Brian Westbrook 2002 Draft Day Picks

Brian Westbrook was born on September 2, 1979 in Fort Washington, Maryland. Although Westbrook is not the most skilled, biggest, or athletic player he has always used his drive and determination to make his way to the top of any level that he has ever competed at. For this reason, he is known as one of the most complete and versatile players in the entire football world. This is saying a lot when you take all of the great players into consideration.

Westbrook played high school football at DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland. Year in and year out DeMatha is a powerhouse in high school football and this held true during Westbrooks time at the school. Although he did not get a lot of attention from college recruiters, he did do enough to get a few looks from the next level.

After high school Westbrook took his game to Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although he had to fight through several injuries while in college, he still managed to become one of the best players that this level has ever seen. He still holds the NCAA record for all purpose yards with 9,512. On top of all those yards Westbrook also scored 84 touchdowns during his time at Villanova. He finished off his college career by winning the Walton Payton Award which is given annually to the best player in NCAA Division I-AA.

Although Westbrook had a great college career NFL teams were hesitant to pick him in the 2002 NFL Draft due to his small size (58), injuries, and small college experience. But the Philadelphia Eagles decided to take a chance in the third round, and this ended up being a very good decision. In 2004 he finally got a chance to start a few games, and he did a great job by rushing for more than 800 yards. He followed this up with back to back seasons of 1,000 total yards or more in 2005 and 2006.

College Sports Recruiting Opportunities Help Girls Through Bad Economy - Sports

When contemplating strategies for getting financial help with colleges in such a dire economy, getting recruited to play college sports should be at the top of any student-athlete's list. Given that premise, in the environment that men's college football recruiting has created, girls rule, and mens football recruiting may be the best thing that ever happened to womens college recruiting.

How does mens football recruiting fit into the equation? A disproportionately large number of mens scholarships go to football (up to 85 per school). To equalize sports opportunities across both genders, colleges support a broad range of womens sports via scholarships. In fact, female athletes who start planning very early in high school may even be able to pick up a sport they have never competed in before, and find great athletic scholarship opportunities through the college recruiting process. And for those who worry that athletics will take the focus off of academics, fear not, as female athletes have even higher college graduation rates than female college students who dont compet e (Division 1 -71% vs. 64%, and Division 2 -64% vs. 51%--compiled from NCAA sources).

By the time girls get to high school, most know if they're athletically inclined, and they have usually narrowed in on one or two sports of choice. But reality sometimes intervenes. A female student-athlete may have picked a sport that is highly competitive and she doesnt make the team. She may not like the coaching staff or they may not like her. She may have an injury that prevents her from pursuing her sport of choice. She may be interested in other things like student government or theatre, which conflict with the timing of the sport season. Or she may just get burned out or bored with her sport. What should a committed student-athlete do if she can't pursue her favorite sport?

There are all kinds of interesting sports opportunities available to girls who are willing to learn about them. Scholarships are offered for women in 24 sports in Division 1 and Division 2. If these sports are not offered at the high school level, there are probably club or recreational teams available somewhere nearby. It may be fairly easy to establish oneself as a player because many of these sports don't necessarily get the press that more high profile sports like women's basketball or volleyball get, so it may be more of a struggle for college programs to recruit players.

Here's what the landscape looks like. For girls, the sports that are offered at a large percentage of colleges and offer a fair number of scholarships per school are:

Basketball Volleyball Cross country/track and field Soccer Tennis Softball Golf Swimming/Diving

Here are some sports that arent available in as many schools, but have plenty of scholarships to give at the schools that have programs:

Field Hockey Gymnastics Lacrosse Rowing Equestrian Ice Hockey

And here's a fairly long list of sports that are offered in fewer schools and with less scholarships per school but they still have scholarships to give. Coaches in these programs may have a harder time filling these spots so they might offer great opportunities as well:

Bowling Fencing Skiing Synchronized swim Water Polo Archery Badminton Rugby Squash Team Handball

I am the mother of boys, not girls, but I know a good sale when I see one. Colleges are serving up a double whammy right nowvery difficult to get accepted, even more difficult to figure out how to pay for it. Participating in college athletics may make a student-athlete more attractive to an admissions committee, and may result in a scholarship that will cover a large part of the cost. If I was the mother of a female student-athlete and my daughter were even moderately inclined toward athletics, but hadn't settled on one sport yet, or was shut out from the sport she loved for some reason, I would encourage her to expand her athletic horizons a little.

So go ahead, girls -- pick up a hockey stick (field or ice, any kind will do), a bow and arrow, a fencing foil, a bowling ball, or another sporting implement you haven't experienced before. Do a little research to see what schools offer scholarship programs for women in these sports. If these schools match your general criteria for a good college fit, you should pursue them. A few years of training and the world is wide open to you, if youre a dedicated female athlete.

Top 3 Pac-10 Teams for the 2009 College Football Season - Sports

The USC Trojans have been an unstoppable force in the Pac-10 so far but this year may be a different ball game after all. This is a team that has been a stockpile for talent for quite some time now but now that some of the best ones have left for NFL, the team faces a shortage in talent. Filling the gaps left by start quarterback Mark Sanchez and lineback Rey Maualuga will be a tough job indeed for coach Pete Carroll. Sure USC has been a gold mine for talents but not even they are perhaps equipped to fill gaps so very big.

This means that USC just might lose the Pac-10 title to someone else this year. After seven straight wins, it remains to be seen whether they make it to the eight Pac-10 win in a row. Let's look at them and the other two of the top 3 Pac-10 teams.

USC Trojans - The superstar Quarterback Mark Sanchez decided to leave for NFL just when he was beginning to open up. Smart move on his part but it has left coach Carroll with the huge task of finding and preparing his successor. Aaron Corp and Mitch Mustain are currently vying for the position right now. While Mustain has a great high school record, Corp seems to be having a better chance right now. Whatever Corp has in his favor (for no one is quite sure), one thing's for certain - he will be working with the best offensive line in the country at the moment. So the Trojans still remain the favorite for the Pac-10 this year. They do lose a lot of power in the defense but at least Taylor Mays returns as the safety.

Oregon Ducks - The Ducks had slow start last year where they almost lost to Purdue. Then they bounced back by the end of the season when they had an impressive wins over Oregon State in the Holiday Bowl and the Civil War. The real thing that real thing that remains to be seen however is whether they are able to sustain that force this season. Their quarterback Jeremiah Masoli certainly had a lot to do creating this force and we are all eager to see how the Ducks perform in their first game under their new coach Chip Kelly. Ducks have a good runner in tailback LeGarrette Blount and have good speed where it counts the most. All in all, they will make USC fight for it for sure.

Cal Bears - This team has been receiving mixed opinions mostly. While some are looking at the returning talents and the 2008 defense as a potential Pac-10 title contender, others are still looking for the offense line. Sure the Bears have tailback Jahvid Best but there's still no quarterback who can mount a powerful attack. The Bears have been winning their recent games though but anything spectacular remains to be seen from the team.

College Football Scholarships - Start the Search Now! - Sports

The hunt for college football scholarships really picks up come September. College football coaches may begin calling you once per week if you are a Senior and may being sending your recruiting materials if you are a Junior starting September 1st. You on the other hand may call coaches as much as you want.

Many of you will begin to receive letters and phone calls from coaches starting next month. Does this mean you are being recruited for a college football scholarship? Yes and No. The mailing of letters and initial phone calls is just the start to a long exhaustive recruiting season by football coaches. Colleges will mail our thousands of letters and questionnaires to players of every caliber. We have heard of players receiving dozens of letters, but not so much as a phone call after that.

Coaches and especially the Graduate Assistant coaches (each team has two) as tasked with calling up to 100 to 200 players a day. From the coaches perspective they want to start with as large of a recruiting base as possible by contacting literally thousands of players. If you make the inital screening you will be asked to send in a tape for review. Rest assured, all tapes are screened. Coaches can make a decision to see more, pass on you, or place you in a potential pile within minutes.

We have a detailed strategy in our book how to deal with these letters and phone calls to help navigate the recruiting game. It can be hard to tell who is actually interested in you and who is merely making contact to build a base. During the month of August you should be making your initial recruiting list of 50 to 100 schools that match your academic and athletic profile. Begin making contact with coaches in September and mailing out your recruiting packets. The real rush of college football recruiting starts in late October. It is best to make contact early to beat out the thousands of other high school players who want the same college football scholarship.

Increase Your Football Performance Right before the Season Begins - Health - Supplements and Vitamins

Summer is starting to fade. The days are growing shorter, and soon many people will be heading back to school. Even before schools begin, fall camps will open for all those who are playing high school and college football. Just like the change in the air, you can sense that the time for football has come once again. Most football players have been trying to improve themselves all summer. They have been in the weight room religiously trying to add lean muscle to their frame. They have been running every day to help their cardiovascular system to process all of their excess fats and carbohydrates. Most have even stuck to a specific nutritional dietary plan tailor made for their bodies specific needs in order to get the most out of their body's performance. Yet, people are always looking for a way to get an edge over the competition. There is a great and easy way to give you an edge on the field.

Increase your endurance. With a little over a month until the season begins there is still a chance for you to make the changes to help you outlast your opponent on the football field. Endurance is important for every sport, but especially for football. Football is a game of wills and in the fourth quarter after your body has taken a beating the entire game victory depends on how your body is able to handle the rigors of the game. Everything you do in the off season is simply there to help you to be at your best in the fourth quarter of a football game. So what should you add to get more out of your body? Eat more fat.

Yes, certain types of fats have been linked to increased endurance in sports. Researchers have discovered that there are many different types of fats. Some you want to avoid, but others in moderation have wonderful and helpful abilities in the human body. Omega-3 fatty acids are the types of fats that you want to have in your daily diet. Research has indicated that athletes that train with Omega-3 fatty acids take more oxygen into their blood stream, and have stronger hearts compared to athletes that don't have Omega-3 fatty acids in their diet. This increase of oxygenated blood and heart strength has been shown to improve the endurance of the athletes in sports competition. In addition Omega-3 fatty acids help in combating cholesterol and heart disease later in life, meaning that it really is essential to the health and happiness of everyone

The interesting thing about the Omega-3 fatty acids is it is one of the few things that the human body cannot make by itself. Omega-3 fatty acids can only be taken into the human system through digestion. The best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids come from fish and organ meats. Both are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, but both are difficult to add to supplement a diet. Plus, to get the full benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids it take weeks of constant consumption because it takes weeks for the body's muscles fibers to absorb the Omega-3 fatty acid. The best way to have a constant supply of Omega-3 fatty acids in your body is to take a dietary supplement that contains fish oil. Fish oil supplements give a high dosage of concentrated Omega-3 fatty acids, are easier to manage, and more economical to buy.

A football player that is looking to compete should be looking for any competitive edge that they could have on the field. With the time remaining until the start of football season, adding Omega-3 fatty acids to a healthy diet will help anyone out perform their opponent on the field.

Eanes Independent School District: Excellence in Education - Education - Online Education

Located in the picturesque Texas Hill Country in metropolitan Austin, Texas, the Eanes Independent School District (ISD) is widely recognized as a leader in educational excellence in the region. Comprised of six elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school, the district has achieved the Exemplary rating, the highest rating in the state of Texas, for each of its schools for the years 2008 and 2009. Students score well above the national average in standardized tests, and parent involvement is exceptionally high in the Eanes ISD.

Incorporating portions of the cities of Rollingwood, West Lake Hills, and Austin, the Eanes ISD is regarded as one of the most desirable school districts in Texas due to the quality of its teaching staff, curricula, and facilities. Real estate values are higher than average, but the excellence of the school system eliminates the expense of private school tuition, making the Eanes ISD more affordable for many families. Austin has long been considered one of the best places to live and work in the United States. Its employment outlook is bright, especially in the electronic and software fields. A thoroughly modern city, Austin attracts the best and brightest. Eanes ISD reflects this in its innovative and award-winning schools.

Westlake High School, in particular, has received many awards for academic performance. Its advanced placement program in physics was named the Best in the World by the College Board in 2005, and Westlake's AP Physics scores consistently are among the highest in the nation. Of its approximately 2,400 students, about ninety-five percent continue their education in a college setting. While academics are the emphasis for the Eanes ISD, a wide variety of extracurricular activities are available to Westlake students. The school newspaper, the Featherduster, has achieved national ranking for its quality. A wide array of creative arts courses and clubs are available to students. The sports programs at Westlake offer the chance to compete athletically at the state level; Westlake's football program consistently wins district awards and has competed for the state championship title on a number of occasions.

This record of success is possible due to the educational foundation built in the elementary and middle schools. Both the Hill Country Middle School and the West Ridge Middle School have received the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award, as have three of the six elementary schools in the Eanes ISD. These results are achieved, in part, through a consistent effort on the part of school administrators to keep parents informed and involved in their child's progress. Parents can choose to access their student's attendance records, class schedules, and grades through a district-run website, Skyward Upward Access, designed to allow parents to track progress on a daily basis. The individual schools in the Eanes ISD also have their own websites, allowing parents to access lunch schedules and menus and other helpful information.

No discussion of the Eanes ISD would be complete without mentioning the teaching staff. Experience and education make the difference in the Eanes ISD; about a third of the teachers in the district have earned their master's degree, and over half have at least ten years of teaching experience under their belt. Experienced teachers, state-of-the-art facilities, and school administrators dedicated to providing children the best possible education make Eanes ISD a world class school district.

Do Something New With School Fundraisers - Business - Fundraising

School fundraisers are used for a wide range of activities, from buying new football pads for the high school team to sending the band on an out-of-town excursion for a competition. Many well known fundraising activities are as traditional as dances and locking freshmen in their lockers.

Does tradition mean that we have to stick with the same school fundraisers no matter what? Can't we look for something a little more lucrative? After all, most schools have to work within a very tight budget, and many school fundraisers still require a sizable investment to get things started.

Some of the most traditional fundraisers seem to come around every year. Schools will send kids out with chocolates, magazines, and coupon books to peddle to their family and friends. In some cases they even go door to door. The major problem with these endeavors is the fact that they still require an upfront investment but cannot guarantee a good return.

Sometimes a small group within the school will use an activity like a carwash fundraiser to put together the funds for special occasions or equipment. This happens whenever a school can't quite afford the necessary items. But, just like the other example, it requires some investment without a promise of a return.

When the student body is excited about participating in activities like this, you can generate a lot of money. For example, the football team will probably work a lot harder on the carwash when they know it's their own equipment on the line. But the real question is: should you work harder, or just smarter?

Working smarter means that you will never restrict yourself to the basic activities when there is so much more you can do. Go ahead with the carwash, but include a concession stand with it. You can make more money by offering treats and drinks to your customers while they wait for the kids to finish the car.

Raffles are another classic fundraiser, but you don't have to settle for selling plain old tickets. Try selling lollipops with the raffle number written on the stick. This way, even if a customer isn't interested in participating in the raffle, they still might be willing to chip in for a simple gift.

There are many ways to improve school fundraisers. Always try to think of ways to make it easy for someone to give you money, and always deliver the goods as promised. Take the necessary time to prepare you activities and follow through with them and you'll always find success.

The Love of Football - Sports - Football

In the United States, sports figures hold a degree of celebrity that approaches movie stars. In some cases, it eclipses it almost completely. There was a time when Michael Jordan was the most recognizable man in the country. And in the world of American sports, football has become the most popular of them all.

There are those who say that car racing is bigger, but what you see just doesn't seem to back it up. If you compare football on all levels with any other sport anywhere in the country there is just no way that more people spend anywhere near as much time watching and cheering and buying licensed goop from anything else. If NASCAR was so big, then why do you still see 10 times as many window stickers, antenna windsocks, t-shirts, coats, hats and everything else you can imagine with NFL logos on them. There are a few race car numbers around, but not as many as you would think if it really is the biggest spectator sport.

When you combine high school, peewee, college and pro football in all league, you end up with millions of people watching football 4 or five days every week for half of the weeks out of the year. If racing or basketball were more popular wouldn't the NBA finals or the Indy 500 be the most watched television events of the year? They aren't, not by a long shot. No TV program on the face of the planet even comes close to matching the Super Bowl.

Part of the reason football is so huge has to do with the way the game is played. Of all the major sports it is the most violent. It's more like gladiatorial combat than anything else out there. You might call upon boxing or cage matches or even wrestling (gag me), but people don't really want to see folks try to actually kill each other. In football you aren't really trying to harm your opponent, just knock them down as hard as you can. The difference is subtle, but remains nevertheless.

Football is harsh but relatively safe. Most of the injuries are not caused directly by the seemingly bone-crushing contact, but rather from freakish incidentals. A guy running full speed catches a toe in the turf and tears a rare ligature in the leg. Another fellow pulls a muscle. About the only injury directly associated with the brute force in the game is the odd head injury. And it normally happens when the helmet comes into accidental contact with a knee or something bizarre.

Football is also a game of rules and coordination. Even to the untrained eye, the complexity of a single play is one of the things people love. An elite basketball player can absolutely dominate a game - thereby rendering the whole thing as boring as watching paint dry. One dude waxing the floor with all the other dudes, yawn. But even the most dominating player in the game can only do so much by himself against 11 other highly muscled and determined guys.

Those are just a few of the reasons that football has become a sort of religion in certain parts of the country, and only slightly less than that in all the other bits. You might not be one of the followers, but you probably still watch the Super Bowl - even if just for the commercials.

Houston Cougars College Football Tickets And Seating Chart - Sports

Head Coach Kevin Sumlin was pretty much all smiles at the last press conference the Houston Cougars held. He spoke very highly about the team and their ability to show off some of their stuff in recent wins as well as the anticipation of taking on Southern Miss this coming weekend. There's some history there with wins and losses that defied some logic but all of that is behind the Cougars now as they look forward to what lies ahead. The Cougars started the season out quite well with a win in their opening game against Northwestern State 55-7. Oklahoma State met the same fate and was defeated by the Cougars 45-35 and a third game in a row, the Cougars beat Texas Tech at home 29-28.

With just one loss on the books, which was a close game against UTEP who defeated the Cougars 58-41, the Cougars resumed their winning streak by beating Mississippi State 31-24, Tulane 44-16 and SMU 38-15. Fans are anxiously awaiting the rest of the 2009 season to witness games being played as only the Cougars can. The Southern Miss game on October 31 may be the most anticipated game of the year. Next the Cougars will take on Tulsa on November 7 followed by UCF on November 14, Memphis on November 21, Rice on November 28 and Conference USA Championship on December 5.

The cumulative statistics for the Cougars are looking great so far this season. The team has been scoring an average of 40.4 points per game as contrasted to opponents at 26.1. The Cougars are trailing opponents with rushing attempts at 221-282 but total passing yardage for the Cougars is 2822 with opponents at just 1553. With the proper focus in areas that need improvement, the Cougars can take to the field with more confidence in every game.

Robertson Stadium borders Cullen Boulevard on the east, Wheeler Street on the south, Scott Street on the west and Holman Street on the north. This fantastic stadium has been attracting crowds for home games of the Cougars for years and there is no disparity in fan appreciation to date. If it's your first time to Robertson Stadium, make sure you take note of special gate designations. Gate 2 is for UH player guests, Gate 3 is for high school coaches recruits, Gate 9 is for UH will call, Gate 10 is for UH students and Gate 12 is for visiting team player guests.

There are 14 gates total providing easy access to Robertson Stadium without delay. So whether you wish to be seated for upcoming games in the Westside suites or Eastside suites or to saddle up next to Cougar Pride seating, there are many different options to choose from. Those who choose reserved seating can take advantage of various locations around the stadium, including right near the video scoreboard. If you want to be near the action of cheering students, make sure to elect to be near sections 217, 218, 219 on the suite level or sections 114, 115, 117, 118 and 119 nearby.

An auxiliary scoreboard is on the Holman Street side for those who want the reserved seating options in sections 127 through 133. Sections 227 through 234 are general admission seats and serve as an excellent location to catch some great sites of the Cougars in motion. Eastside boxes and Westside boxes offer reprieve from the Texas heat and amenities not available with general admission seating. All in all, the only way you'll miss out on getting the seats of choice is if you put it off until the last minute.

10-Step Guide:Organizing Your School For A Terrorist Attack - Health

It was the first day of school in a NYC school. Parents anxiously anticipated their child's new year, new grade, and new abilities as they dropped them off at the classroom door, or hovered awkwardly in the class wondering how to say goodbye. Suddenly a mother's cell phone rang. Her face turned pale. "

Oh my God," she said. "A plane hit the World Trade Center." Gasps. Confusion. Another cell phone rang. Tears. Soon parents were huddled around a small radio in the conference room not knowing what to say or do. They could only wait.

New York City and Washington DC schools face serious and complex issues. In some schools, parents are missing. Students witnessed traumatic violence from classroom windows. Students everywhere have seen the attacks on TV. Whether the disaster struck on a personal or communal note school every school community faces the challenge of how to integrate this unprecedented event into everyday learning.

Right now the most important thing is to allow the tears. Cry, cry and cry some more. Provide love, comfort, and support. Mobilize your community to help everyone. Feel with your hearts and reach out with open arms. These are the dark days of unthinkable destruction.

Before your tears even dry you must then utilize unflappable courage to re-establish the normal routines and structures of the school environment. Then, as time goes on, a teacher may discover a student who has become obsessed with drawing burning towers. Some students may have trouble concentrating, or finishing assignments.

Some teachers may find themselves easily fatigued and less energetic. Parents might be have increasing complaints about child safety, or may find it harder to trust the teachers in the classroom. Some will have lost their jobs. If appropriate care-taking networks exist within the community these problems can be addressed in a healing manner.

The only way to recover your school from the ravages of the terrorist attack on the United States is to create a compassionate community within the school environment. The following is a ten-step guide for how to establish a community care-taking network in your school.

Know Your Community.

Every school is collection of subcultures, especially among the student body. The terrorist trauma will have affected every school differently, and it will have affected the school's various subcultures differently.

As soon as the head of the school re-establishes normal school routines he or she should initiate a Focus group. Include teachers, administrators, mental health staff, medical personnel, parents, custodial staff (They are often very informed about students' secret lives) and even some adolescent age students from different cliques (if applicable).

Include personnel from every grade in the school. Use this meeting to check in. Find out what people have noticed and observed. Discuss the characteristics of all the community members and think about how each has reacted to past difficult moments. Identify which strategies have worked and which have failed. Pay attention to specific students who may have specialized needs.

Create A Statement.

When this focus meeting (or meetings) is completed turn your findings into a position paper. Summarize who you are as a school and state your philosophic values. In the context of those values list discuss your sense of what the long-term issues might be and make sure you include reference to ongoing current events.

Identify the strategies you will use to address anticipated problems. For example your statement might include something like this: "In the past we have found that our fourth graders may become overly consumed with violent video games when exposed to stressful circumstances. We ask all parents to limit but not prohibit video game playing to 1/2 an hour per day.

Ask your child what feels good about the games and then try to substitute other activities like sports. In this instance a rough game of soccer or football is a more integrated and healthier expression of aggression than repeated exposure to violent imagery. Physical activity helps to release tension rather than video games that induce more tension and create an increased need for the game.

In the classroom we will be talking about violent imagery and the school psychologist will do a presentation to the fourth grade classrooms." Remember this is an example. You have to look to your own school for the types of things you anticipate.

Set Up Adult-only Opportunities To Study The Impact Of Terrorism On Communities.

Do not arrange process groups or discussion forums. People will be more responsive to organized and bounded opportunities for the exploration for what has happened in their lives. Invite college professors or parents who are terror experts.

Show movies that deal with similar events. Have the principal speak on school safety or a parent discuss the impact of terrorism on local businesses - this way everybody is gently informed about what different members of the community are experiencing.

During these meetings give people to discuss their responses and don't cut anybody off. Let the discussion take its own direction. If people feel ready to express themselves, they will. Let it happen. Make sure you have one of your mental health personnel present but don't make them too obvious. Allow them to be a relaxed presence in the room who may or may not gently facilitate.

Establish Informal Opportunities For Gathering.

Initiate a Friday coffee hour when teachers and other staff have breaks. Ask a parent to set up a grade-wide phone tree. Ask the PTA or Parents Association to arrange fun get-togethers for the parents, and to keep track on how individual families are doing. Again, enable and support spontaneous discussions. You provide the structure. Allow the relationships to grow on their own.

Support Local Civic Organizations.

Nurture the community organizations that have in the past or may in the future be responsible for protecting your school. Take out ads to complement rescue workers, fire fighters and police. Celebrate their work.

Model What Happens In The Adult Community In The Child Community.

Don't make students process events before they are ready. Arrange for firefighters to visit the classes. Ask parents to give presentations about how their professional lives have been affected by the terrorism. Provide informal opportunities for gathering like apple picking events, team sports, and school dances.

What To Say To Children.

Listen to the children. For children five and under, teachers should respond only to verbalized material. Teachers should repeat what they are in a positive and engaged manner. Answer questions honestly and simply. Engage the child's intellect. Use words that indicate that this was an unusual event. Make sure no preschool child mistakenly thinks that they did something wrong.

For younger elementary age children it is useful to work on projects that demonstrate the triumph of good over evil. Take supplies to a firehouse. Send letters to the president. Become pen pals with children in NYC schools, or if in New York, become pen pals with children outside of New York.

Children ten and older and ready to embark on more philosophical journeys. Set up debating teams and discussion groups. Depending on individual children and classes introduce complicated topics like US Foreign Policy. Do not pretend that the United States as infallible. Do describe terrorist responses as unconscionable. Make sure kids see that the things that are wrong with the US are not really what prompted the terrorist attack.

Hang On Tight.

Understand that any child, anywhere, will be affected by what has happened. The terror attack will have affected students at Stuyvesant High School in New York City (located a few blocks north of ground zero) differently than students in Anchorage Alaska or Rome, Italy - but they will be affected.

It will change their perspective on how they view safety, boundaries and relationships. Expect behavioral changes in all children. Anticipate students who are already vulnerable. Grab them before they fall further. Don't let go. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers are excellent resources for the child and for you. Tough love also works.

True interest and faith in a student, however, are the unprecedented acts that can save a student's life. Educators and support staffs are the most important people in a child's external world. Even if other people take your work for granted don't you dare. All school personnel should remind themselves everyday that they are the most important people in the world.

Find A Collective Project To Work On Together.

Build a memorial garden in a nearby park. Create a sculpture. Plant a tree. Involve everybody - students, teachers, parents, administrators, support and custodial staff, and professionals affiliated with the school.

Empower All Members Of The Community By Nurturing Existing Relationships.

People overcome attacks and trauma by re-experiencing their efficacy in the world. Make sure everybody has a role to play in rebuilding the school community.

Football Season Is Almost Here - Who's your Favorite? - Sports - Football

I have been a fan of football as far back as I can remember, from before I started actually playing the game at the age of eight. It has always been enjoyable for me both to play and to watch, although now that I am over 40 I do mostly watching. Okay, I only watch!

If you are a fan of college football you had to enjoy last season no matter which team was your favorite, the season played out right for a change with the top teams and as it turns out, and the top players battling each other. I don't think I will ever forget the final seconds of the National Championship game with Vince Young of the undefeated Texas Longhorns almost single-handedly beating USC. Vince Young is probably one of the greatest players to ever play the game as far as just pure raw talent goes. I can't wait to see him this season as he plays for the Tennessee Titans.

Another young Quarterback I watched last year was actually I high school senior by the name of Tim Tebow, who was named 2005 quarterback of the year. I watched his state championship game where in one play he ran right up the middle of the field for 70 yards and carried a guy for the last ten on his back! He was recruited by the Florida Gators and in the spring game he actually through for more yards and had a higher passing completion percentage than the starter, Chris Leak. This will be an interesting situation to watch as well.

Will Big Ben be back at full ability after his near death experience motor cycle accident? I guess we will have to watch and see. One thing is for sure this season looks to be a promising one for excitement with one of the best drafts in years as far as talent is concerned. I can't wait to see how it all plays out. Will Reggie Bush be able to show us something from New Orleans? How will Matt Leinart do in Arizona? Will Vernon Davis help to turn the 49ers around?

There will be so many exciting players to watch it will be hard to choose which game I follow. One thing is for certain though when the Tennessee Titans and the Atlanta Falcons Play I want to see that. Those teams have advantages over every other team for practicing against Vince Young and Michael Vick in being able to practice with the real thing. It will be an interesting match up to say the least.

If baseball is America's favorite pastime, football is our present. The sport is the most widely played in high schools throughout the country, and the Superbowl is often most watched TV program of the year. But do you know the rules of the game? The field is broken into downs (or yards), marked by large white lines. At each end of the field is an end zone. The two teams of no more than 11 players each try to run the ball from the centerline to the opponent's end zone for points, or to pass the ball to a player already in the end zone. These touchdowns are worth 6 points. After a touchdown has been made, the team can choose to try for an additional point with a field goal. Field goal: placing the ball at the end zone line closest to the center, a player kicks the ball between the goal posts for 1 point. More rarely a team will try to get 2 additional points with the risky two-point conversion, in which players try to run the ball to the end zone from the 2- (NFL) or 3- (col lege) yard line. If a touchdown has already been scored, the team has an option to try for a close-range field goal to gain an additional point. College and professional football games have one hour of game play. High school games are a bit shorter, with the quarters being cut from 15 to 12 minutes. But, as there are so many time outs, games often last much longer. "Times" can be called by the ref whenever a play is incomplete or out-of-bounds, and each team is given 3 time outs to use throughout the game at their discretion. There is a built-in break for halftime. While most sports switch sides at halftime, football switches after the first and third quarters. Get the best football awards, from trophies to medals and even personalized plaques for you team this season!

Football Legend Dies from Mesothelioma - Health - Cancer

Merlin Olsen, a Hall of Fame defensive lineman also known for his acting and broadcasting career, died at age 69 of mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of lung cancer.

Olsen was a member of the "Fearsome Foursome" of the Los Angeles Rams, and was selected to 14 consecutive Pro Bowls, a tie with Bruce Matthews for the longest streak in league history. Olsen was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982.

Towards the end of his football career, Olsen became involved in television, acting on the television shows "Little House on the Prairie" and "Father Murphy" and acting as a spokesman for FTD Group Inc.'s flower commercials. He was an avid commentator for college football - Olsen was the voice of college football's Rose Bowl from 1980 until 1988.

Olsen was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2009, and was undergoing chemotherapy at the time of his death. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos that attacks the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen. Although rare, mesothelioma patients often have a grim prognosis.

Mesothelioma can take upwards of 30 to 40 years to manifest, which makes it difficult to ascertain when the initial exposure occur. The World Health Organization has identified asbestos as a dangerous carcinogen, in which there are no safe levels of exposure. Although activists and organizations such as Ban Asbestos are currently seeking a worldwide ban of asbestos in all capacities, asbestos is still used in construction in developing countries and may be found in quantities of less than 1 percent in certain products sold in the United States.

Olsen filed a mesothelioma lawsuit claiming he was exposed to asbestos at age 10 or 11 when he worked after school and during the summer holidays doing manual labor. He also stated he may have been exposed while working in the construction industry while in high school and college. Olsen's lawsuit states the manufacturers didn't warn workers about the potentially dangerous side effects of breathing asbestos fibers.

Due to the hazardous nature of the fibrous substance, a licensed contractor is required by law in the United States to remove asbestos. The often time-consuming process is necessary to prevent civilians from exposure. Because asbestos was a common construction fiber, many older buildings may be contaminated, unbeknownst to its occupants.

Olsen's fame has brought the threat of mesothelioma into the media spotlight, as many individuals may be unknowingly exposed. Individuals should contact their local health department if they suspect an asbestos contamination and should not try to remove it themselves.

Invite the Football Team to Choose Commercial Furniture! - Other

Theoretically, commercial furniture should stand up to use by a football team! Realizing that this is stereotypical, just imagine three linebackers sitting on your living room sofa. That would be well over 600 pounds. Would your sofa survive even a brief period of time? Commercial grade furniture would survive and last for years beyond the football team test!

Commercial grade furniture has longevity as its mission. Whether it will be used by a football team or a group of junior high school students in the cafeteria, it is intended to be in place and in good condition for years of use. Imagine hundreds of high school students during their lunch hour. If the cafeteria does not have restaurant commercial furniture, the upended and/or shared chairs, use of the table for seating and numerous other combinations of use, will destroy it. The commercial restaurant grade furniture accounts for unusual use by factoring in unusual situations such as the use of table for seating, several occupants of a single chair, tipped over beverages, and food left behind when lunch is completed.

One sign of modern commercial furniture is softer lines in the design. Tables and desks may have rounded corners while chair backs also are rounded rather than "laddered." Contemporary commercial furniture takes this a step further and incorporates contemporary patterns, finishes, and designs into the furniture.

Commercial lobby furniture is important to businesses where clients may have long waits. When the business is formal, it is important to purchase commercial lobby furniture that "speaks" the seriousness and formality of the business without going overboard. In lobbies such as hospitals, clinics, auto repair shops and others, the commercial lobby furniture purchased will be designed to be comfortable as well as functional. These lobbies generally are used by a wide range and age of individuals and the commercial lobby furniture must be durable and made of sustainable and easy to care for materials.

Commercial grade furniture supplier can be found everywhere. The important factor is the credibility of such suppliers. In order to purchase quality commercial furniture one must do a bit of homework: speak with other people who have purchased commercial furniture. From whom did they purchase the furniture? Is the company committed to high grade, sustainable furniture production? Is there a guarantee/warrantee covering mechanical and/or structural defects? Once you have spoken with several commercial furniture suppliers, you are ready to order your furniture.
