How to Choose the Right Soccer School - Education

Soccer schools are found all around the world with some being run by major international football clubs and others by local sports associations. These schools provide specialist training for children interested in football. Many of these schools charge for their services so how do you choose the right school for your child. In this article we will show you what to look for.

Brand & ReputationThis is particularly important with the smaller clubs and association. It's worth spending some time researching each club. You will want to find out how they are with children and youths and what style of teaching they use. Will your children be taught in a safe environment and how intensive is it. Some clubs will run high intensity courses which won't suit everyone.

The schools run by major football clubs often have excellent reputations as they are able to invest in proper facilities and professionally trained coaches. Schools run by clubs are often well structured and mirror the style of football used by the clubs first team.

Football School FacilitiesSome soccer schools offer extended training courses which means the participants will stay on site. These are often week long courses. It is important to ensure that your child will be staying and training in a safe environment. Bigger organisations will usually have better facilities. Despite this many of the larger schools have a more generic focus. You may find that some of the associations have specialist facilities for particular styles of footballers.

Scouting PotentialSome of the larger schools such as those run by major football clubs often invite scouts to sessions. This can be key to some participants as they are often looking to get picked up by a club. Smaller associations can't always guarantee the presence of scouts.

Types of CoursesGood soccer schools will put on a range of courses with varying time lengths. This is because they try to tailor their offerings to individuals rather than generalising. You will find that many schools offer team training, camps and day training sessions.

Extra BenefitsSome of the major football club run schools are able to offer extra benefits. This can include the chance to play in a major premier league stadium or meet a particular player. For some this opportunity can make a big difference and be the deciding factor.

These are some of the things to look for when choosing a soccer school. Soccer schools can be expensive so planning is essential. You should also consider how far you have to travel and what your child would want from the course. Are they looking to get into football as a career or want a way to spend a fun week away? Many of the big schools will run courses nationwide so it's well worth having a look online.

The most important thing is that your child has fun. Football is a game that can be enjoyed by anyone and most schools are open to all ages.

Toshacks Talents - The Future of Welsh Football - Sports - Football

Toshacks Talents - The Future of Welsh Football

Long starved of any relative success at International Football Welsh fans have not seen actions at major finals since a John Charles inspired Wales shocked many at the 1958 World cup. Play off heart break, missed penalties and contentious "hand ball" decisions later and the wait continues. However, after some more than creditable wins at under 21 level does the current crop of youngsters mean there is finally some signs of hope on the horizon? The Football Merchandise Store has a look at five great hopes of Welsh Football.

1) - Aaron RamseyAaron Ramsey is a midfield player who is also comfortable in a second striker role or operating on either flank. Having turned down a career in professional rugby union to join the Cardiff City academy, Aaron progressed quickly through the ranks to become Cardiff's youngest ever player at 16 years and 124 days, an FA Cup Final appearance later and Aaron was off to Arsenal where he has scored 3 goals in 27 appearances and is closely pressing Cesc Fabregas for a regular starting spot. Precocious skills, deft passing and an eye for goal have meant Aaron has stood out as a player of real international potential in his 11 welsh caps and is hotly tipped to be the nations finest player since Ryan Giggs.

2) - Gareth BaleDespite being born in the Welsh Capital, Gareth began his football schooling at Southampton where he was a youth team mate of Arsenal and England forward Theo Walcott. The Spurs player is at home in the left back or left wing positions and has performed with excellence in both roles in the Premier League netting some notable goals along the way, particularly the latter part of the 2009/10 season as he helped Spurs qualify for the Champions League. Internationally speaking Gareth is Wales' youngest ever international (16 years 315 days) also it's youngest ever goal scorer. In 2009 Gareth was rumoured to be subject to a 10million bid from Italian giants Juventus that was turned down. Pace, skill, crossing and a free kick specialist make Gareth a real player to watch for years to come.

3) - Wayne HennesseyBorn on the isle of Angelsey in North Wales, Wayne began life at Manchester City before transferring to Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign professional forms. When sent on loan for first team experience to Stockport County, Wayne made his professional debut and opened his account with six consecutive clean sheets, rightfully earning him the League Two player of the month award. The young stoppers debut for his parent club was very much a case of "into the fire" as he starred in a Championship play off Semi Final. Soon after he established himself as the Wolves number one and progressed quickly to become his country's top stopper. His performances in 24 caps earning comparisons to Welsh legend Neville Southall is due to his excellent shot stopping and his authoritative communication with his defence.

4) - Jack CollisonBorn in Watford, England; Jack qualifies for Wales through his Welsh grandfather who played International Rugby for Wales. Jack was recommended to the Wales coaching set up by his then Welsh West ham colleagues Craig Bellamy and Danny Gabbidon. At that time Jack was a reserve team player who slotted straight into a prosperous Wales under 21 team. Jack's career has progressed some what since then as he has made a permanent step up to Premiership (45 appearances, 5 goals) and International football (7 appearances). Jack prefers to use his mobility, vision and range of passing from a central position but his dominant left foot mean he is oft utilised on that wing.

5) - Adam MatthewsVery much a wild choice in this list as Adam is yet to play International football for Wales and is in just his first professional season with Cardiff City. Adam transferred from the Swansea City youth set up having previously been a prominent member of the Ospreys Rugby Union academy. The 18 year old right back shot to fame with a goal from his own half early in the 2009/10 and has featured 32 times in the first team. Adam's abilities on the pitch have led to highly flamed rumours that he is a target of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, he is also very firmly in the sights of Wales manager John Toshack having been included in the squad to face Scotland at just 17 years old.

The Evolving World of Football Tactics - Sports - Soccer

Football (aka soccer) is a game that's always in transition ever since it was invented and played in English schools in the late 1800's. Since then we have seen many different tactical formations rise and fall from popularity, such as the 'WM' formation, Alf Ramsey's 442, West Germany's 532 and Barcelona's 433.

At the moment the most popular formations in European club football (which is the most successful area of football currently) is the 451, which evolved from the 442 formation of the early 90's. Football journalist Jonathon Wilson has commented that he thinks that as time goes on the teams that do the best are the ones that defend the most rigidly (i.e. by sticking to their shape and working hard) but that also attack the most fluidly. Already, though, we're seeing a shift towards more fluid systems of play. Roma (the Italian football club) already play what resembles a 460 formation (with no strikers up front), giving them a fluid kind of football. In the 1970's Johann Cruyff's Ajax team played what was known as 'Total Football'; where players were essentially allowed to roam about the pitch and pop up wherever they liked. This resulted in a superbly beautiful form of football that would leave defences wondering what hit them. That Ajax team is one of the most successful o f all time, and although many have tried to copy the system used, it has never been successfully recreated.

The reason this kind of fluidity is rarely applied these days is because it requires an exceptional team of highly skilled individuals all working on the same wavelength - as one. Most teams aren't blessed with such players, so they must adopt a more practical approach. As players are become fitter and stronger, however, it does seem as though player roles are being blended, and we are now seeing players that can play in multiple positions (such as Dirk Kuyt at Liverpool FC).

2010 Connecticut Football Predictions - Sports - Football

Connecticut Huskies will be having high expectations from Jr. All-Big East RB Jordan Todman in 2010 especially with the departure of the second half of last seasons duel-threat RB Andre Dixon. Todman proved that he can carry the load as a leading RB last season and collected three 100-yard games in UConn's final four matches including amassing 162 yards against the Bearcats in Cincinnati. If the Huskies decide to focus their attention on a primary ball carrier in 2010 Jordan Todman should be more that capable to enter into what will be asked of him. With the recent transfer of DJ Shoemate from USC and the rules allowing him to play immediately, Todman may find some relief and once again become part of a two-man backfield that may be potent for Husky opponents.

Another gem that will be returning for the 2010 season will be previous Notre Dame transfer QB Zach Frazer. He started the 2009 season in mediocre fashion but after being sidelined by a shoulder injury he returned to some great performances and was a critical part of the Huskies four-game winning streak to finish the season. Frazer tossed seven TDs over his last five games with only two INTs and aired out a 333-yard game vs Rutgers.

Defensively the Huskies will once again be led by LB Lawrence Wilson who finished last season ranked in the FBS top-ten for total tackles averaging 10.77 per game. One main area of concern for the Huskies in 2010 must surely be the replacement of their secondary with leading DBs Robert McClain III and Robert Vaughn moving on. Both departed DBs combined for nine of the Huskies 12 INTs in 2009.

It won't take Connecticut too long into the season to see how they will perform as they start with an away match at the newly renovated Big House to take on the Michigan Wolverines on September 4th. The promising thing about the Huskies schedule is that they will face Big East rivals Pittsburgh Panthers, W. Virginia Mountaineers and Cincinnati Bearcats all in East Hartford this season.

It is conceivable that this UConn team could play the spoiler role and upset a Big East rival this season and it will be worth watching the college football odds in these conference rival games.

Huskies coach Randy Edsall has accomplished great milestones for UConn since the school joined the FBS and has produced tremendously disciplined teams in the past including last season's second ranked squad in both penalties per game and penalty yards per game. This will be Edsall's 12th season with the team and he carries a 57-41 record into 2010 in just seven seasons since moving up to Division I-A.

Other key returnees are OG Zach Hurd, OT Mike Ryan, WR Kashif Moore, DE Greg Lloyd. Look for the Huskies once again to be a disciplined squad that will build their offense around their running game and perhaps see the duel threat as we have over the many seasons with this team. With home games against conference rivals this season I believe the college football experts pick that they can post a better than eight-win total that they have in the previous two seasons.

It will be interesting to see what the oddsmakers set the over/under win total at for this team for the 2010 season, I will be watching the college football picks to see if they share my theory.

World Cup is catalyst to school sports equipment rush - Sports

With the World Cup in full swing, schools are coming under increasing pressure from parents and their children to provide top class sports equipment.

After England's lacklustre performance in South Africa, many critics pointed to our lack of investment in the sport at a grass-roots level. The growing consensus among professional scouts and managers is that there is simply not enough being done to encourage and develop the talent of England's youngsters. One fan commented, "Just look at the number of young foreign players being signed - it just goes to show we're not doing enough for our kids at home''.

It may well be this factor that has recently begun driving the sales of playground equipment. Football goals & nets, footballs, whistles, inflators and corner flags are all on the list for head teachers looking to jump on the parental-popularity.!|bandwagon and capitalize on what has already proved to be a highly lucrative month for World Cup sponsors in the business world.

However, the chance to kill two bird with one stone is an opportunity too good for some schools to pass up. World Cup fever is an excellent excuse to invest in sports equipment by health-conscious schools with bigger issues on their minds.Consider the fact that one in four children starting school is now considered overweight or obese. Hardly a desirable situation - or the talent pool we need to produce top class athletes With higher investment in playground equipment, schools would be much better placed to tackle the obesity epidemic, and the government is all too keen to see it happen, too. The 2006 target was to see all pupils engaged in at least two hours of physical education a week - but it's a target which is still not currently being met.

It doesn't stop with: the health benefits either. It's been argued that an increase in competitive sport in schools would help control children's aggression, improve both social and communication skills and encourage commitment and team spirit. One head teacher commented, "We can't guarantee to turn your child into the next David Beckham, but at least we can show them how important it is to stay active'' - and that's good for both children and the NHS's pocket.

Just as questions need to be raised over the future of English football, it must also be asked whether the surge of schools to the sports equipment store will really make a difference to our children's health. Is it, much like England's performance in south Africa, a case of too little too late? Perhaps. Of course, there is no magic bullet. But say what you like about football - whether you've loved the last month or loathed it - if it gets more children outside on the sports filed, then we should all be in favour of it.

2010 Mizzou Tigers College Football Preview - Sports - Football

The Mizzou Tigers won eight games last year in a season that had many ups and downs. 16 starters return from that group including Davey O'Brien watch list QB Blaine Gabbert. Nebraska is the clear cut favorite in the North division, but Missouri has enough talent to challenge for the title. Rumors swirled in the off-season that the Tigers might bolt for the Big Ten. Ultimately, they decided to stay and look to make the most of that decision. Odds currently sit at +300 for Missouri to win the Big 12 North division.

Mizzou was one of the first schools to install a true spread offense. QBs Brad Smith and Chase Daniel left as the top two passers in school history thanks to Gary Pinekl's system. Blaine Gabbert has a powerful arm that aired it out 445 times in 2009 for 3,593 yards and could be the most talented of the bunch. Derrick Washington is more than capable of carrying the load in the backfield. The Senior will try to regain his form from two years ago when he eclipsed the 1000 yard mark and scored 17 tds. The biggest question on offense is who will fill the void left at the receiver position. WR Danario Alexander (113 catches 14 scores) used up his eligibility after having a career year. Jared Perry graduated also taking away Gabbert's top two options from last season. Sophomore Jerrell Jackson will likely become the go to guy after a 37 catch Sophomore campaign. The Tigers have a stable of wide receivers that can be plugged in, but don't expect much production from the tight end position. The kicking game is solidified by Grant Ressel and his record breaking performance in 2009 (hit 26 of 27 field goals).

Mizzou's defense struggled against the pass last year giving up over 250 yards per game. The secondary is completely in tact led by FS Jasper Simons and should improve on those numbers. Aldon Smith is a Preseason All-American candidate who produced 11.5 sacks from his end position. It will be tough to replace three time 1st team All Big 12 linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and his 111 tackles. Defensive coordinator Dave Steckel will lean on the experience of Andrew Gachkar and Will Ebner while looking for production from Sophomore Zaviar Gooden. USC transfer Josh Tatum could also see considerable action if given the opportunity. If this side of the ball overachieves and matches the high octane offense, the Tigers will be a major contender in the North division.

The non-conference schedule is pretty light other than their annual Border War match-up with Illinois (5-0 all time against the Illini). They face Oklahoma and Nebraska back-to-back in late October in games that could be make or break. If they split these two, I see Mizzou winning 9 games and possibly sneaking by Nebraska for the Big 12 North Title.

2010 College Football Predictions - Oklahoma - Sports - Football

The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off a disappointing 8-5 campaign, but hopes are high that the program will return to an elite level in 2010. Head coach Bob Stoops' track record at Oklahoma certainly suggests the Sooners won't be down for long. In fact, Oklahoma is 117-29 in the 11 seasons Stoops has been at the helm. Injuries, specifically the one to quarterback Sam Bradford, played a big part in last year's disappointment. However, they also allowed some of the younger guys to gain valuable experience that will benefit the team in 2010. The experience quarterback Landry Jones gained last season is a big reason why Oklahoma is the favorite to win the Big 12 South. Jones played well in his stint as a starter, throwing for 3,198 yards and 26 touchdowns with 14 interceptions, and that leads me to believe he'll be even better this season.

Offense: Despite the injury to the Heisman Trophy winner Bradford, the Sooners were still able to average 31.1 points per game. With Jones entering the 2010 season confident after showing well as a rookie, I expect the offense to improve on last year's numbers. Jones will have no shortage of weapons with which to work. Joining him in the backfield is tailback DeMarco Murray. I consider him to be the best running back in the Big 12 because of his versatility. Murray has tallied 4,661 all-purpose yards and 45 scores through his first three seasons. Oklahoma's feature wideout is Ryan Broyles. He is coming off a mammoth season, during which he caught 89 balls for 1,120 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Defense: Oklahoma does loses some major pieces off a unit that was among the best in the nation a year ago, but there is plenty of reason to believe the Sooners won't miss a beat. The biggest reasons are defensive end Jeremy Beal and linebacker Travis Lewis. These two preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year candidates are two of the best in the league at their respective positions. Beal is an elite edge rusher, coming off an 11-sack season, and Lewis is a dynamic tackler, leading the Sooners in stops each of the past two seasons. With guys like tackle Adrian Taylor and end Frank Alexander joining these two in the front seven, the Sooners will stout where it matters most. All-Big 12-caliber free safety Quinton Carter and top returning interception man Jonathan Nelson lead the secondary.

Prediction: 1st Big 12 South - With Nebraska not on Oklahoma's regular season schedule, and with rival Texas losing irreplaceable weapons like Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley, the Sooners have an excellent opportunity to win the Big 12 South. Stoops has led Oklahoma to a school record 11 straight bowl games. No. 12 is a given this season, and it will likely be another of the BCS variety. College football odds makers have listed Oklahoma as the +225 favorite to win the Big 12 title. Be sure to check out my 2010 Big 12 football predictions to see how I have the rest of the league playing out.

Get More Information on New York Summer High Schools - Education

Getting an internship while in high school is not common practice, but it can pave the way for the student's future career. High school work experience in an area of career interest will provide the student with valuable skills and experience. Very few high school state champions or NCAA champions wrestle only during the regular scholastic season. Most elite wrestlers do not simply wrestle three or four months out of the year. Per iodization is simply the planning of your training for a specific period of time. Different types of Periodization exist including linear, undulating, concurrent, and conjugate. Periodization consists primarily of three phases: the preparatory, competitive, and transition phases.

Whether looking for a Christian academy, Jewish academy, private high schools or private elementary schools, taking a school tour is usually the first step in the application process. Tours, or open houses, are done differently in each school. Therefore, touring with a purpose is important in finding and getting into the private school of your choice. Touring a private school is much more than seeing if you get that "good" feeling about the place. Going on a tour is like looking for a job. You want a place where you can grow, be challenged and that will be fun. To do that you need to... rock your private school tours!

Free New York online high schools are becoming increasingly common. Less than three years ago, a student would have to look far and wide to find a program that was not either a commercial school or a university-based school. There are three basic kinds of free online high schools. They are: Charter schools, Department of Education-sponsored or school-district-sponsored schools, Corporate-sponsored, but state-approved schools. It's no surprise that New York high-school football is a dangerous sport. Permission for child to play means accepting the increased risk of torn ligaments, broken bones, and head injuries. College Sports Recruiting Opportunities Help Girls Through Bad Economy - Sports

When contemplating strategies for getting financial help with colleges in such a dire economy, getting recruited to play college sports should be at the top of any student-athlete's list. Given that premise, in the environment that men's college football recruiting has created, girls rule, and mens football recruiting may be the best thing that ever happened to womens college recruiting.

How does mens football recruiting fit into the equation? A disproportionately large number of mens scholarships go to football (up to 85 per school). To equalize sports opportunities across both genders, colleges support a broad range of womens sports via scholarships. In fact, female athletes who start planning very early in high school may even be able to pick up a sport they have never competed in before, and find great athletic scholarship opportunities through the college recruiting process. And for those who worry that athletics will take the focus off of academics, fear not, as female athletes have even higher college graduation rates than female college students who dont compet e (Division 1 -71% vs. 64%, and Division 2 -64% vs. 51%--compiled from NCAA sources).

By the time girls get to high school, most know if they're athletically inclined, and they have usually narrowed in on one or two sports of choice. But reality sometimes intervenes. A female student-athlete may have picked a sport that is highly competitive and she doesnt make the team. She may not like the coaching staff or they may not like her. She may have an injury that prevents her from pursuing her sport of choice. She may be interested in other things like student government or theatre, which conflict with the timing of the sport season. Or she may just get burned out or bored with her sport. What should a committed student-athlete do if she can't pursue her favorite sport?

There are all kinds of interesting sports opportunities available to girls who are willing to learn about them. Scholarships are offered for women in 24 sports in Division 1 and Division 2. If these sports are not offered at the high school level, there are probably club or recreational teams available somewhere nearby. It may be fairly easy to establish oneself as a player because many of these sports don't necessarily get the press that more high profile sports like women's basketball or volleyball get, so it may be more of a struggle for college programs to recruit players.

Here's what the landscape looks like. For girls, the sports that are offered at a large percentage of colleges and offer a fair number of scholarships per school are:

Basketball Volleyball Cross country/track and field Soccer Tennis Softball Golf Swimming/Diving

Here are some sports that arent available in as many schools, but have plenty of scholarships to give at the schools that have programs:

Field Hockey Gymnastics Lacrosse Rowing Equestrian Ice Hockey

And here's a fairly long list of sports that are offered in fewer schools and with less scholarships per school but they still have scholarships to give. Coaches in these programs may have a harder time filling these spots so they might offer great opportunities as well:

Bowling Fencing Skiing Synchronized swim Water Polo Archery Badminton Rugby Squash Team Handball

I am the mother of boys, not girls, but I know a good sale when I see one. Colleges are serving up a double whammy right nowvery difficult to get accepted, even more difficult to figure out how to pay for it. Participating in college athletics may make a student-athlete more attractive to an admissions committee, and may result in a scholarship that will cover a large part of the cost. If I was the mother of a female student-athlete and my daughter were even moderately inclined toward athletics, but hadn't settled on one sport yet, or was shut out from the sport she loved for some reason, I would encourage her to expand her athletic horizons a little.

So go ahead, girls -- pick up a hockey stick (field or ice, any kind will do), a bow and arrow, a fencing foil, a bowling ball, or another sporting implement you haven't experienced before. Do a little research to see what schools offer scholarship programs for women in these sports. If these schools match your general criteria for a good college fit, you should pursue them. A few years of training and the world is wide open to you, if youre a dedicated female athlete.

Rutgers 2010 College Football Predictions - Sports - Football

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights didn't quite live up to expectations in 2009 even though they won nine games. A 45-24 win over UCF in the St. Petersburg bowl supplied some needed momentum heading into this season. The Big East is up for grabs and if everything comes together the conference could be looking up at Rutgers at the end. Head coach Greg Schiano is widely respected throughout college football as one of the best teachers. This season will be one of his finest if he gets the players to buy in. The Scarlet Knights are +500 to take home the Big East crown. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 Big East college football predictions article.

Live odds are available all season long at Betfirms. Our top handicappers provide expert college football picks to help you build a bankroll and beat the books!

A balanced attack on offense was the name of the game for Rutgers a year ago as they broke in a true freshman quarterback. Tom Savage didn't disappoint, tossing 14 td passes against only seven interceptions while learning the ropes as a college QB. The highly touted recruit will be one of the most experienced at his position in the conference this season. Throwing for 294 yards in a bowl game will build confidence for the young star. WR/RB Brandon Sanu is one of the most versatile players in the Big East. He came to Rutgers as a wide receiver, but was used as a runner also last season which resulted in five touchdowns and almost six yards per carry. RB Joe Martinek led the team in rushing with 967 yards and had a team high nine touchdowns. Running the ball has been a Rutgers staple under Schiano as the school produced Baltimore Ravens star Ray Rice a few years ago. The Scarlet Knights will be working under two new offensive coordinators that have similar philosophies. This unit should eclipse the 326 yards average/game with the weapons that they possess.

Rutgers turned their opponent over at an alarming rate in 09' resulting in a +20 turnover differential. This number is remarkable and is the major reason for the nine win season they experienced. It will be difficult to even come close to this stat this year as only six starters return. The Scarlet Knights lost five of their top six tacklers in a group that included their best player CB Devin McCourty. There will be many new faces that Rutgers fans will have to get acclimated to. DE Jonathan Freeny is one of the top playmakers for the defense. His 9.5 sacks led the team by quite a bit. LB Antonio Lowery should see his tackle total increase after a 55 stop performance as a junior. DT Scott Vallone had a impressive freshman year with 7.5 tackles for loss. It will take a collective team effort for Rutgers to be considered one of the top defenses in the Big East.

Rutgers will face the 81st ranked schedule in 2010. They only host three conference games at Rutgers Stadium but do play three of their five non conference games at home (one neutral site). Hosting Uconn in the conference opener will be no easy task as Randy Edsall always has his players ready. Rutgers will try to make it three in a row at Pitt on October 23rd. A trip to West Virginia in the season finale could have conference title and bowl implications. I predict Rutgers will go 8-4 once again.

2010 Kansas College Football Predictions - Sports - Football

The Kansas Jayhawks were one of the most disappointing teams of the 2009 college football season after many preseason publications ranked them at the top of the Big 12 North. A change was needed after a 5-7 season included headlines of former head coach Mark Mangino physically and verbally abusing players. Turner Gill was brought in to restore a program that had seemingly turned the corner in past years. The job will not be an easy one, but Gill built Buffalo into one of the stronger mid-major programs and knows what it takes to produce a winner. KU is +500 to win the Big 12 North. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 Big 12 college football predictions article.

The majority of the offensive production from a year ago has moved on with their football careers. Todd Reesing had an incredible career at KU behind center, holding 30 school records before his senior season started. Things didn't exactly go according to plan in 09' even though his numbers were very good (3600 yards and 22 touchdowns). Kale Pick is the likely candidate to take over for Reesing. The sophomore signal caller was used mainly in running situations during the seven games he appeared in. His 55 yard run was the longest of the season for the Jayhawks. Alan Webb will challenge Pick in camp for the starting position. Both have upside and I wouldn't be surprised to see either start Sept 4th against North Dakota State. RB Toben Opurum was thrust into the spotlight as a true freshman due to an injury suffered by Jake Sharp. He managed to rush for 554 yards and nine touchdowns, but missed most of the final two games with injuries. Replacing WRs Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier is going to be nearly impossible. Meier was a converted quarterback that led the team in catches with an eye popping 102. Briscoe was the big play threat who collected over 1300 yards and had nine touchdown receptions. Johnathan Wilson is the most experienced of the group coming back with 35 catches a year ago. I expect Gill to run the ball much more often this season as KU has a pretty good offensive line and a quarterback/running back combo that can hurt defenses on the ground.

Defensively, this group was nearly non existent in the final three games last season which resulted in the Jayhawks losing their final seven games. Six starters return from last year's squad and new defensive coordinator Carl Torbush will implement and completely different scheme that players will have to adjust to. The strongest position on this side of the ball is undoubtedly linebacker. Freshman All-American Huldon Tharp was a pleasant surprise racking up 59 tackles in just seven games. Drew Dudley is the top tackler from a season ago as the senior collected 88 stops and three sacks. Corner Chris Harris anchors a secondary that gave up 245 yards passing/game. His 84 tackles were third on the team, which is a sign that offenses are breaking through the front seven easily. DE Jake Laptad provides the rush upfront, totaling a team high 6.5 sacks. He will be relied upon as the main pass rusher once again in 2010. The past two seasons, KU has come close to allowing almost 40 0 yards/game in the air it out Big 12. That number will have to drastically reduce if a winning season is in store for the Jayhawks.

Turner Gill has a great opportunity to start a winning foundation in year one with a generous schedule. Missing both Texas and Oklahoma in the Big 12 is surely avoiding two losses this season. Hosting Georgia Tech in the second game will be no walk in the park and fans should get a pretty good idea of how their defense will play this year. Only three games are truly on the road and two of those include Iowa State and Baylor. I don't expect the Jayhawks to challenge for a Big 12 North title this season, but I could see them pulling off a 6 win season.

2010 Georgia Tech College Football Preview - Sports - Football

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets won 11 games and reached the Orange Bowl in a season that was one of their most successful in school history. They received the automatic BCS bowl bid by defeating Clemson in the ACC title game. The Orange Bowl didn't go as planned losing by 10 in a game where their powerful rushing attack was completely shutdown by the Iowa defense. 14 starters return to defend the ACC crown and continue the winning tradition under head coach Paul Johnson. The Jackets are +900 to repeat as ACC champions. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 ACC college football predictions article.

The triple option attack is nearly extinct in college football these days, but Georgia Tech continues to run the offense built on timing and cut blocks up front. Nearly 300 yards per game were gained on the ground last season proving that the system clearly works if ran correctly. QB Josh Nesbitt is the classic option quarterback that relies on his feet to do most of the work with good enough passing skills to go over the top of defenses every now and then. He contributed over 2700 yards of total offense last year and scored 28 touchdowns. RB Jonathan Dwyer took his skills to the NFL after gaining 1400 yards as a sophomore. Anthony Allen averaged nearly 10 yards per carry in 09' and should split the majority of the carries with Roddy Jones. Both are talented running backs capable of putting up Dwyer like numbers. The biggest void to fill is going to be at the wide receiver position. Calvin Johnson dominated the ACC up until 2007 when blue chip Demaryius Thomas entered the picture. He broke the school record last season for yards/catch with over 25 and had 1154 yards in all. When Tech chose to pass, which wasn't often, the ball usually went in the direction of Thomas. Tyler Melton will likely get the first chance to prove he can be the #1 option, but Stephen Hill did produce as a true freshman and is a viable option also.

A complete overhaul was done on the defensive side of the ball. Al Groh was hired to run the defense after formally being the head coach at Virginia. A 3-4 technique will be applied to try and coral opposing rush offenses. Tech gave up over 150 yards/game on the ground, which is far too many if the 2010 squad wants to have success. Only one underclassmen is projected to start so this is an experienced unit. Eight starters do return, but they lost two heavy hitters in end Derrick Morgan (12.5 sacks) and safety Morgan Burnett (team high 4 interceptions). The secondary has six players who have started at least one game including third team ACC corner Jerrard Tarrant. Where the pass rush will come from is a concern as LB Steven Sylvester was second on the team in sacks last season with three. The top tackler from a year ago, LB Brad Jefferson, returns hoping to build on the 95 tackles he collected in 09'. I expect the defense to put up better numbers and show improvement as a whole.

Georgia Tech will be battle tested on the road after this season cumulates. Five of their six road games could possibly be against opponents ranked in the Top 25 at the time. They open ACC play with North Carolina on the road and have to travel to Blacksburg, VA to clash with preseason Coastal division favorite Virginia Tech on Nov 4th. Defending their home turf will be extremely important if Tech wants to have any shot at returning to the title game. Stealing a couple wins on the road will go along way also. I see the Ramblin' Wreck finishing with an 8-4 record.

Football Gambling - Ryan Prolonged by Jets - Sports

Sports gambling expectation is at a fever pitch for the prospects of the Jets and their online sports gambling odds to make the Super Bowl in February.

Head coach Rex Ryan is a huge cause for the online sports gambling optimism, and sports gambling handicappers are high on the New York Jets chances for 2010.

In his rookie year as a head coach a year ago, Ryan headed the New York Jets all the way to the AFC Championship game in spite of playing with a rookie quarterback and as a wild card squad on the road.

Ryan established an old school formula for results with the New York Jets a year ago iNFLuenced by a power running game and a brutal defense. The New York Jets brass has decided to extend Ryan with a deal that will take him through the 2014 year since they were so impressed with the results as well as the hype surrounding the squad.

General Manager Mike Tannenbaum was likewise rewarded with a new 5-year contract. Tannenbaum has served in numerous administrative positions such as assistant general manager and senior vice president of football operations in his tenure with the squad, which he has been with since 1997. He became the new general manager in 2006. At age 37, he's one of the youngest GMs in the football league gambling.

It is rare in the NFL for a coach to get an extension after only one year on the job but the football gambling results that Ryan produced as a rookie head coach are also rare. Woody Johnson, the Jets' owner, obviously wanted to keep the favorable vibes coming as training camp began.

"Our franchise is heading in the right direction and I believe that continuity is important," said Johnson. "Mike and Rex have demonstrated the passion, commitment, and expertise to get us to our ultimate goal: winning a Super Bowl." Ryan built his reputation in the NFL gambling as the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. Under his leadership from 1999-2008, Baltimore regularly had one of the top defenses in the league and he was the main factor in the Ravens 2000 Super Bowl winning year.

The New York Jets are a hot asset at the moment with the NFL preseason probabilities but will need greater performance from 2nd year quarterback Mark Sanchez, who struggled as a rookie.

"Do we expect to go to the Super Bowl? We better, absolutely," Sanchez said. "That's our goal." A related sentiment was gave voice to by cornerback Antonio Cromartie. "We feel this year is Super Bowl or best," Cromartie said.

The Ryan-Tannenbaum partnership is something of an odd couple production but is becoming one of the most effective in sports gambling.

"I have a great general manager that balances me out," said Ryan. "He has so much attention to detail. He's perfect, he's right there for me." Their first round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft also garnered the New York Jets a new cornerback. Kyle Wilson was picked 29th overall by the New York Jets and is viewed as one of the top cornerbacks offered this year in NFL picks. He was brought in to a 5 year, $13 million contract with the New York Jets.

2010 Vanderbilt Football Preview - Sports - Football

The Vanderbilt Commodores have been on a rollercoaster the past month. Coaches were preparing for camp leading up to the September 4th opener against Northwestern when head coach Bobby Johnson announced he was stepping down. School administration scrambled to find a replacement finally naming Robbie Caldwell the new head man. He inherits a team that won just two games in 2009 and brings back 11 starters. Vanderbilt is a long shot at +10000 to win the SEC East division. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 SEC football predictions article.

Vanderbilt's offense was nearly non existent at times last season, managing just 16 points/game and only 146 yards through the air per contest. Their running game was definitely the strength and sophomore RB Warren Norman is one of the more dynamic offensive players in the SEC. The speedy Norman was voted freshman player of the year in the SEC after breaking Herschel Walker's record for all purpose yards in a season with 1,941 yards. Granted, most of those yards were gained in kickoff returns as he collected 1050 yards and three touchdowns in that area. Who will be handing the ball off to Norman is uncertain. Larry Smith brings the most experience to the table, but was ineffective for the most part last year before suffering a season ending injury in the 9th game. His touchdown to interception ratio of almost 1:2 will not get it down at the Division 1 level. Redshirt Charlie Goro and junior college transfer Jordan Rodgers will press Smith for the starting position. Vanderb ilt's top three receivers return this season led by John Cole and his 36 catches. Brandon Barden is effective at tight end catching the ball over the middle. Udom Umoh should hit the two deep to round out the receiving core. The offensive line is going to have to be completely rebuilt after losing all five starters and could be noticeably weaker.

The defense returns five starters from a group that allowed over 23 points/game and gave up a lot real estate on the ground to the opposition. Quarterback play was down in the SEC a season ago and was the main reason why Vandy held opponents to just 165 yards passing/game. LB Chris Marve is the heart and soul of the defense. His 121 tackles led the team by a considerable amount and was good enough to earn 2nd team All SEC honors. Joining Marve at linebacker is John Stokes, who has seen quite a bit of game action. The defensive line must improve in 2010 if the Commodores plan on lowering the rush yards allowed. DT Adam Smotherman tore his ACL in spring practice and is hoping to return for SEC play. TJ Greenstone joins him at tackle as a returning starter also. 2nd team all conference CB Myron Lewis was a 3rd round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Bucs. Casey Hayward will take over as the top corner and hook up with other team's top receivers. He had a team high 8.5 tackles for l oss as a sophomore. Special teams should be a strength with K Ryan Fowler returning (hit 16 of 21 fgs) and Warren Norman returning kicks once again.

Vandy opens with back-to-back home games vs. Northwestern and conference foe LSU. They will have two SEC games under their belt by the middle of September. The majority of their games will be on home turf, even if it is in a stadium that holds under 40,000. Rivalry games await in the middle of November with games against Kentucky and Tennessee. This is going to be a rebuilding year and I would be shocked if they win more than four games. I predict yet another 2-10 finish

2010 Southern Miss Football Predictions - Sports - Football

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles ended the 2009 season much like 2008 finished, but this time they were on the losing end of the New Orleans Bowl. Larry Fedora enters his third season as the head man for the Golden Eagles and believes this will be his top team yet. The Golden Eagles return 12 starters and get QB Austin Davis back from an injury. This team should contend for a Conference USA crown with the amount of talent they possess. Southern Miss is listed as a +5000 long shot to win the BCS crown. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 Conference USA football predictions article.

The offense averaged over 400 yards/game for the second consecutive year under offensive coordinator Darrell Wyatt (now at Kansas). Martevious Young proved he is a capable backup by throwing for 1861 yards and 16 touchdowns in the final eight games. He also finished third on the team in rushing. There is no doubt that Austin Davis is going to be the starter in the opener at South Carolina. His freshman season was one of the best in Southern Miss school history and he was on his way to an even better sophomore campaign before the foot injury. Davis was completing an astonishing 70% of his passes. DeAndre Brown shocked schools two years ago when he chose Southern Miss over the whose who of college football. He has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but still managed to catch 47 balls for nearly 800 yards and nine scores. The amount of attention he will draw from defenses should open things up for players like Quentin Pierce and company. RB Damion Fletcher had be en in the Golden Eagles backfield for the past four years and finally used up his eligibility. His 78 yards in the bowl game gave him 1,000 yards for the 4th straight season. Tory Harrison has to be replaced also after leading the team in rushing touchdowns with 10. There are a young group of guys ready to make a name for themselves with the opportunity at running back.

Southern Miss's defense should show improvement in 2010 with nine returning starters. They feature one of the top linebacker units in Conference USA and the front seven as a whole is very strong. Todd Bradford's bunch had their issues a season ago, mainly defending the pass. Teams passed for an average of 262 yards/game and completed over 60% of their passes. The Golden Eagles were able to dial up the pressure against the opposition, collecting 34 sacks as a team. LB Korey Williams was a 2nd team all conference selection as a sophomore after collecting 121 tackles and a team high 7.5 sacks. He is the center piece of a talented trio of linebackers that is rounded out by Ronnie Thornton and Martez Smith. These three were the top tacklers on the team a year ago and should retain their spots again. The rush defense was actually fairly decent, allowing 3.6 yards/carry. DT Anthony Gray is a major reason for this as the senior to be plays the run extremely well. DE Cordarro Law t ied for the team lead in sacks a year ago in his second year at Southern Miss and earned honorable mention all conference accolades. The secondary was a weakness last year, but should improve behind Alabama transfer Alonzo Lawrence.

Live odds are available all season long at Locksmith Sports Picks. Our top handicappers provide expert college football picks to help you build a bankroll and beat the books!

UCF is likely to challenge Southern Miss for the East division title in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles have to make the travel to Florida and take on the Golden Knights November 13th. A road trip to South Carolina will test this group immediately in the opener. Southern Miss is just 2-11 in road openers. Kansas rolls into town on September 17th completing the home/away series these two schools agreed upon. I really like Davis at quarterback and think the defense can make the necessary changes to show improvement. I expect at least 8 wins for Southern Miss.

2010 Fresno State Football Predictions - Sports - Football

The Fresno State Bulldogs have built a solid football program behind the direction of head coach Pat Hill. The man with the mustache will enter his 14th season at the helm and features yet another strong team. Things will have to be done a little differently in 2010 with the departure of RB Ryan Mathews. There are 15 returning starters from last season's team that should give contend in the WAC conference. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 WAC college football predictions article.

The Bulldogs used a balanced attack on offense in 2009 as they averaged 229 yards on the ground and another 202 through the air. Everything literally ran through Mathews at running back. His 1808 yards and 19 touchdowns were both school records. An amazing 11 games with at least 100 yards tied a WAC conference record held by the great LaDainian Tomlinson. QB Ryan Colburn had a very productive season also. He passed for 2459 yards and 19 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. Passing opportunities might be a little tougher to come by with defenses not having to worry about Mathews. Sophomore Robbie Rouse gained valuable experience in the Louisiana Tech game when he got the first start of his career. The coaching staff is very high on this kid and he should at least double the 479 yards gained last year. Colburn's favorite target was Seyi Ajirotutu, who led the team with 49 catches and seven touchdowns. Jamel Hamler had a nice sophomore season with 37 catches and over 500 yards. This is an inexperienced bunch other than Hamler and could possibly start talented true freshman Josh Harper. The offensive line returns nearly the entire two deep and feature 4th team All American G Andrew Jackson. A dominating performance was put on by this group last season and I expect much of the same in 2010.

Live odds are available all season long at Locksmith Sports Picks. Our top handicappers provide expert college football picks to help you build a bankroll and beat the books!

Opposing offenses had a lot of fun playing the Fresno State defense last season. A whopping 414 yards/game was given up. They were -10 in turnover differential and recorded a measly 11 sacks as a team. Defensive coordinator Randy Stewart would rather forget his first year with the Bulldogs. Seven starters return however giving Stewart a chance to work with a majority of the players for a second year in a row. Two 1st team all WAC players are present on this side of the ball. Linebacker Ben Jacobs anchors the middle of the defense and recorded 106 tackles as a junior. What little pass rush there is from this defense comes from defensive end Chris Carter. His five sacks led the team as the next closest recorded just two. Lorne Bell was a 2nd team all conference performer and finished with 65 stops. The secondary intercepted only seven passes, which played a large role in why their turnover differential was so bad. I look for marked improvement from the defense this season.

A home opener against defending Big East champ Cincinnati will test the Bulldogs immediately. Fresno State is 10-1 in home openers. WAC play will open the following week with a road game at Utah State. The schedule is actually home heavy with 7 of their 12 games in Fresno, CA. Their conference fate will like be decided between November 13th and 20th. They host Nevada on the 13th and travel to Boise State on the 19th. I believe the Bulldogs will win 9 games.

Satellite Television Knows How to Do College Football - Entertainment - Television

As school starts back up, you can be certain of one thing: College football is on its way in and the summer sports drought is on its way out. This is cause for great celebration for many Americans. Financially speaking, professional football is the biggest American sport. However, college football creates the wildest fans and attracts wide national attention for six months out of the year. College football is perhaps not as big of a business as the NFL, but that does not mean that it is any less important to the American psyche. In many ways, the rabid sports fans that follow college football far surpass those of the NFL. This means that there are millions of Americans that are hungry for a way to catch as many college football games as possible all season long. Satellite television offers them a chance to watch all the games they want. It also gives them an improved game time experience with the addition of more channels in high definition and DVR capability for all their games.

Go with Virginia Tech Hokies If You Bet On NCAA Football - Sports

Virginia Tech is an appealing squad in 2010 for those that like to wager college football. The Virginia Tech Hokies begin the year with a high profile game against Boise State and if they can win that competition they could jump right into the national championship picture early in the year. Virginia Tech is 18-1 in NCAA wagering to win the national championship.

For those that bet college football, the numbers post Virginia Tech as an underdog in their year starter against Boise State. The Hokies are minor underdogs against the Broncos but the Virginia Tech Hokies have the skill to win that game. Virginia Tech returns quarterback Tyrod Taylor and running back Ryan Williams. The Virginia Tech Hokies furthermore have a strong defense that will be able to hold back most competitors.

Beginning with the starter against Boise State, Virginia Tech has some difficult competitions on their schedule. For the Hokies, that game is the most difficult out of conference matchup. They will furthermore take on difficult ACC competitions against North Carolina and Miami and both of those competitions are on the road and the negative part for the Virginia Tech Hokies is that they're in consecutive weeks. It is going to be very difficult to win two straight weeks on the road at North Carolina and Miami, even if the Virginia Tech Hokies start the year with an upset over Boise State and run the table into November. And at that point it's achievable that Virginia Tech will be unbeaten. If they beat Boise State they should have no trouble the next two weeks against James Madison and East Carolina. They proceed to Boston College for their conference starter nevertheless they can win that game. They can also win at NC State. The Virginia Tech Hokies get Georgia Tech at home , and home games against Central Michigan, Wake Forest and Duke will be wins. The competitions that seem to be road blocks to a perfect year are the competitions on November 13th at North Carolina and on November 20th at Miami. The Virginia Tech Hokies wrap up the regular season against Virginia.

Virginia Tech should have a potent offense this year and if the defense comes together they could be a very excellent squad. The secondary is packed with skill led by Rashad Carmichael, though they do have to replace 3 starters on the defensive line.

Frank Beamer, the current Virginia Tech Hokies head coach, has been with the squad since 1986. He was replacing Bill Dooley, who had been with the squad for 9 seasons that were regarded as the most successful in school history. At the time he was not a big name, so his hiring was criticized. Beamer has unquestionably proven worth the risk that the Virginia Tech Hokies took in hiring him since that time, nevertheless. He took over a squad that had only been to bowl competitions six times in the last century. The Virginia Tech Hokies have made 17 consecutive bowl appearances and Beamer has a record of 8-9 for those bowl games in his 22 years of coaching the team. He furthermore is even as the second-winningest active coach.

NCAA College Football: History of the Miami Hurricanes - Sports - Soccer

The University of Miami Football team is recognized as one of the top programs in the nation. This is for good reason as well. The Hurricanes have a history of success. They have won 5 National Titles over the years and have shown that they can field a solid team year in and year out.

Over the history of the University they have managed to win 64 percent of their games. The record for the school over the years has been 552-307-19. They have an interesting history of fielding some of the most talented players in the nation at a very high rate. This may not show in the relatively low total of 5 National Championships, but it does show in the incredibly high total of 35 Consensus All-Americans.

The team is specifically recognized for its incredible athleticism. Florida is known for being one of the best areas to recruit in the Nation. This has contributed to the success of the Hurricanes, Gators and Seminoles over the years. The Hurricanes have an incredibly athletic team each year. This has not always contributed to high totals of wins, but it always has made them an exciting team to watch.

The Hurricanes are spirited rivals with the Florida State Seminoles. These two teams have had countless battles over the years that have come down to the wire. When we say that these battles have come down to the wire we mean that they have been decided on a final field goal attempt repeatedly. While these kickers may kick at a high percentage each year, it seems that these top kickers have never been able to punch in the field goal to win the game. This trend has taken place numerous times over the last two decades.

The first championship came in 1983. The team was led by Howard Schnellenberger. The team was led by Bernie Kosar all the way to the Orange Bowl where they would face off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The team managed to jump ahead to a 17-0 lead and managed to hold off the Cornhuskers in order to record their first ever National Championship.

The next championship would come under the command of Jimmy Johnson. Many people know Johnson for his success with the Cowboys, but it all began with Miami. The team had players such as Michael Irvin and Steve Walsh. The team went undefeated that season and managed to take out the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl.

The team continued success under Dennis Ericksen. Ericksen managed to lead the team to 2 National Championships in 3 years. They won their first under his reign in a Sugar Bowl victory to cap off a season of 11-1. This Championship came in 1989. The next one was the 2nd undefeated season for the Hurricanes in a 5 year span as they won in the Orange Bowl to seal a 12-0 season.

The team continued to compete, but they were not able to take home another championship until Larry Coker came. Coker led the team to a Rose Bowl victory in 2001 to cap off yet another 12-0 season for the Hurricanes.

Toledo Football Predictions 2010 - Sports - Football

Things seem to be heading in the right direction for the Toledo Rockets under the direction of 2nd year head coach Tim Beckman. The school made headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past years, but the focus has finally returned back to the football field. Beckman led the team to a 5-7 record in his first season after accepting the position following a brief stint as defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. His Rockets are a dark horse candidate to win the West division. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 MAC football predictions article.

The Toledo offense had success moving the ball with offensive coordinator Matt Campbell's scheme. They had some injury issues at quarterback last year, but showed that there is depth at this position and the future is sophomore QB Austin Dantin. Dantin replaced three year starter Aaron Opelt five games into the 2009 season (torn rotator cuff) and did an admirable job as a true freshman. He threw for 447 yards the final two weeks showing the coaching staff he is ready to take the reigns for good in 2010. RB Morgan Williams burst onto the scene in 2008 as a true freshman and set a freshman school record for rushing yards with 1,010. Last season, he missed the first two games due to suspension and DaJuane Collins was the featured back. Williams has showcased his talent in the past (330 yards in one game!) and will return as the full time starter this year. Beckman's most productive player in his first recruiting class had to be WR Eric Page. He led the team in receptions, td catches and yards while earning 1st team all-conference accolades. Page actually finished with better numbers than the school's career leading receiver Stephen Williams and will top his overall stats if his production stays consistent. The Rockets return three of their top four receivers from a year ago. The offensive line loses just one starter and features NFL prospect LT Mike VanDerMeulen. There are 100 career starts up front making this unit one of the most experienced in the MAC.

Live odds are available all season long at Locksmith Sports Picks. Our top handicappers provide expert college football picks to help you build a bankroll and beat the books!

Much of the off-season had to be spent figuring out a way to slow down opposing offenses. The defense was erratic in 2009, allowing 37.7 points/game and 407 yards of total offense/game. Six starters return on this side of the ball and there seems to be enough talent to turn the corner this year. The defensive line might be the weak link, however, as they lack depth and are undersized. Beckman added two junior college transfers to the group that could pay immediate dividends. Toledo lost their best linebacker in Barry Church. He had been a fixture in the middle of the defense for the past four seasons and earned all-conference honors each year. Archie Donald returns and led the team in tackles with 116. Without the services of Church, Donald will be asked to step up his game even more and be the leader of the 2010 defense. The secondary brings back three starters including two sophomores that saw significant action as freshmen. FS Jermaine Robinson made 58 stops last year, but could be more of a ball hawk as he did not intercept one pass from his safety position. Daxton Swanson broke up a team high seven passes in 09' and is one of the top young corners in the MAC. Replacing K Alex Steigerwald will be a priority on special teams as he hit 12-16 field goal attempts and missed just one extra point.

Toledo will get three cracks at tacking down a BCS power conference team in their non-conference schedule. Arizona makes the trip east in the opener to clash with the Rockets, while road games at Purdue and Boise State will test this team. MAC play opens earlier than most conferences and Toledo will have two conference games under their belt before the end of September. Key West division games at Northern Illinois and at Western Michigan could decide how the season plays out. I predict a 6-6 finish for the Rockets.

Arkansas State Football Preview 2010 - Sports - Football

Head coach Steve Roberts enters his 9th season at Arkansas State feeling the pressure of producing a winning team in 2010. The Red Wolves finished a disappointing 4-8 last year and return 11 starters from that team. Expectations have lessened and Roberts usually turns out his best teams when they fly under the radar. View the full conference breakdown in our 2010 Sun Belt football predictions article.

The Red Wolves offense struggled with consistency last year even though they returned a four year starter at quarterback. Corey Leonard left as the school's all time leader in total offense, but was benched twice in 2009 and ended his career by tearing an ACL. The decision was made midway through the season to give redshirt freshman Ryan Aplin an opportunity to showcase his skills. Aplin finished the year with a 65% completion rate and threw for 889 yards. He finished second on the team in rushing, but watched spring practice after recovering from shoulder surgery. That injury could cost him the starting job this year as Phillip Butterfield was impressive in Aplin's absence. Arkansas State will make the change to a no huddle offense in 2010. Reggie Arnold led the team in rushing with 723 yards and 12 touchdowns but will not return. Derek Lawson played behind Arnold a year ago and should get an opportunity to be the full time back. He rushed for 244 yards and two scores in 09'. The receiving core might have the biggest question marks on offense. Only sophomore Taylor Stockemer saw considerable action last year and was a downfield threat averaging over 21 yards per reception. Allen Muse and Kedric Murry combined for 13 catches and should play a much larger in the passing game. The offensive line returns all five starters and will be one of the top units in the Sun Belt. Being in much better shape was an off-season priority for the line with the new fast paced offense.

Live odds are available all season long at Betfirms. Our top handicappers provide expert college football picks to help you build a bankroll and beat the books!

The defense was not the problem last year as they were above average against both the run and the pass. They still managed to give up over 23 points/game, which had much to do with being -5 in turnover differential. The defensive line played strong versus the run, allowing 122 yards/game. This year they must replace three key starters and their star up front in Alex Carrington. Carrington was a 1st team all-conference selection and 3rd round draft pick by the Buffalo Bills. DT Bryan Hall has been a two year starter and recorded a team high 6.5 tackles for loss. He will need to increase his performance even more this season if the Red Wolves want to dominate the line of scrimmage. LB Demario Davis led the team in tackles as a sophomore with 80 stops. Javon McKinnon will run alongside Davis at the outside linebacker position and brings experience to the defense. He finished fourth on the team in tackles with 53. The secondary returns both safeties, but will have to find two new starters at corner. FS MD Jennings is the key player and was a 1st team all-conference member as a junior. His 64 tackles ranked second on the Red Wolves. Their pass defense could slip if they have issues with the new players at corner.

Three of Arkansas State's four non conference games are against BCS power conference teams. They almost defeated Iowa last year before ultimately losing by a field goal. A road trip to Auburn, AL opens things up on Sept. 4th. Their schedule is different in that they will play three conference games before the 1st of October. A key home game that has to be circled is their Nov. 2nd match-up with preseason conference favorite Middle Tennessee State. I think this team shows some improvement, but not enough for bowl eligibility and finishes with 5 wins.
