College Sports Recruiting Opportunities Help Girls Through Bad Economy - Sports

When contemplating strategies for getting financial help with colleges in such a dire economy, getting recruited to play college sports should be at the top of any student-athlete's list. Given that premise, in the environment that men's college football recruiting has created, girls rule, and mens football recruiting may be the best thing that ever happened to womens college recruiting.

How does mens football recruiting fit into the equation? A disproportionately large number of mens scholarships go to football (up to 85 per school). To equalize sports opportunities across both genders, colleges support a broad range of womens sports via scholarships. In fact, female athletes who start planning very early in high school may even be able to pick up a sport they have never competed in before, and find great athletic scholarship opportunities through the college recruiting process. And for those who worry that athletics will take the focus off of academics, fear not, as female athletes have even higher college graduation rates than female college students who dont compet e (Division 1 -71% vs. 64%, and Division 2 -64% vs. 51%--compiled from NCAA sources).

By the time girls get to high school, most know if they're athletically inclined, and they have usually narrowed in on one or two sports of choice. But reality sometimes intervenes. A female student-athlete may have picked a sport that is highly competitive and she doesnt make the team. She may not like the coaching staff or they may not like her. She may have an injury that prevents her from pursuing her sport of choice. She may be interested in other things like student government or theatre, which conflict with the timing of the sport season. Or she may just get burned out or bored with her sport. What should a committed student-athlete do if she can't pursue her favorite sport?

There are all kinds of interesting sports opportunities available to girls who are willing to learn about them. Scholarships are offered for women in 24 sports in Division 1 and Division 2. If these sports are not offered at the high school level, there are probably club or recreational teams available somewhere nearby. It may be fairly easy to establish oneself as a player because many of these sports don't necessarily get the press that more high profile sports like women's basketball or volleyball get, so it may be more of a struggle for college programs to recruit players.

Here's what the landscape looks like. For girls, the sports that are offered at a large percentage of colleges and offer a fair number of scholarships per school are:

Basketball Volleyball Cross country/track and field Soccer Tennis Softball Golf Swimming/Diving

Here are some sports that arent available in as many schools, but have plenty of scholarships to give at the schools that have programs:

Field Hockey Gymnastics Lacrosse Rowing Equestrian Ice Hockey

And here's a fairly long list of sports that are offered in fewer schools and with less scholarships per school but they still have scholarships to give. Coaches in these programs may have a harder time filling these spots so they might offer great opportunities as well:

Bowling Fencing Skiing Synchronized swim Water Polo Archery Badminton Rugby Squash Team Handball

I am the mother of boys, not girls, but I know a good sale when I see one. Colleges are serving up a double whammy right nowvery difficult to get accepted, even more difficult to figure out how to pay for it. Participating in college athletics may make a student-athlete more attractive to an admissions committee, and may result in a scholarship that will cover a large part of the cost. If I was the mother of a female student-athlete and my daughter were even moderately inclined toward athletics, but hadn't settled on one sport yet, or was shut out from the sport she loved for some reason, I would encourage her to expand her athletic horizons a little.

So go ahead, girls -- pick up a hockey stick (field or ice, any kind will do), a bow and arrow, a fencing foil, a bowling ball, or another sporting implement you haven't experienced before. Do a little research to see what schools offer scholarship programs for women in these sports. If these schools match your general criteria for a good college fit, you should pursue them. A few years of training and the world is wide open to you, if youre a dedicated female athlete.

Get More Information on New York Summer High Schools - Education

Getting an internship while in high school is not common practice, but it can pave the way for the student's future career. High school work experience in an area of career interest will provide the student with valuable skills and experience. Very few high school state champions or NCAA champions wrestle only during the regular scholastic season. Most elite wrestlers do not simply wrestle three or four months out of the year. Per iodization is simply the planning of your training for a specific period of time. Different types of Periodization exist including linear, undulating, concurrent, and conjugate. Periodization consists primarily of three phases: the preparatory, competitive, and transition phases.

Whether looking for a Christian academy, Jewish academy, private high schools or private elementary schools, taking a school tour is usually the first step in the application process. Tours, or open houses, are done differently in each school. Therefore, touring with a purpose is important in finding and getting into the private school of your choice. Touring a private school is much more than seeing if you get that "good" feeling about the place. Going on a tour is like looking for a job. You want a place where you can grow, be challenged and that will be fun. To do that you need to... rock your private school tours!

Free New York online high schools are becoming increasingly common. Less than three years ago, a student would have to look far and wide to find a program that was not either a commercial school or a university-based school. There are three basic kinds of free online high schools. They are: Charter schools, Department of Education-sponsored or school-district-sponsored schools, Corporate-sponsored, but state-approved schools. It's no surprise that New York high-school football is a dangerous sport. Permission for child to play means accepting the increased risk of torn ligaments, broken bones, and head injuries. But most recently, child safety experts have suggested that the risk of head injuries could be much higher than originally thought. But High School Football was the greatest preparation for the challenges that life could deliver. Participating in high school football sports is important for motor skill development, maintaining a healthy exercise program and provide s for a release of anger when the academic stressors become overwhelming.

If you are serious about making college coaches aware of you and your basketball abilities and skills, attend a fall NCAA-certified event. An NCAA-Certified event is a basketball tournament or camp that college coaches attend to see play of girls basketball high school. The NCAA has to approve the event in order for it to be considered certified. Once your basketball season is over don't sit down and do nothing. This creates stagnation in your performance and development. If possible, find a team to play with. Playing with a team during the summer months in New York provides great benefits for a player.

The point is that New York junior Middle Schools recognize younger kids shouldn't be treated like older kids. Many of the original concepts have fallen by the way side, but much of the core, like interdisciplinary courses, Connections courses, common planning time, and the team centered scheduling approach remain an active part of schools today. Before summer truly begins a special occasion must take place for it to really be summer vacation, and that's graduation. A graduation gift for a Middle School/Junior High Grad has to be something that your pre-teen or new teen will enjoy.

Preparing the High School Body for Collegiate Baseball - Sports

Preparing the High School Body for Collegiate Baseball by Coach Dan Huff, CSCS

If you are like most high school baseball players you are much more than just a baseball player. You are also involved in basketball, football, soccer, and maybe even track and field. This means that you are also required to train for baseball as well as basketball, football, soccer, and maybe even track and field. This leaves very little room for sport specific training.

The chances are that you are in pre-season training all year long. As soon as baseball season ends you begin pre-season training for football. As soon as football season ends you begin pre-season training for basketball, and so on...

Now don't get me wrong, there is definitely a place (and a very important one) for pre-season training, but the pre-season is just the icing on the cake. And what kind of cake would you have if it was only icing?

When you get to college you can expect a drastic change in your training styles because along with your pre-season training you will also have off-season, post-season, and in-season training. In other words, you will be training for baseball 52 weeks out of the year.

Keep this in mind during your junior and senior years of high school as you are getting ready to move onto the next level of competition. If you can begin training like a collegiate baseball player before you get to college you will have a step up on your fellow incoming freshmen.

The first thing that you will need to realize is that next season starts the day after this season ends. Sure, we will not be training all out the day after the season ends, but we will have opening day in our sights. Your training calendar needs to begin with post season training, a 4 to 6 week period where you allow your body to recover from the physical demands of the season. This is where you will be visiting your athletic training room for rehab treatments and doing a lot of low intensity work to give your body a chance to take it easy without taking it off.

After these 4-6 weeks you will begin to pump up the intensity and move into your off-season training. During the off-season you will be building your foundation for the next season. If you are lacking in strength, that will be your focus. If you are lacking in power, that will be your focus. If you are lacking in speed, that will be your focus. The key word in those statements is focus. That does not mean that we are not at all interested in the other components, we are simply focusing on your weakness.

After 8-12 weeks of off-season training you will move into your pre-season training. This is the 12 weeks leading up to your opening day. During this phase of training you will we working on the key components of the game, arm strength, acceleration, change of direction, rotational power, ect... These components will be built on the foundation that you developed during the off-season. Your in-season training will usually be 2 days of training each week consisting of preventative exercises so that you can maintain the healthiest body possible during the season.

The sooner you can prepare your body for this type of year long training for one specific sport the better off you will be during your college career.

High School Reunions: How to Handle Them - Other

There is no way around it: whether you're going to your fifty year, bragging about grandkids and showing off new teeth, or going to your ten year, bragging about degrees received and showing off new cars, high school reunions can be uncomfortable. Part of this lies in the fact that people change, losing touch with those they once copied off of in second period math. But, mostly it's because no matter how old people become, they always seem to somewhat care what their high school peers think of them. You can take the person out of high school but you can't take the high school out of them. Still, it's not impossible to make reunions comfortable. With a little planning, and a little restraint, you may find yourself being as cool as you always thought you were.Don't Have Pre-conceived NotionsWe all wonder what happened to the quarterback of the football team, the head cheerleader, the senior class president, and the class oddball who only wore black and skipped around with ba gpipes. While we have assumptions of what became of whom, don't be so immersed in who you think people have become that you are unwillingly to see who they really are. People often turn out different than even they think they will and the version of them now can be 180 degrees from what they once were. Think about it this way: are you the same person you were in high school? Probably not. Don't Say you Invented Post-itsExaggeration and reunions seem to go with each other, as if they arrived together in an old beat up Honda but called it a Hummer. Still, exaggeration is risky and tainted with desperation. Few things are more uncomfortable than exaggerating, and getting caught by those you're trying to impress. If you feel a need to enhance a little, keep it to a minimum; don't say you are married to someone who looks like Mel Gibson, when you really are married to someone who looks like Mel Brooks. Don't Bring up old BeefMost people had a high school nemesis, that one person with whom they just never got along. While it may have been fine to shun this person in high school, a time when shunning was not only acceptable but highly conducive to social standing, reunions are meant to be peaceful, and full of maturity. A reunion is a time to leave water under the bridge, not a time to open up a flood gate. Don't Only Talk to Those You KnowMost of us have a small group of high school friends who we still keep in touch with, even years later. While we'll see them at the reunion, we'll also see them at poker on Saturday night and at softball on Tuesday afternoon. Instead of spending all your time catching up with those you've already caught, reach out to those you haven't seen in years. Even if you weren't friends with them in high school, you might find, as adults, you have more in common.

Boost Team Spirit! Great Ideas For High School Sports Booster Clubs - Sports

July had become our new vacation month. After years of dodging the "dog days" of August up in Lake George, NY our family had to adapt to a new schedule. Starting in 1995, August revolved around High School fall sports and their pre-season practices. So over the years as our four participated in soccer, field hockey and football during the month of August, I became involved with the various team booster clubs. While the kids ran, lifted, sweated and practiced, I was busy with the Boosters getting activities planned for the season. High school sports booster clubs, if run with spirit and enthusiasm, are a great means of boosting team spirit.

Between our four children and all the various sports, we have had both superstars and bench sitters. However, I think they would all agree that team sports overall were a great experience. By broadening the focus of the various high school sports booster clubs from fund raising to "fun raising", these organizations can enhance the team experience and encourage team spirit.. Booster clubs can help make each player feel a sense of belonging. Over the years, our Booster Club activities ranged from Team Tailgates, to door decorating, player gifts and Kick Off parties. By providing some balance of fun with the rigors of athletics, booster clubs can spread the team spirit. It takes time and energy to put together a pre-game breakfast for 80 football players, but it is well worth the effort. What started as a pre-playoff event, turned into a weekly Saturday morning caf hosted by the Dads! It was such a huge hit, that by the time my younger son was playing, we could have run a res taurant. For Friday night games, we organized "post walk through" dinners on Thursday nights.

Our girls were not left out in the cold. Soccer and Field Hockey benefited from booster club energies. They had a season Family Kick Off party. Funds short.. we improvised and assigned each grade level a category; desserts, drinks or salads. Seniors exempt! We used booster club funds for the pizzas. It was the perfect compromise! For more fun, we let the kids design team practice shirts, complete with their own tag line. They were meant for the practice field but the kids wore them all over the place. We made "pride pins" with the team mascot, player name and number for the parents. These buttons were so popular that they found their way into the locker rooms and a generic version turned out to be a great club fundraiser!

So as your son or daughter heads out to the practice field this August, find out who is running their team booster club and volunteer. Your child will appreciate it, you will enjoy it and you will have a whole new group of friends by the end of the season. We still have "team reunion" parties with one of our booster groups and it is 6years later. Check out some more fun team spirit ideas at Celebration Ideas Online Team Spirit Ideas

TBI in high school and college athletics - Law - Personal Injury

Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs quite frequently in high school and college athletics. Impaired cognitive functioning is often observed in athletes who have had multiple concussions.

Younger Athletes Recover Less Quickly

Athletes at several colleges and high schools participated in a recent study to compare cognition pre and post concussion. Concussions were defined by loss of consciousness and the length of time needed for changes in mental status to substantially improve. Study results showed that college athletes had lost consciousness at a higher rate than their high school athlete counterparts. Twenty-four hours after injury, athletes with concussions and control subjects had substantial memory differences. However, injured high school athletes experienced longer memory difficulties than did the injured collegiates. The researchers speculated that less mature brains are more vulnerable to brain injury and recovery less quickly.

Girls More Vulnerable to TBI

Another recent study determined that girls appear to experience higher concussion rates than boys in sports played by both boys and girls.

Researchers reviewed U.S. high school athletes' injuries among youths participating in the following sports: boys' football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, girls' soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball. They concluded that during the 2005-06 school year, high school athletes experienced approximately 135,901 concussions.

Young women participating in soccer had a 68 percent higher concussion rate than males participating in the same sport. In basketball, girls were an astonishing 200 percent more likely than their male counterparts to be injured with a concussion.

No Gain from Playing Through the Pain

The researchers expressed surprise at the huge discrepancy in injury rates, and hypothesized that boys' larger neck muscles might serve to better absorb shock and prevent injury. They also hinted at socio-cultural reasons for the different rates of injury. Boys are taught not to let others know when they are in pain and typically continue playing while injured unless knocked unconscious.

Playing through the pain of a concussion is one of the worst mistakes an athlete can make, leading to potentially lifelong debilitating injury.

Football is one of the most popular sports in the world, not just as a spectator sport but also at participation level, from school football teams to Sunday league clubs, football remains a sport with a very high quantity of amateur participants. At the same time as purchasing your new strip, why not give your entire team image an overhaul by re-working your team identity? High School Dayz - Self Help - Advice

Life is an opportunity for endless discovery of purpose. The continuity of life freezes peculiar moments in time and catches your heart wide open in unexpected ways.

I recently watched High School Musical 3, The Graduation with my children and father-in-law. While I leaned back to enjoy the flick, I didn't realize I was a sitting duck waiting for the bullet of time to knock me into a pivotal moment. The Disney series deals with students, musical plays, proms, friendship, and burgeoning love; this latest one in the series focused on coming-of-age, purpose and life after graduation. The characters came face-to-face with destiny, purpose and choices as their high school days came to a close. But first, they decided to produce one grander musical play as outgoing high school graduates.

As the music played and the scenes raced across the screen, something unusual happened. Time transported my mind back to my high school days at Walbrook Senior High. Out of the blue, like a spring shower, I began tearing up. Trying to disguise my tears in an inconspicuous fashion, I shifted in my chair and adjusted my glasses while wiping tears from my eyes and forced my mind back to the screen. But as soon as the tears stopped, the movie presented another memory-thumping scene. Faced with a choice between pursuing basketball or theater, one of the students agonized over his decision. The director of the musical sat in the dark auditorium unnoticed, watching the student sing about his choice. When he sang the last note of the musical number, the director told him the stage was a good place to discover oneself, and ten years from now, opportunity and choice may not be there. She then admitted she had submitted his name to the Juliet School of Arts.

Again, uncontrollable tears flowed down my cheeks like a river. I recalled being a high school student with hopes of a career on the stage. As the movie flickered on the silver screen in front of me, another one played within my head. The movie had found the combination to the locks on the gates of my heart, opened them, and unleashed my buried memories of lost opportunity and choice long forgotten.

The acting bug bit me in elementary school when I performed my first play as a king presenting his royal crown as a gift to Jesus, the newborn King of Kings. Memories of my acting days and my opportunity to go to Hollywood for a screen test rushed to the forefront. Dreams of wanting to be like my Tennis hero, Arthur Ashe, flooded my thoughts. Dreams of football stardom, a singing career, conducting an orchestra, modeling, becoming an astronaut and acting were the music of my opportunity. The promise of greatness in these fields slipped through my fingers. Time and opportunity passed by and none of these dreams materialized. I had thought memories of them would never resurface from the depths of my gated past. Watching High School Musical 3 proved otherwise.

Opportunity and choice had presented me many roads to follow, but I did not seize the moment; time moved forward and took opportunity and choice with it. I examined the movie and my life and almost descended into the dungeon of sadness and regret. But just as suddenly as the movie had snatched me to the past, life snatched me forward and I realized opportunity had not died for me, but had only changed. Another dream that I'd once had was to write and publish a book. In the heat of failure, disappointment, and divorce, my life went into an extended hiatus of obscurity and lackluster existence. But in the midst of this chaos, opportunity and choice changed, leading me back to the desire to write. This time, I accepted and pursued this dream without hesitation, and I succeeded when I published my first book, False Roads To Manhood, What Women Need To Know; What Men Need To Understand.

Though High School Musical 3 served as a key to unlock the inner core of my mind's memory, I'm the better for watching the movie. In a way, the movie shook buried skeletons of unfulfilled dreams and extracted unsettled regret from my psyche, ultimately turning my high school musical dreams of the past into an article of purpose. As I stood on the precipice of regret, regret said time is past, it's over! But, opportunity spoke out in resistance to say, "The time is now!" I choose now to release these words on paper in hopes that someone believes opportunity does not die.

The pinnacle lesson here is that we must not blink an eye at opportunity. We must not hesitate to pursue every God-given purpose and dream with everything we have. If something pursued does not pan out, remember that opportunity and choice changes and resurfaces. When it does, don't let regret steal it; instead, grab it with gusto and never look back. Looking in the rearview mirror of life too long causes us to wreck our futures by not paying attention to what awaits us now.

The young man in High School Musical 3 did not let opportunity slip by and chose to purse both theater and basketball by selecting a college offering both programs. Isn't it strange how a movie can dissect the heart of life and help us realize that even though high school ends, opportunity remains? Because we didn't reach our goals then is no reason to throw in the towel now. As my son once said, "There is no towel to throw in." Right now is an opportunity. Right now we can rediscover life and rediscover our life's goals. Within every person is a dream, and for every dream, opportunity knocks at the door. Will you take this opportunity and open the door? Will you harness opportunity with effort so tenacious it negates all obstacles?

God is a God of opportunity and he wants you to know that He knows the thoughts He thinks towards you, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11). High school days are past, but opportunity still knocks, waiting for you to say yes.

Coached High School Softball Softball - Sports

How You Can Help Your Gay Son Survive High School - Family - Parenting

I spent over thirty years teaching in highly selective universities. During that time, I had many conversations with my students, some of whom are gay. Often these gay students will tell me about their lives during their high school years. High school was a pleasant experience for some of the young men and women, but for many of them it seemed to be an agonizing experience. My students, naturally, managed to get through whatever bad experiences they had, at least well enough to be admitted to my university. However, I wonder about those who did not adapt as well to their sometimes daily traumas.

For some non-straight students, their home is not a pleasant environment and is highly unsupportive of any efforts on their part to maintain an academic focus. We know, for example, that approximately a third of gay students are physically abused by members of their own family (parents and/or siblings) due to their sexual orientation. We know that some of those gay students must actually leave their own home to insure their well-being. Some become homeless, while others move in with friends who have supportive parents. Hopefully you will work to provide a nurturing environment for your gay child.

Particularly if you have a gay son in high school, he may be experiencing a very difficult time there. Nearly half of all gay high school boys experience harassment at school. Often they find themselves too embarrassed to talk about it. Whether or not you accept their homosexuality, it is important to be able to talk to your son in a relaxed and open atmosphere to learn whether he is encountering those sorts of school problems. This means acknowledging that he is gay, something that many parents have a hard time doing. The alternative is possible academic failure or much worse. Gay youth are three to four times more likely to commit suicide than their straight counterparts.

Watch for whether your son or daughter is spending time with friends. Social contact with their age peers is essential for all teenagers, yet the majority of gay teens report feelings of isolation. If your child does not go out with friends or if no friends are coming to visit, you might check with a trusted teacher to see whether he or she seems to have friends at school. Encourage your child to join at least one extra-curricular activity at school. Whether it is the football team, the chess club, the chorus or the gay-straight alliance doesnt matter. Anything that involves interaction with other students on a regular basis is productive.

You need to do these things regardless of your personal views toward minority sexual orientations. Your job as a parent is to love your children and to foster their education during these critical years. The key to success in your role is to establish an environment that is conducive to genuinely open communication and learning.

Pinpointing And Encouraging High School Students' Passions - Self Help

"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else." - Judy Garland

Feeling passion for your work can often make the difference between a beautifully finished project and a half-baked result. Think about something you are passionate about and something that you had to do regardless of whether you were interested in it at all - whether a job, an assignment a project around the house.

Which did you work harder at? Which did you finish on time? Which did you feel proud of when you were done? Which made the time fly by, no matter how much effort you were exerting?

With high school students, passion can be the difference between a student who graduates and one who doesn't, a student who turns their culminating (senior) project into a launch pad for their future and one who barely squeaks by, or a student who is excited to continue on their path to college and one who only feels an obligation to continue their education.

More importantly, having a solid set of goals linked to their passion while they select their college will increase their chances of succeeding at a higher level of education.

Not to mention, understanding their passions is something that will serve them long after graduation as well. According to research that appeared in the Harvard Business Review (2007), self-awareness is the number one capability for leaders to develop.

How can you help your students find their passions?

- Encourage them to experience new things - their calling may be something they never thought of, or something that is only covered outside of the classroom.

- Ask them to explore small seeds of interest, even if they fall outside of their comfort zone. If they are drawn to the debate team even though they've never tried public speaking, encourage them to learn more about the topic.

- Simply ask them what they enjoy doing most. Even if it is not necessarily something that can be easily translated into a career, try to see the fundamentals of the activities or subjects they enjoy. Try to go deeper into why they enjoy what they enjoy.

- If they have zeroed in on their passion, ask them to expand on it. If their passion is being the football quarterback, don't have them stop there. Have them explore related topics, like sports fitness, weight training, sports journalism, or coaching. Help them see how their passion can grow in a number of surprising directions.

Having a focused passion is not only important to a student's development, it is also something that colleges look for when accepting the incoming class. How can a student stand out in the application pools?

There are 26,000 high schools in the country - that means there are 26,000 homecoming queens, 26,000 student council presidents, and 26,000 valedictorians.

Some think that doing as many things as possible is the answer - that being involved in the most activities and taking all of the hardest classes is the right route. However, in truth, showing one or two passions often makes you stand out from the pack.

Not only that, but having one or two clear passions will motivate your students to think outside of the box when it comes to activities. If a student isn't sure what they are interested in, they might join the groups that are most available to them - yearbook, sports, debate club, prom committee, cheerleading.

If she/he does have a clear interest - women's rights - they will become involved in activities outside of their high school that are more impressive and that show motivation and true interest. Before you know it, their application will mention a women's group they started in their school, protests they attended, and petitions that they spearheaded to change unfair school policies.

The most powerful aspect of passion is that it gives all people the motivation, inspiration, and driving force to do extraordinary things. Students are not going to do amazing things just to get into the college of their choice, and they aren't going to ace a large assignment just because someone asked them to complete it by a certain date.

Passion is what takes us above and beyond ordinary expectations and passion is what makes us excited for our futures. Sparking student passion by encouraging them to follow and expand on their true interests and making them self-aware of their talents, learning's and gifts may be the single most important step you can take toward molding a successful student and content adult.

Texas Divorce Stars in Denison - Law - Internet Law

One expects that Denison, Texas (pop. 24,000) is much like any other small town.

Folks greet each other by nickname ("hey Stinky, have you seen Butter Hands?"), Friday nights are given completely to high school football, and you'd better be careful who you cut off on the road -- chances are, you'll be sitting next to them at Bingo, or maybe on a jury. Yes, Denison is almost certainly a lot like the countless other small towns that dot the American landscape.

Except for one unusual fact: it's also the country's divorce capital.

Indeed, that's the (dubious) distinction bestowed on the little north Texas town by a US Census Bureau/Bloomberg BusinessWeek study, which claims a whopping 20% of all Denison residents over 15 years of age are divorced -- almost twice the national average.

So what's behind this Texas divorce boom? Married (at least as of this writing) Denison resident Jennifer Gage thinks it could have something to do with how young people are when they're getting married.

And while the statistics paint a dismal picture, Pastor Mark Mitchell of Denison's First Baptist Church thinks some good will out of it. Referring to the "sheet" of issues that his ministry listed as important, the Pastor told Dallas-Forth Worth Fox affiliate KDFW: "When this study hit the news, I'm looking at our sheet. Divorce care was not on it. It is now...the dialogue has begun. What we have to do now is figure out how to address it."

Dallas Cowboy Fan - Sports

Dallas Cowboy FanBy Jawface, Jawface.com

It's football season again and I am ready. I bought a brand new big screen television with all the amenities. I have the NFL Sunday ticket from Direct TV and I am walking around with a chip on my shoulder. Now, I just have to find out what team I am going to route for. I have been a fan of almost every NFL team, from the Tennessee Titans to the Pittsburg Steelers. I love them all except one team, The Dallas Cowboys. They have been a thorn in my side for years.

I used to be a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, but the Cowboys changed this for me. During the glory years, the Cowboys won many games and went to the playoffs year after year. The Cowboys won a couple of Super Bowls, which made me proud to be a fan. The Cowboys were my true love.

Like most football fans, I used to win a lot of money betting on the Dallas Cowboys. I am no major gambler, but at least I used to win enough money to keep gas in the car. Then, the tide changed. The Cowboys stated losing games and I started losing a lot of money. The Cowboys were losing games that they should easily win. Some of the games were lost in embarrassing fashion. For example, the Cowboys would botch a 10-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in a playoff game. The Cowboys would also let a team with few wins come into Texas Stadium and make the Cowboys look like a high school football team. It was a sad day to be a Cowboy fan.

In the past, I loved going to work on Monday mornings to brag about the Cowboys. I talked a lot of noise and many of the conversations at work were about the Cowboys. I may have received my promotion because my boss was a Cowboy fan as well. I would even go to work early just to meet non-Cowboy fans in the parking lot so I could start bragging. After the team started losing games, I would be the last person to make it to work. I was disciplined for being tardy on several occasions. I went from a superior employee to a dude in just couple of weeks. Then again, a couple of bad loses by the Cowboys. Especially since my boss who was a Cowboy fan was fired. I am not saying that the Cowboys got him fired, but his luck also changed when the Cowboys started losing.

I started to despise the Cowboys. Not only did I lose money betting on the Cowboys, I also received a lot of ridicule from peers. I even filed for divorce from my first wife because she bought me a Dallas Cowboy jacket for Christmas. I did not mind all extra-marital affairs by my wife, or even her going months at a time without cooking. However, the minute she bought me the jacket, she had to go. I could accept being cheated on, but I could not accept the cruelty of her buying me the jacket. It's like she was rubbing it in my face.

I have not talked to one of my sons in years. We have had problems in the past but would find a way to communicate and make things better. Things changed when he moved to Dallas, Texas. We could never see eye to eye on anything. Maybe the curse of living near Texas Stadium changed him.

I have lost a lot being a Dallas Cowboy fan and I'm not going to let the Cowboys ruin another football season for me. I have decided to bet on any team that plays the Cowboys. Maybe I can get some of the money back that I lost betting on the Cowboys to win. I will be rich in no time. I could probably earn enough to buy the team, and then they would be my favorite team again.Find friends, meet people and discuss everyday Topics at

SkyCam Crashes at the Insight Bowl - Law - Personal Injury

Just yesterday we brought you the story of the unmanned electric cart that injured seven people at a high school football division championship game. It seems that the football fields are getting increasingly dangerous, with new technologies going haywire. Just last week, at the Insight Bowl a flying camera came crashing down on the field, just missing Iowa receiver Martin McNutt Jr.

Although McNutt dodged a potentially harmful situation, he still became entangled in the guide wire. McNutt recalls that "[The wire] was just pulling me and I knew I didn't want to keep going with it." ESPN's spokesman said the company who supplies the cameras, SkyCam, a division of Winnercomm Inc. will be conducting a thorough review to determine how this accident even happened to begin with. They also plan on creating a course of action for the future of their flying cameras.

The flying camera has been used so consistently for football footage, most players and fans barely notice they're there anymore. They have become a staple for Monday Night Football, and are even used for other sports, such as basketball, hockey, NASCAR and even baseball. The cameras rarely interfere with the games, and have yet to cause any problems.

There have been two incidents of issues with the cameras, but neither resulted in the crashing of the camera to the ground. In 2007 one camera was forced to make a descent during an NFL game from a "human error." Then in 2009 another camera was taken down due to wind gusts of around 40 mph. Never has a camera crashed to the field as it did last week.

Luckily, McNutt was a good sport about the incident. After the game he even joked that "I feel like somebody was trying to kill me on their (Oklahoma's) staff," he said. "If you are looking, I'm looking for you. No. It was lucky it didn't hit me." McNutt narrowly dodges the camera and suffered minor scratches. The game was delayed for about five minutes as the crew cleaned up the camera and wire.

Iowa was unable to rally in the last ten minutes and lost the game to No. 19 team Oklahoma 31-14. While the incident left none injured, it could have been a serious and potentially life-threatening accident. The cameras weigh around 30 pounds and when falling from 10-20 feet, could have become a dangerous weapon.

Green Bay Packers Most Colorful and Intersting Backgrounds - Sports

The Green Bay Packers probably have one of the most, if not the most, colorful and most interesting backgrounds in the history of professional football. They are located in Green Bay, Wisconsin and are in the NFC of the NFL. They are the third oldest franchise team in the NFL. They started out as a small town team of the kind that was commonly found in the 1920s and 1930s. They were founded by two former high-school football rivals Earl "Curly" Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun. They came up with name for the Green Bay Packers because the teams first uniforms were paid for by Lambeaus employer the Indian Packing company. Today the team is the oldest team in the NFL to still have its original name.

August 1920 was the year for the Packers to become a franchise is the then new pro football league. Even though there were money problems and the franchise was lost that year, Lambeau did not give up and he found new backers for the team. These new backers were called the Hungry Five and they became the Green Bay Football Corporation.

The Packers illustrious history includes twelve league championships. This is a record for being the most championships than any other team in the NFL. To their name they have nine NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl becoming into existence and three Super Bowl victories. Their Bowl wins were in 1967, 1968 and 1987. There is an intense rivalry with the Chicago Bears with whom they have played in over 170 games. They also have a rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have historically been the Packers playoff rivals, especially after the Packers beat Dallas in the famous Ice Bowl in 1967.

Green Bay is the only non-profit, community-owned Major league professional team of any sort in the USA. They can sport of a history of a 13 year non-losing streak that began in 1992. They have had 2 Super Bowl appearances during that streak with one win at Super Bowl XXXI. The Packers losing streak came to an end in 2005 and in 2006 they had a marginal season with an 8-8 record. In 2007 they ended up with a 13-3 season with Coach Mike McCarthy at their head.

In the 1960s the Packers won five league championships under Coach Vince Lombardi. This occurred over a seven-year span that led to winning the first two Super Bowls. Bart Starr is one of their most notable players, along with Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung, Carroll Dale, and Jerry Kramer. The 1967 season was the last one for Vince Lombardi as the Packers' head coach. The end of that season saw one of the most famous, if not the most famous, of all NFL Championship games. It is still known as the Ice Bowl now, 41 years later. And people still talk about it. With only sixteen seconds left in the game, Bart Starr ended the game with the Dallas Cowboys with a quarterback sneak touchdown that brought the Packers their third straight NFL Championship. This is a feat that has been matched to this day by no other NFL team. They beat the Cowboys 21-17 and made their place in history. The death of Lombardi in 1970 led to the naming of the Super Bowl trophy as the Vince Lombardi Trophy in recognition of the great accomplishments of Vince and his beloved team, The Packers.

One of the best moves that the Packers have ever done is to get quarterback Brett Favre from the Atlanta Falcons for the first round draft pick in 1992. The Packers then had a quarterback that never missed a game start until he left the team for the New York Jets in 2007. Will the Packers miss their beloved Favre? Only time will tell. But my bet is that the Jets will now have a comeback with Favre at their head the likes of which professional football has never seen. It will be fun to watch.

NFL Sunday Ticket Is the Only Answer for Diehard Fans. - Entertainment - Television

Baseball has long been called "America's pastime", but if television ratings are any indication, the NFL has unquestionably supplanted it in the hearts and souls of most Americans. Every year from September to February, millions of Americans plan their weeks, meals, and vacations around the NFL schedule in the hopes of not missing a single minute of the action. For many, watching football brings back memories of past glory on the high school football field and thoughts of what might have been. For others, it's the balance between power and grace that draws them in. For others, it is simply the enjoyment of watching unbelievable athletes doing unbelievable things that makes them shut out the outside world every Sunday afternoon.

The hard hits, breathtaking runs and spectacular catches that happen each week in the NFL are what have made football the most popular sport in America. Diehard fans across the country are united by their love of the game and the devotion to their team. Unfortunately, fans have long been at the mercy of the big television networks, because they can only watch the games that are broadcast in their areas. A Giants fan in California might miss his beloved G-men in action because the Chargers-Raiders game was on instead. Luckily, tragic events like this no longer have to happen.

For passionate fans living time-zones away from their teams or for the person who simply wants to watch as many NFL games as humanly possible, satellite television is a dream come true. Broadcast television, well on its way to extinction, is still at the whim of the networks, and simply can't deliver the football fix that most fans require. With the addition of ESPN and some other channels, cable is a big step up from broadcast, but still limits its customers, especially fans of smaller-market teams whose games aren't nationally televised every week. The only way to catch all the games each week (yes, every single one of them) is with satellite television.

Satellite TV is the only way to get NFL Sunday ticket, which is the premier TV package offered by the league. With it, you can see every single game each week, including non-nationally televised ones. This means that the Seahawks fan in New Orleans can watch his team every week, and Browns fans no longer have to wait until the highlights to cry, because they would have seen what happened to their team in real time. Just kidding about the Browns, but not about the options afforded you by NFL Sunday ticket. The only way it can get any better is with a DVR so you can record several games at once, or with an HD TV so you can see all the action in such startling clarity that you might think it's taking place right in your living room. So if you are sick of missing your favorite team's games because you live on the other coast, or your dream is to watch fifteen hours of football every Sunday, NFL Sunday ticket is the only way you can get what you want.

Friday night lights has spoiled me for all other shows - Entertainment - Television

Friday Night Lights is an American television series adapted by Peter Berg, Brian Grazer and David Nevins from a book and film of the same name. During the first three seasons, the series details events surrounding the Dillon Panthers, a high school football team based in fictional Dillon, Texas, with particular focus given to team coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his family. In the fourth season, Taylor becomes coach of the Lions at East Dillon High School, set in the poorer side of Dillon with a larger African American population. The show uses this small-town backdrop to address many issues facing contemporary Middle America, including school funding, racism, drugs, abortion, and lack of economic opportunities.

As a show about the community of Dillon, Texas and how the high school football team affects the town as a whole, Friday Night Lights has an ensemble cast. While screen time of characters varies from episode to episode, the show is most focused on Panthers' football coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler), who strives to balance his emphasis on family, his status in a sometimes confrontational community, and his personal ambitions. His family - wife Tami Taylor (Connie Britton), a guidance counselor turned principal at Dillon High, and teenage daughter Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden) - are also central to the show. When Tami becomes pregnant and gives birth to Gracie Taylor, tensions within the family increase and Julie becomes more rebellious.

Outside of the Taylor family, the show focuses on the respective lives of the Dillon's high school football players. In the series' first episode, star quarterback Jason Street (Scott Porter) suffers an injury that leads to an end to his football career and a disability that he resists and then learns to cope with throughout the series. Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly), who at the time of Jason's injury was his girlfriend, parallels his story, as she goes from a Panther cheerleader to a Christian youth leader.

As a result of Jason's injury, shy and nervous Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) becomes the Panthers' starting quarterback and eventually dates Julie. It is also revealed that Matt's father is serving in Iraq and that he must therefore care for his grandmother Lorraine Saracen (Louanne Stephens) by himself, with help only from his best friend Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons), and eventual live-in nurse and love interest Carlotta Alonso (Daniella Alonso). Brash star running back Brian "Smash" Williams's (Gaius Charles) quest for a college football scholarship and fullback Tim Riggins' (Taylor Kitsch) tale of on-and-off alcoholism and party-life are told as well. Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki) also stars as a town vixen who goes from Tim's occasional girlfriend to Landry's lover following Landry's defense of her from a rapist.

I just recently became addicted to Friday night lights, which has long haunted perhaps some metaphysical fantasy set in a desert island and about a certain style melodrama about the family of a man of the mafia. This show has no mob hits, not the sixties nostalgia on Madison Avenue, not housewives (or chemistry teachers) drug trafficking, no musical numbers, no hidden references to the Egyptian hieroglyphics or quantum physics. However, despite all these terrible failures, (Intelligent sarcasm) is a masterpiece. I'm not anti-Lost. I enjoyed the show immensely, with all faults. However, this show is somewhat higher. It is, in fact, a photo-realistic image of life in a small town in Texas, very well written and beautifully acted. The range with some other programs that are overlooked and sadly forgotten by all but some people with good taste: The Call to Glory, Homefront and I'll Fly Away, among others. Somehow, this is a show worthy of the golden age of television "sooial d rama" Naked City, The Defenders, Mr. Novak, Ben Casey, The Fugitive (a social commentary disguised as a thriller), Route 66, People Slattery and West Side East Side. Like the best episodes of the shows, Friday Night Lights offers more questions than answers. This show is one of the best ever. I pray sometimes enigmatic Providence not disappear from the airwaves.

TV Shows With the Best Soundtracks - Entertainment

The other day, our staff put together a list of the television shows with the best soundtracks. Now, it was certainly hard to omit the dun-dunn-dudun-dun-dun from the 400 episodes of Law and Order that air daily, and it was hard not to include the show Friends: some of us wanted it listed for no other reason that Ross's magical keyboard performances (Intergalactic Love Room, anyone?). But, when it came down to it, these series' just didn't fit the bill. The following five shows, however, are the ones we are not only happily watching, but also happily hearing.Grey's Anatomy: Is there anything this show doesn't have? Great writers, check. Great cast, check. Great story line, check. Great catch phrases, double check.....seriously. A show watched by seemingly everyone, Grey's Anatomy takes time to not only focus on the plot, but to focus on the songs playing in the background. This show never forgets about the McMusic. Grey's succeeds in matching up scenes with songs that make moments that much more memorable, and it also gives chances to a lot of undiscovered musicians. Known for featuring songs and artists that aren't yet famous, their soundtrack is a virtual "Who's Who" of performers no one knows. With music from Alamo Race Track, Adam Merrin, and Let's Go Sailing, this concept of untapped talent works wonderfully. Grey's is great at bringing fresh tunes to the operating table. Scrubs: It's silly, it's funny, it's downright ridiculous at times, but Scrubs, when it comes to the foundation, is all about heart: the music featured allows this to show. Whether viewers are learning through J.D.'s internal monologue or from a patient with an incurable disease, the music that is coupled with lessons of morality and mortality are always a perfect fit. When lyrics echo in the background of each scene, it's hard to think of a song that would be better suited.Like Grey's, this show is also well apt at including unique songs and staying away from the mains tream madness of other television shows. Recent music featured on Scrubs have included songs by The Mavericks, G Tom Mac, Rhett Miller, and the Cary Brothers. When it comes to this series, the music doctors are in. The Hills and Laguna Beach: So, these are technically two separate shows, but, because they really share similar casts, soundtracks, and "plots," they get placed under one entry: sorry Lauren and Kristin, you two are just going to have to learn to skip and hold hands. What these shows lack in, well just about everything, they make up in music. It should be no surprise that both these series, created by the folks at MTV, feature more song sequences than a record collection. But this abundance works well (and helps to keep the reality stars from "acting"). In fact, a ton of songs on my Ipod are songs I was introduced to through The Hills and Laguna Beach, and not songs that I was introduced to through Meet the Press and The O'reilly Factor like I keep telling everyon e. Recent artists featured on these shows include Avril Lavigne, The Weepies, and Katharine McPhee. With a good mix of songs by performers you know and performers you don't, MTV makes sure the hills (and the beaches) are alive with the sound of music. House: I know what you guys are thinking, "Could there be any more medical related shows on this list?" Sorry about that, but it's not our fault that the folks who put medical shows together are also great song picker-outers (if you want to go with the technical term). House is just another example of a show filled with the devastations of illness and death, but the sprinklings of humor and, say it with me, great music. The music picked for House does two things: it reminds people of the humanity involved in any medical setting, fictional or otherwise, and it makes Hugh Laurie's lead character seem a little less callous. The songs picked teeter between filling our hearts with hope and filling our eyes with tears.Recent music fea tured includes songs from KC and the Sunshine Band, Ben Harper, and Ella Fitzgerald. With an eclectic range of tunes and artists, this series makes sure that good music is in the, well, house (sorry, that tagline was begging to be used). Friday Night Lights: In a world where so much of the sports industry seems to be quickly becoming less and less about heart, it's nice to see a sports-themed TV show that is still beating. Friday Night Lights tells us the tale of a high school football team in Dillon, Texas. Not only does this show showcase the pressures placed on high school football players (particularly in Texas) but it also portrays the support offered by a small town who lives and dies with each first down.Omitting the hard, fist pumping songs of many sports-related features - Eye of the Tiger, mind you - the songs featured on Friday Night Lights are subtle, welcoming, and often instrumental. Still, when the moment calls for it, gears are switched over to songs that are lively enough to make anyone viewing get up to go running, or at least get up to get another beer.Explosions in the Sky, an Indie Rock group based in Texas, provides a lot of the music for the soundtrack Recent other artists featured include Ryan Adams, Pink, Outkast, and Pearl Jam. With a soundtrack like this, you'll never want the Friday night lights to go out (again, so sorry, it's almost over). There are a lot of TV shows that have great soundtracks, these are just our favorites. Each of these shows are enriched, and made more appealing and endearing, by the songs they feature, leaving us to vow to continue watching even if our television screens suddenly stop working.

How To Download The 5th Quarter Movie 2011

The 5th Quarter is a March 25th theatrical movie release, and a Festival Prize winner and the Boston Film Festival, that tells the remarkable true story of the Abbate family and the 2006 Wake Forest Demon Deacons football season.

Luke Abbate was nearing his 16th birthday when he and two friends were involved in a serious accident with an uninhibited driver. Luke suffered serious brain damage and died two days after the accident in February 2006. Realizing that Luke was gone, Steven (Aidan Quinn) and Maryanne (Andie McDowell) Abbate made the difficult decision to donate Lukes organs to five recipients, including a young mother suffering from heart disease.

Tremendous community support was shown the Abbate family in the aftermath of the accident. Older brother Jon (Ryan Merriman), a college football player for the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons, struggled to decide whether to return to play for his junior season in the fall of 2006.

After initially thinking he would not play, Jon was persuaded to play on in the spirit of his brother. His leadership and contributions were a major factor in the best record in the history of the Deacons program, 11-2 in 2006.

Another fascinating side note to that football season was the way in which Jon and the Wake Forest fans honored Lukes memory. Jon got permission to switch his jersey number to 5, in honor of Lukes high school football number. Early in the season, before the fourth quarter of each game, Luke and his parents would signal 5 fingers to each other. As the season went on, Jons teammates and fans caught on and The 5th Quarter became a major symbol of the 2006 football season at Wake Forest.

Unfortunately, The 5th Quarter movie struggles to live up to the remarkable nature of the real story of Luke Abbate and his familys spirit.

Despite a collection of solidly talented individual cast members, writer and director Rick Bieber has a hard time putting together a ninety minute depiction that gives audiences a genuine understanding of exactly how impacting Luke Abbates life was. His death led to directly to five lives being impacted through organ donation. The Wake Forest football team and its tens of thousands of community members credited much of the 2006 teams success to the inspiration of Luke and Jons leadership.

Aidan Quinn is a very talented actor who does a fairly decent job connecting to the mixed emotions of a father after his son dies. Andie McDowell is equally credible as the grieving mother. The 5th Quarter

Ryan Merriman is a somewhat accomplished actor with 21 films to his credits. He is a star on the ABC Familys hit series Pretty Little Liars. However, delving into the genuine feelings of how the real Jon Abbate must have felt in 2006 is a bit much to ask any young actor. Merriman gives a game effort, but many of his scenes immediately after the death are awkward at best. The 5th Quarter
