gauge the level of anabolic steroid use. A 2002 study by Texas A&M University estimated up to 42,000 Texas students were abusing steroids. "Most parents would be shocked to learn - as I was - that teenagers use veterinary-grade anabolic steroids from Mexico - drugs made for horse, cattle and pigs," King (Rep. Phil, Texas) notes.Lawmakers in other states have considered bills that would mandate statewide testing programs for student athletes. Opponents argue that money and time could be spent far more efficiently. California has implemented new regulations requiring parents, players and school officials to sign contracts promising athletes will avoid steroid use. Just before the California Interscholastic Federation voted in favor of the new rules, Frank Marrero of Vacaville recalled how his 19-year-old son's addiction to steroids and paranoia led to his suicide by gunshot. In summary, we do seem to have an epidemic of drug and steroid use among both athletes and non-athletes (see ref. to 11-year-old girl above). We already have proof that continued abuse with steroids will cause the body to break down physically, will cause in particular certain types of tumors to develop, and will often eventually develop into a form of cancer. I 'm reminded of the long-term problems resulting from exposure to Agent Orange by Vietnam Vets. I'm also put in mind of the DNA and genetic changes documented above, in artificial sweeteners, and believe that time and testing will show possible genetic/DNA damage from steroids, as well. We are playing with our human genetic future using all sorts of "chemical substitutes and enhancements" - steroids, performance enhancing drugs, artificial sweeteners, genetically modified organisms (food grains, etc., hard to digest). Preparing the High School Body for Collegiate Baseball - Sports

Preparing the High School Body for Collegiate Baseball by Coach Dan Huff, CSCS

If you are like most high school baseball players you are much more than just a baseball player. You are also involved in basketball, football, soccer, and maybe even track and field. This means that you are also required to train for baseball as well as basketball, football, soccer, and maybe even track and field. This leaves very little room for sport specific training.

The chances are that you are in pre-season training all year long. As soon as baseball season ends you begin pre-season training for football. As soon as football season ends you begin pre-season training for basketball, and so on...

Now don't get me wrong, there is definitely a place (and a very important one) for pre-season training, but the pre-season is just the icing on the cake. And what kind of cake would you have if it was only icing?

When you get to college you can expect a drastic change in your training styles because along with your pre-season training you will also have off-season, post-season, and in-season training. In other words, you will be training for baseball 52 weeks out of the year.

Keep this in mind during your junior and senior years of high school as you are getting ready to move onto the next level of competition. If you can begin training like a collegiate baseball player before you get to college you will have a step up on your fellow incoming freshmen.

The first thing that you will need to realize is that next season starts the day after this season ends. Sure, we will not be training all out the day after the season ends, but we will have opening day in our sights. Your training calendar needs to begin with post season training, a 4 to 6 week period where you allow your body to recover from the physical demands of the season. This is where you will be visiting your athletic training room for rehab treatments and doing a lot of low intensity work to give your body a chance to take it easy without taking it off.

After these 4-6 weeks you will begin to pump up the intensity and move into your off-season training. During the off-season you will be building your foundation for the next season. If you are lacking in strength, that will be your focus. If you are lacking in power, that will be your focus. If you are lacking in speed, that will be your focus. The key word in those statements is focus. That does not mean that we are not at all interested in the other components, we are simply focusing on your weakness.

After 8-12 weeks of off-season training you will move into your pre-season training. This is the 12 weeks leading up to your opening day. During this phase of training you will we working on the key components of the game, arm strength, acceleration, change of direction, rotational power, ect... These components will be built on the foundation that you developed during the off-season. Your in-season training will usually be 2 days of training each week consisting of preventative exercises so that you can maintain the healthiest body possible during the season.

The sooner you can prepare your body for this type of year long training for one specific sport the better off you will be during your college career.

High School Sports Responsible for Catastrophic Brain Injuries - Health

For much of our youth, high school sports are a big part of growing up. Did you know that 20% of high school athletes sustain traumatic brain injuries every season? That includes 60,000 concussions, over 60% of which are caused by football injuries alone.

The hidden danger of concussionsA concussion can lead to second impact syndrome. Second impact syndrome occurs when someone who has already suffered a brain injury, even a very mild one, incurs a second brain injury before the first one has completely healed. It can set off a chain of events inside the brain that can cause long term damage or rapid death.

Concussions often go unnoticed or ignored. You can get a concussion without passing out.

Adolescents are significantly more likely than adults to experience second impact syndrome when they incur a second injury.

PreventionRecognizing brain injury is the key to preventing long term damage and death. Players who are injured need immediate attention, and more importantly, they absolutely must not return to play until their injuries are completely healed.

The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) recommends that coaches look for the following warning signs:

Symptoms observed by coach: Appears dazed or stunned Is confused about assignment Forgets plays Is unsure of game, score, or opponent Moves clumsily Answers questions slowly Loses consciousness Shows behavior or personality changes Can't recall events prior to hit Can't recall events after hit

Symptoms reported by player: Headache Nausea Balance problems or dizziness Double or fuzzy vision Sensitivity to light or noise Feeling sluggish Feeling foggy or groggy Concentration or memory problems Confusion

Teenagers and brain injuriesTeenagers' brains are in a state of rapid development. Injury during adolescence can actually do more harm than a brain injury in a child or an adult.

Identity is developed during these years and injury to the brain while identity is developing can cause low self esteem and a radically altered sense of self.

Brain injury during adolescence can interfere with sexual development and cause permanent sexual dysfunction.

Brain injuries during high school are more likely to out an end to education than injuries earlier in childhood. Brain injuries cause cognitive, concentration, and memory problems. Often school performance drops before the student is even aware of the injury.

Teenagers with brain injuries may also develop emotional and behavioral problems including: Anger Depression Suicide Violent behavior Sleep disorders Substance abuse Legal problems

High School Reunions: How to Handle Them - Other

There is no way around it: whether you're going to your fifty year, bragging about grandkids and showing off new teeth, or going to your ten year, bragging about degrees received and showing off new cars, high school reunions can be uncomfortable. Part of this lies in the fact that people change, losing touch with those they once copied off of in second period math. But, mostly it's because no matter how old people become, they always seem to somewhat care what their high school peers think of them. You can take the person out of high school but you can't take the high school out of them. Still, it's not impossible to make reunions comfortable. With a little planning, and a little restraint, you may find yourself being as cool as you always thought you were.Don't Have Pre-conceived NotionsWe all wonder what happened to the quarterback of the football team, the head cheerleader, the senior class president, and the class oddball who only wore black and skipped around with ba gpipes. While we have assumptions of what became of whom, don't be so immersed in who you think people have become that you are unwillingly to see who they really are. People often turn out different than even they think they will and the version of them now can be 180 degrees from what they once were. Think about it this way: are you the same person you were in high school? Probably not. Don't Say you Invented Post-itsExaggeration and reunions seem to go with each other, as if they arrived together in an old beat up Honda but called it a Hummer. Still, exaggeration is risky and tainted with desperation. Few things are more uncomfortable than exaggerating, and getting caught by those you're trying to impress. If you feel a need to enhance a little, keep it to a minimum; don't say you are married to someone who looks like Mel Gibson, when you really are married to someone who looks like Mel Brooks. Don't Bring up old BeefMost people had a high school nemesis, that one person with whom they just never got along. While it may have been fine to shun this person in high school, a time when shunning was not only acceptable but highly conducive to social standing, reunions are meant to be peaceful, and full of maturity. A reunion is a time to leave water under the bridge, not a time to open up a flood gate. Don't Only Talk to Those You KnowMost of us have a small group of high school friends who we still keep in touch with, even years later. While we'll see them at the reunion, we'll also see them at poker on Saturday night and at softball on Tuesday afternoon. Instead of spending all your time catching up with those you've already caught, reach out to those you haven't seen in years. Even if you weren't friends with them in high school, you might find, as adults, you have more in common.

Boost Team Spirit! Great Ideas For High School Sports Booster Clubs - Sports

July had become our new vacation month. After years of dodging the "dog days" of August up in Lake George, NY our family had to adapt to a new schedule. Starting in 1995, August revolved around High School fall sports and their pre-season practices. So over the years as our four participated in soccer, field hockey and football during the month of August, I became involved with the various team booster clubs. While the kids ran, lifted, sweated and practiced, I was busy with the Boosters getting activities planned for the season. High school sports booster clubs, if run with spirit and enthusiasm, are a great means of boosting team spirit.

Between our four children and all the various sports, we have had both superstars and bench sitters. However, I think they would all agree that team sports overall were a great experience. By broadening the focus of the various high school sports booster clubs from fund raising to "fun raising", these organizations can enhance the team experience and encourage team spirit.. Booster clubs can help make each player feel a sense of belonging. Over the years, our Booster Club activities ranged from Team Tailgates, to door decorating, player gifts and Kick Off parties. By providing some balance of fun with the rigors of athletics, booster clubs can spread the team spirit. It takes time and energy to put together a pre-game breakfast for 80 football players, but it is well worth the effort. What started as a pre-playoff event, turned into a weekly Saturday morning caf hosted by the Dads! It was such a huge hit, that by the time my younger son was playing, we could have run a res taurant. For Friday night games, we organized "post walk through" dinners on Thursday nights.

Our girls were not left out in the cold. Soccer and Field Hockey benefited from booster club energies. They had a season Family Kick Off party. Funds short.. we improvised and assigned each grade level a category; desserts, drinks or salads. Seniors exempt! We used booster club funds for the pizzas. It was the perfect compromise! For more fun, we let the kids design team practice shirts, complete with their own tag line. They were meant for the practice field but the kids wore them all over the place. We made "pride pins" with the team mascot, player name and number for the parents. These buttons were so popular that they found their way into the locker rooms and a generic version turned out to be a great club fundraiser!

So as your son or daughter heads out to the practice field this August, find out who is running their team booster club and volunteer. Your child will appreciate it, you will enjoy it and you will have a whole new group of friends by the end of the season. We still have "team reunion" parties with one of our booster groups and it is 6years later. Check out some more fun team spirit ideas at Celebration Ideas Online Team Spirit Ideas

TBI in high school and college athletics - Law - Personal Injury

Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs quite frequently in high school and college athletics. Impaired cognitive functioning is often observed in athletes who have had multiple concussions.

Younger Athletes Recover Less Quickly

Athletes at several colleges and high schools participated in a recent study to compare cognition pre and post concussion. Concussions were defined by loss of consciousness and the length of time needed for changes in mental status to substantially improve. Study results showed that college athletes had lost consciousness at a higher rate than their high school athlete counterparts. Twenty-four hours after injury, athletes with concussions and control subjects had substantial memory differences. However, injured high school athletes experienced longer memory difficulties than did the injured collegiates. The researchers speculated that less mature brains are more vulnerable to brain injury and recovery less quickly.

Girls More Vulnerable to TBI

Another recent study determined that girls appear to experience higher concussion rates than boys in sports played by both boys and girls.

Researchers reviewed U.S. high school athletes' injuries among youths participating in the following sports: boys' football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, girls' soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball. They concluded that during the 2005-06 school year, high school athletes experienced approximately 135,901 concussions.

Young women participating in soccer had a 68 percent higher concussion rate than males participating in the same sport. In basketball, girls were an astonishing 200 percent more likely than their male counterparts to be injured with a concussion.

No Gain from Playing Through the Pain

The researchers expressed surprise at the huge discrepancy in injury rates, and hypothesized that boys' larger neck muscles might serve to better absorb shock and prevent injury. They also hinted at socio-cultural reasons for the different rates of injury. Boys are taught not to let others know when they are in pain and typically continue playing while injured unless knocked unconscious.

Playing through the pain of a concussion is one of the worst mistakes an athlete can make, leading to potentially lifelong debilitating injury.

High School Dayz - Self Help - Advice

Life is an opportunity for endless discovery of purpose. The continuity of life freezes peculiar moments in time and catches your heart wide open in unexpected ways.

I recently watched High School Musical 3, The Graduation with my children and father-in-law. While I leaned back to enjoy the flick, I didn't realize I was a sitting duck waiting for the bullet of time to knock me into a pivotal moment. The Disney series deals with students, musical plays, proms, friendship, and burgeoning love; this latest one in the series focused on coming-of-age, purpose and life after graduation. The characters came face-to-face with destiny, purpose and choices as their high school days came to a close. But first, they decided to produce one grander musical play as outgoing high school graduates.

As the music played and the scenes raced across the screen, something unusual happened. Time transported my mind back to my high school days at Walbrook Senior High. Out of the blue, like a spring shower, I began tearing up. Trying to disguise my tears in an inconspicuous fashion, I shifted in my chair and adjusted my glasses while wiping tears from my eyes and forced my mind back to the screen. But as soon as the tears stopped, the movie presented another memory-thumping scene. Faced with a choice between pursuing basketball or theater, one of the students agonized over his decision. The director of the musical sat in the dark auditorium unnoticed, watching the student sing about his choice. When he sang the last note of the musical number, the director told him the stage was a good place to discover oneself, and ten years from now, opportunity and choice may not be there. She then admitted she had submitted his name to the Juliet School of Arts.

Again, uncontrollable tears flowed down my cheeks like a river. I recalled being a high school student with hopes of a career on the stage. As the movie flickered on the silver screen in front of me, another one played within my head. The movie had found the combination to the locks on the gates of my heart, opened them, and unleashed my buried memories of lost opportunity and choice long forgotten.

The acting bug bit me in elementary school when I performed my first play as a king presenting his royal crown as a gift to Jesus, the newborn King of Kings. Memories of my acting days and my opportunity to go to Hollywood for a screen test rushed to the forefront. Dreams of wanting to be like my Tennis hero, Arthur Ashe, flooded my thoughts. Dreams of football stardom, a singing career, conducting an orchestra, modeling, becoming an astronaut and acting were the music of my opportunity. The promise of greatness in these fields slipped through my fingers. Time and opportunity passed by and none of these dreams materialized. I had thought memories of them would never resurface from the depths of my gated past. Watching High School Musical 3 proved otherwise.

Opportunity and choice had presented me many roads to follow, but I did not seize the moment; time moved forward and took opportunity and choice with it. I examined the movie and my life and almost descended into the dungeon of sadness and regret. But just as suddenly as the movie had snatched me to the past, life snatched me forward and I realized opportunity had not died for me, but had only changed. Another dream that I'd once had was to write and publish a book. In the heat of failure, disappointment, and divorce, my life went into an extended hiatus of obscurity and lackluster existence. But in the midst of this chaos, opportunity and choice changed, leading me back to the desire to write. This time, I accepted and pursued this dream without hesitation, and I succeeded when I published my first book, False Roads To Manhood, What Women Need To Know; What Men Need To Understand.

Though High School Musical 3 served as a key to unlock the inner core of my mind's memory, I'm the better for watching the movie. In a way, the movie shook buried skeletons of unfulfilled dreams and extracted unsettled regret from my psyche, ultimately turning my high school musical dreams of the past into an article of purpose. As I stood on the precipice of regret, regret said time is past, it's over! But, opportunity spoke out in resistance to say, "The time is now!" I choose now to release these words on paper in hopes that someone believes opportunity does not die.

The pinnacle lesson here is that we must not blink an eye at opportunity. We must not hesitate to pursue every God-given purpose and dream with everything we have. If something pursued does not pan out, remember that opportunity and choice changes and resurfaces. When it does, don't let regret steal it; instead, grab it with gusto and never look back. Looking in the rearview mirror of life too long causes us to wreck our futures by not paying attention to what awaits us now.

The young man in High School Musical 3 did not let opportunity slip by and chose to purse both theater and basketball by selecting a college offering both programs. Isn't it strange how a movie can dissect the heart of life and help us realize that even though high school ends, opportunity remains? Because we didn't reach our goals then is no reason to throw in the towel now. As my son once said, "There is no towel to throw in." Right now is an opportunity. Right now we can rediscover life and rediscover our life's goals. Within every person is a dream, and for every dream, opportunity knocks at the door. Will you take this opportunity and open the door? Will you harness opportunity with effort so tenacious it negates all obstacles?

God is a God of opportunity and he wants you to know that He knows the thoughts He thinks towards you, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11). High school days are past, but opportunity still knocks, waiting for you to say yes.

How You Can Help Your Gay Son Survive High School - Family - Parenting

I spent over thirty years teaching in highly selective universities. During that time, I had many conversations with my students, some of whom are gay. Often these gay students will tell me about their lives during their high school years. High school was a pleasant experience for some of the young men and women, but for many of them it seemed to be an agonizing experience. My students, naturally, managed to get through whatever bad experiences they had, at least well enough to be admitted to my university. However, I wonder about those who did not adapt as well to their sometimes daily traumas.

For some non-straight students, their home is not a pleasant environment and is highly unsupportive of any efforts on their part to maintain an academic focus. We know, for example, that approximately a third of gay students are physically abused by members of their own family (parents and/or siblings) due to their sexual orientation. We know that some of those gay students must actually leave their own home to insure their well-being. Some become homeless, while others move in with friends who have supportive parents. Hopefully you will work to provide a nurturing environment for your gay child.

Particularly if you have a gay son in high school, he may be experiencing a very difficult time there. Nearly half of all gay high school boys experience harassment at school. Often they find themselves too embarrassed to talk about it. Whether or not you accept their homosexuality, it is important to be able to talk to your son in a relaxed and open atmosphere to learn whether he is encountering those sorts of school problems. This means acknowledging that he is gay, something that many parents have a hard time doing. The alternative is possible academic failure or much worse. Gay youth are three to four times more likely to commit suicide than their straight counterparts.

Watch for whether your son or daughter is spending time with friends. Social contact with their age peers is essential for all teenagers, yet the majority of gay teens report feelings of isolation. If your child does not go out with friends or if no friends are coming to visit, you might check with a trusted teacher to see whether he or she seems to have friends at school. Encourage your child to join at least one extra-curricular activity at school. Whether it is the football team, the chess club, the chorus or the gay-straight alliance doesnt matter. Anything that involves interaction with other students on a regular basis is productive.

You need to do these things regardless of your personal views toward minority sexual orientations. Your job as a parent is to love your children and to foster their education during these critical years. The key to success in your role is to establish an environment that is conducive to genuinely open communication and learning.

Pinpointing And Encouraging High School Students' Passions - Self Help

"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else." - Judy Garland

Feeling passion for your work can often make the difference between a beautifully finished project and a half-baked result. Think about something you are passionate about and something that you had to do regardless of whether you were interested in it at all - whether a job, an assignment a project around the house.

Which did you work harder at? Which did you finish on time? Which did you feel proud of when you were done? Which made the time fly by, no matter how much effort you were exerting?

With high school students, passion can be the difference between a student who graduates and one who doesn't, a student who turns their culminating (senior) project into a launch pad for their future and one who barely squeaks by, or a student who is excited to continue on their path to college and one who only feels an obligation to continue their education.

More importantly, having a solid set of goals linked to their passion while they select their college will increase their chances of succeeding at a higher level of education.

Not to mention, understanding their passions is something that will serve them long after graduation as well. According to research that appeared in the Harvard Business Review (2007), self-awareness is the number one capability for leaders to develop.

How can you help your students find their passions?

- Encourage them to experience new things - their calling may be something they never thought of, or something that is only covered outside of the classroom.

- Ask them to explore small seeds of interest, even if they fall outside of their comfort zone. If they are drawn to the debate team even though they've never tried public speaking, encourage them to learn more about the topic.

- Simply ask them what they enjoy doing most. Even if it is not necessarily something that can be easily translated into a career, try to see the fundamentals of the activities or subjects they enjoy. Try to go deeper into why they enjoy what they enjoy.

- If they have zeroed in on their passion, ask them to expand on it. If their passion is being the football quarterback, don't have them stop there. Have them explore related topics, like sports fitness, weight training, sports journalism, or coaching. Help them see how their passion can grow in a number of surprising directions.

Having a focused passion is not only important to a student's development, it is also something that colleges look for when accepting the incoming class. How can a student stand out in the application pools?

There are 26,000 high schools in the country - that means there are 26,000 homecoming queens, 26,000 student council presidents, and 26,000 valedictorians.

Some think that doing as many things as possible is the answer - that being involved in the most activities and taking all of the hardest classes is the right route. However, in truth, showing one or two passions often makes you stand out from the pack.

Not only that, but having one or two clear passions will motivate your students to think outside of the box when it comes to activities. If a student isn't sure what they are interested in, they might join the groups that are most available to them - yearbook, sports, debate club, prom committee, cheerleading.

If she/he does have a clear interest - women's rights - they will become involved in activities outside of their high school that are more impressive and that show motivation and true interest. Before you know it, their application will mention a women's group they started in their school, protests they attended, and petitions that they spearheaded to change unfair school policies.

The most powerful aspect of passion is that it gives all people the motivation, inspiration, and driving force to do extraordinary things. Students are not going to do amazing things just to get into the college of their choice, and they aren't going to ace a large assignment just because someone asked them to complete it by a certain date.

Passion is what takes us above and beyond ordinary expectations and passion is what makes us excited for our futures. Sparking student passion by encouraging them to follow and expand on their true interests and making them self-aware of their talents, learning's and gifts may be the single most important step you can take toward molding a successful student and content adult.

Experience in the High School - Sports

As our mascot proceeded to rip his shirt off and yell at the head of his lungs, the bunch replied with strange enthusiasm. My ears pounded from all the cheering. I had just moved to this small town, but it would never give up surprising me. I was from a large town and had never seen high school mascots get so enthused for a game. Fri. night at our school's football game was surely the place to be. High school spirit was going at full speed and we all wanted part of it.I quickly handed the concession employee two bucks and took a deep scent of my steaming cup of hot chocolate. You couldn't get a better hot chocolate than at the soccer gamea reason for coming all on its own. There were secrets this town held that I was discovering each day. Between highschool hot chocolate and the town's drive through soda- shop, I was set. The night air was crisp and autumn had definitely claimed its arrival to this farming community. I zipped my newly acquired jean jacket up and headed bac k to the stands. As cold as it was, the weather did nothing to moisten the spirits of our school. Even our soccer team who was on a loosing streak for the last 5 games could not lessen our spirits. I learned that anything a school has going against it, highschool mascots could make up for it without trouble. Picking the right person to represent your school is essential! The senior boy they'd picked was the right mixture of personality, looks, and craziness. The girls were smitten, and they fellows all had his back. Other high school mascots had zip on him. Our school had done a superb job with his mascot costume, and he wore it with pride. Being a newcomer, I asked a chum how he was selected for his position. She claimed it seemed to be a combined effort of student and teacher voting. I noiselessly wondered how any highschool mascots could ever measure up. I watched as he interacted with the scholars and fans that night, and wondered where he got the giant amounts of energy he displayed! It baffled me that such a little city high school could have such huge spirit. There really wasn't a lot to be pumped up about on the field, but it did not matter one bit.During faculty the week after next I kept a loose eye on our mascot. Between classes, during lunch, and after school he was at work! It seemed to be his personal job/mission to excite the scholars about being in this institution. It wasn't just a costume he put on each weekend, but a full time perspective he wore daily. Were other high school mascots on their game as much as he was? The halls were a little brighter and activities a ton livelier when he was around. I knew I would always pay closer attention to other highschool mascots from this point on. They definitely deserve the recognition, working so diligently to make high school a fun experience for the rest of us.

How Your SEO Campaign Compares to High School - Search Engines - SE Optimization

Launching your website and embarking on a search engine optimization endeavor, is much like revisiting your social interactions; of school. High School social life, in particular. Your pubescent self esteem and, in this instance the success of your website; is based upon your popularity. On the Internet, this is said to be achieved by establishing meaningful links; using strategies like link building and performance based SEO. In the eyes of Search Engines, these act as a vote and a means of measuring your credibility, and in turn; your popularity. Kind of a, "Yeah, I know him; he's cool!" However, this is where the plot really thickens.

The weight of the vote that is cast in your favor, is also measured by the popularity of the person (website) giving it. Let me give you an example. Everyone in the Geography Club may say that they all know you and you're really great; however that is unlikely to boost your overall popularity in school. Make no mistake, every little bit helps. Especially when the Football and Swim Teams start to hear your name often; and begin to recognize you on their own. Of course, the Football and Swim teams represent Search Engines and Directories.

Web merchants should be aware that, there are more rapid means of increasing their Web site's popularity; than the traditional "word of mouth" approach. Here is the Layman's approach to SEO for small business:

Throw a party! Send out invitations to the popular people and ask them to come visit you. This is known as a Search Engine hand submission. You must take the time to individually submit your website to the most popular Search Engines and Directories; inviting them to come and "crawl yo' crib". I bet you have heard how High School kids love parties; especially the popular kids. Before inviting your guests, make certain that your hair is done right, you have no pimples and there is plenty to do when everyone gets there. This is known as rich, meaningful content; not to be confused with streamers and balloons. Web merchants, need to be aware that, the popular people (Google, Yahoo!, Bing) always have somewhere else to go. At any moment, they might realize that you do not have what they are looking for; and move on. The best that you can hope for is that they have stayed long enough to get to know you; and want to visit again.

Now, it is time to address the facade of the High School image. Trying to be what everyone else wants you to be. In an effort to become more popular, some students will pretend to be something they are not. Most often, deceitful practices often result in embarrassing consequences; both in High School and cyberspace. Search Engines may not be able to read, but they certainly can recognize. If your clothes and image (meta tags) don't reflect what is truly inside (website content), the smart and popular people will see through it; and avoid you. What's worse? They'll tell everyone they know. Do not pretend to be something you are not. If you do and get caught; it will be a long time before even your friends around again.

Hiring a Corporate SEO firm, is much like having a popular older sibling; attending the same school. This trusted ally can make meaningful introductions, and advise on which people to avoid. This approach can quickly increase your popularity, prevent embrassing situations; and avoid wasted time.
